9th October 2021 – Hazells v Houghton Regis – Home – Friendly – Lost 103 – 50

This afternoons game with Houghton Regis is always one of those games that many of us look forward to and today was another of those enjoyable games, despite the end result. Unfortunately Houghton could only field 12 players and as we had 15 we played 3 rinks and a triple against their 4 triples. Kishore Seegoolam, Carol Crick, Steve McNeill & Ian Ramsay were involved in a great game and the scores were level at 15-15 after 14 ends however they then dropped 6 shots from the next 2 ends and couldn’t recover from the final 2 ends, losing out 21-17. George Murdoch, Matthew Crick, Inger McNeill & Josh Henly had a tough afternoon and despite picking up a 5 on the 8th end this only brought the score back to 11-8 down and they only picked up 3 more shots in the game which they lost 24-12.Karen Seegoolam, Judy Rogers, Naomi Hooper & Roger Crick were leading 7-5 after 7 ends however the wheels then fell off as they dropped a 6 & 5 in consecutive ends and only won 2 more ends in the match, finishing on the wrong side of a 30-11 scoreline. Dave Wheeler, Ellen Livett & Paul Rogers were also level at 7-7 after 6 ends however they too struggled in the later part of the game and only won 3 more ends in a 28-10 defeat

3rd October 2021 – Hazells v Buckingham West End – Home – Friendly – Won 108 - 63

This afternoon we welcomed Buckingham West End and were looking to avenge the narrow 4 shot defeat we suffered in the away game a few weeks ago. Steph Rose, Anne Farmer & Steve McNeill got us off to a great start as the only lost 6 ends during their game and they won 19-8. Liz Goodchild, Ellen Livett & Inger McNeill picked up a 5 on the 5th end to take a 7-2 lead and from there they never lost the lead and went on to win 16-10. Maureen Warwick, Karen Seegoolam & Roger Crick took an 11-3 lead after 9 ends, at which point Matthew Crick took Rogers place and they continued to control the game and went on to win 17-9. Gill Errington, Norman Bonham & Ian Ramsay dominated their game throughout and they only lost 5 ends during their 18-7 win. Kishore Seegoolam, Ann Ramsay & Carol Crick equaled the highest winning rink score in a game where they picked up a 6 on their way to a 22-11 win. Margaret Oliffe, Steve Goodchild & Rod Bacon went behind early in their game however they kept battling away and by the 12th end they were just 3 shots behind. By the time they went in to the last end they were 18-9 down however they then picked up a 7 to lose by just 2 shots, 18-16.

26th September 2021 – Hazells v Tring – Away – Friendly – Lost 88 - 86

This afternoon we travelled to Tring with 5 triples and looking to get back to winning ways. This was to be a close game once again however we were to end up losing by 2 shots, despite winning on 3 of the 5 rinks. Maureen Warwick, Anne Farmer & Inger McNeill found conditions tricky this afternoon and only managed to win 6 ends, 1 of which saw them pick up a 5 however they ended up losing 28-11. Marion Garrett, Ellen Livett & Judy Rogers got off to a good start and were 8-4 up after 8 ends however they then dropped 14 shots over the next 5 ends and went on to lose 21-12. Liz Goodchild, Ann Ramsay & Steve McNeill also got off to a great start going 10-1 up after 5 ends however they then lost the next 8 ends in a row to go 13-10 behind. They then picked up a 5 and went on to win 18-16. Norman Bonham, Andrew MacKenzie & Joan Sweetman picked up highest winning rink of the afternoon courtesy of their 25-10 win, during which they only lost 5 ends. Norman Garrett, Steve Goodchild & Paul Rogers were involved in a great game and after 15 ends the scores were level at 13-13 however we then managed to win the last 3 ends to earn a 20-13 win.

25th September 2021 – Hazells v Long Crendon – Friendly – Home – Lost 96 - 83

This afternoon we welcomed Long Crendon and were looking to get back to winning ways and finish the season with a few wins under our belt. Unfortunately today was to be one of those days where we just couldn’t quite get control of the game. Gill Errington, Judy Rogers & Roger Crick were involved in a close game to start however when they dropped a 5 to go 14-5 down they were then under pressure to get back in to the game. They won the next end, brought the mat up and won the next 5 ends to close the gap to just 14-12 down going in to the last end however in trying to pick up 2 shots needed for the draw they actually dropped another 5 to lose 19-12.Kishore Seegoolam, Steve McNeill & Matthew Crick got off to a great start and were 17-9 ahead after 13 ends however the wheels then fell off and they dropped 15 shots from the next 4 ends and lost 24-19. Margaret Oliffe, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell got off to a slow start however by the 14th end they had managed to take an 11-10 lead however they too then lost their way and dropped 10 shots from the next 3 ends and ended up losing 20-12. Karen Seegoolam, Joan Sweetman & Pete Coyne had a tough afternoon and were 14-5 down after 9 ends however they kept battling and only ended up losing 18-16. Our only winning rink came from Steph Rose, Carol Crick & Paul Rogers who picked up a 5 on the 4th end and followed that up with 10 further shots from 5 ends and they went on to win 24-15

20th September 2021 – Hazells v Aylesbury Town – Away – Friendly – Lost 61 - 60

This afternoon 4 triples made the short journey to Aylesbury Town and this was to be a close game, although we came out on the wrong side of a 1 shot difference. Teresa Newman, Marion Garrett & Ellen Livett were level at 3-3 after 6 ends however they then dropped 10 shots from the next 3 ends and from there they were always playing catch up. They continued battling but ended up losing 20-11. Paul Warner, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell saw the lead changing on several occasions in their game as they went 4-0 down only to than take a 5-4 lead 2 ends later. They then went 8-6 behind and got back to 14-9 ahead and from this point the managed to hold on to the lead and won 16-12. Norman Garrett, Andrew Mackenzie and Mark Newman won the first 5 ends to go 7-0 ahead however by the 9th end the scores were level at 7-7. They then went 12-7 ahead and also managed to hold on to the lead, winning 16-13. Norman Handley, Brian Abigail & Tony Osborne took an early lead in their game however the hosts got back in to the game and this remained close throughout with the teams going in to the last end level at 16-16 and we managed to pick up the winning shot on the last end.

19th September 2021 – Hazells v Thame – Away – Friendly – Won 65 - 43

Apologies for the late report from this game however I have only just received the scorecards. Unfortunately this game was reduced to just 4 triples and both teams won 2 of the rinks. Paul Rogers, Ann Ramsay & Inger McNeill picked up highest winning rink courtesy of their 27-4 win, which saw them lose just 4 ends during the game and pick up 13 shots from 6 ends without reply. Our other winning rink came from Liz Goodchild, Ellen Livett & Steve McNeill although there game was much closer. After 5 ends we were 4-3 down however we then won the next 6 ends, picking up 12 shots in the process to take a 15-4 lead. Thame then started to come back at us however we managed to hold on for a 17-12 win. Margaret Oliffe, Steve Goodchild & Mark Newman were also involved in a close game and despite picking up a 5 they only managed to win 5 ends during the game and eventually lost 15-12. The final rink saw Steph Rose, Norman Handley & Ian Ramsay play out a close game with neither side picking up more than 2 shots an end however it was the hosts that ended up winning 14-9

3rd to 5th September – Finals Weekend

Thanks to all those of you that entered competitions this year for making sure we cleared the backlog of games that enabled us to have a fantastic finals weekend. The weekend started with the Mens & Ladies Two Wood competitions along with the Open Handicap Singles. In the Mens 2 Wood Keith got off to the better start against Matthew however Matthew then went on a run of winning 8 out of 9 ends to go 14-6 ahead after 13 ends and he managed to take the win with a 16-9 victory. In the Ladies 2 Wood Carol Crick only lost 2 of the first 10 ends to take a 13-2 lead against Sue Watkins and she managed to see the game out, winning 16-7. In the Open Handicap Singles Daniel Watkins didn’t take it easy on his dad and despite having to give Andy a 1 shot head start he soon got himself ahead in the match, picking up 11 shots in 6 ends, without reply. He continued to control the game and won 21-5. On Saturday morning the Mens Triples saw Daniel Watkins, Joe Sweetman & Paul Rogers take on Matthew Crick, John Stone & Mark Newman. Matthews triple picked up a 5 on the first end, only to drop a 4 on the next end and then on the 6th end they dropped a 7 to go 11-8 behind. They managed to put that behind them and by the 14th end they had taken a 15-14 lead. They then dropped another 4 and lost 4 of the last 5 ends which saw Pauls team win 23-17. In the Open Singles Roger Crick was taking on Eddie Chanell and Roger took a 7-1 lead after 5 ends however Eddie then pulled 4 shots back from the next 2 ends but this just seemed to inspire Roger who then won 7 of the next 9 ends to win the match 21-10. In the Mixed Singles League final Steve McNeill was in fine form against Keith Harper, taking a 12-0 lead after just 7 ends. Steve never let Keith settle in to the game and he went on to win 21-6 after just 15 ends. In the final game on Saturday Zoe Watkins & Carol Crick were playing Sue Watkins & Judy Rogers in the Ladies Pairs and this was a great game which saw Judy & Sue pick up 5 shots from the first 2 ends only for Zoe & Carol to level the scores after 5 ends. Sue & Judy then got back in to the lead and after 10 ends they were 13-6 ahead. Zoe & Carol then won the next 5 ends to trail 13-11 and by the 19th end the scores were level at 15-15 and Zoe & Carol managed to win the last 2 ends to win the match 17-15.

On Saturday afternoon Matthew Crick was playing in the London & Southern Counties Lonsdale Singles final at Bounds Green Bowls Club and with no fixtures in our club finals that afternoon some of our members went to Bounds Green to support Matthew, which he greatly appreciated. In just the 2nd season that the club has entered the London & Southern Counties competitions this was a great achievement to reach 1 of the finals. Matthew was playing a very good player from Atherley Bowls Club in Hampshire and despite having a great game himself, Matthew just couldn’t quite keep up with his opponent who was drawing some magnificent shots. At 20-5 down Matthew pulled off a brave shot to save the game and then went on to win the new few ends to get back to 20-10 before finally losing the game on the next end to a fantastic last bowl from his opponent. Well done though Matthew on a great run in the competition representing Hazells.

On Sunday morning we were back to our club finals and in the Mixed Triples Sue Watkins, Matthew Crick & Ian Ramsay were up against Steve Goodchild, Teresa Newman & Andy Watkins and this was to be a tough game for Ian’s triple. This was however a tight game for the first 10 ends with most ends being won with a single shot however it was Steve, Teresa and Mark that took the lead and never gave the lead up, eventually winning the game 16-6. In the new Silver Stars Pairs competition Norman Bonham & George Murdoch were up against Ann Ramsay & Andrew MacKenzie and it was Ann & Andrew that took the early lead, going 6-2 up after 5 ends however by the 10th end they were then 8-6 down. The last 5 ends were also close and they went in to the last end with the scores level at 10-10, with Ann & Andrew picking up 2 shots on the last end for the win. In the Mens Pairs Pete Coyne & Roger Crick struggled to keep in the game against Daniel Watkins & Josh Henly who were both playing some great bowls. Daniel & Josh picked up a 6 on the 2nd end and by the 7th end they were 15-3 ahead and this was always then going to just be a case of controlling the game out, whereas Pete & Roger were having to play catch up and try to force shots to get back in the game. But a fantastic performance from Josh & Daniel saw them take the title with a 26-13 win after 18 ends. Back in action after lunch Daniel Watkins was then playing with Andy in the Ken Vincent Trophy against Ian Ramsay & Keith Harper. Daniel continued his fine form in this game and extended his winning run over the weekend courtesy of his and Andy’s 22-10 win. In the Novice Singles Steve Goodchild was also looking to add to his morning win when he took on Joan Sweetman. This was a great game that saw Joan take a 6-0 lead only to see Steve get back level 2 ends later and Joan then went 14-7 ahead however Steve then fought back and went 15-14 ahead. The game continued in the same way with the lead switching places however it was Steve that managed to finish the game on top, winning 21-18 to secure his 2nd win of the weekend. In the Mens Handicap Singles Roger Crick was looking to put the disappointment of his morning loss in the pairs behind him as he played Mark Newman. Roger got off to a great start going 6-1 ahead after 6 ends and this seemed to settle the nerves as he went on to win 21-13. In the final session of the weekend we saw 4 more great games. In the Colchester Memorial Trophy Kishore Seegoolam & Roger Crick were up against Joan Sweetman & Daniel Watkins and Roger and Kishore got off to the best possible start picking up 40 of the 50 points available from the first 5 ends however Daniel & Joan then picked up 34 of the next 50 available points to reduce the deficit to just 12 points. They then scored maximum points from 2 of the last 5 ends and went on to win 77 to 73, giving Daniel an impressive 5 final wins from the weekend. In the Ladies Handicap Singles we saw another great game between Liz Goodchild & Carol Crick and this was a close game throughout and one that lasted 27 ends however it was Carol Crick that picked up her 3rd win of the weekend courtesy of her 21-13 win. In the Ladies Singles final Sue Watkins was playing Teresa Newman and Sue got off to a great start taking a 7-2 lead after 4 ends however Teresa then started to find her form and after 8 ends Teresa was 9-8 ahead and she only dropped 1 more shot on her way to a 21-9 win and another shot at next seasons Champion of Champions competition. In the Mens Singles we saw another great tussle between Matthew Crick and Andy Watkins and this match went on for 27 ends although having taking the lead after the 1st end Matthew never lost the lead throughout the game. Both players played some great shots during the match, despite the pressure however Matthew eventually won the game 21-18 to earn his debut in the Champion of Champions competition next season.

Thanks to all of you that came along to support the matches over the weekend and to those of you that gave up your time to help with marking and running the BBQ. This all helped to make this a great weekend and as the season now starts to draw to a close please remember that there are still plenty of friendlies left so please make yourself available for as many as possible.

2nd September 2021 – Hazells v Princes Risborough – Away – Lost 94 - 66

This afternoon 5 triples made the short journey to Princes Risborough and this turned out to be a tough afternoon for our team. Marion Garrett, Karen Seegoolam & Rod Bacon were leading 8-5 at the half way stage however the hosts the picked up 4 3’s in the 2nd half and went on to win 19-12. Gill Errington, John Stone & Brian Abigail also struggled and only won 6 ends in the game, losing 19-9. Norman Garrett, Ellen Livett & Andrew MacKenzie were level at 7-7 after 9 ends and still level at 13-13 after 17 ends however they dropped a 3 on the last end to lose 16-13. Sheila Lawlor, Liz Goodchild & Dave Wheeler got off to a slow start and were 8-2 down after 9 ends however they then started to fightback and probably needed a couple more ends as they picked up 5 shots from the last 2 ends and lost 16-13. Steph Rose, Steve Goodchild & Geoff Knott picked up a 5 and a 7 in the first 10 ends to go 15-12 ahead however by the 17th end the scores were level at 19-19 and they then dropped a 5 on the last end to lose 24-19.

22nd August 2021 – Hazells v Cheddington – Friendly – Away – Won 84 - 68

This afternoon we were back at Cheddington, looking to bounce back from the recent Hanson trophy defeat at the same venue. Norman Garrett, Steve Goodchild & Eddie Chanell took the lead after 5 ends and then picked up 11 shots from 4 ends and from there they saw the game out with an 18-13 win. Liz Goodchild, John Stone & Mark Newman had a comfortable win, picking up 2 5’s in the first 5 ends to go 13-1 ahead and they only lost 5 ends in a 26-8 win. Ann Ramsay, Norman Bonham & Paul Rogers got off to a slow start and were 7-2 down after 8 ends however they then started to fight back and would have needed a couple more ends to complete the comeback however they lost 14-13, despite winning 4 of the last 5 ends. Marion Garrett, Joan Sweetman & Teresa Newman won 12 ends in their game as they won 16-9. Maureen Warwick, Geoff Knott & Andrew MacKenzie got off to a slow start in their game and they were 7-2 down after 7 ends however they then picked up 9 shots from the next 5 ends to go 10-7 ahead. Unfortunately that was to be the last end that they won and they ended up losing 24-11.

21st August 2021 – Mixed Triples

Following last weeks successful Mens Triples this week we turned our attention to the Mixed triples which threw up some great games. Ian Ramsay, Matthew Crick & Sue Watkins were up against Liz Goodchild, Carol Crick & Steve McNeill played out a close game and it was Ian’s team that won 18-13. Barbara Ramsay, Judy Rogers & Pete Coyne were playing Norman Bonham, Zoe Watkins and Mark Newman and they won 18-8. The 2 winners of these games played each other in the semi-final and it was Ian, Matthew & Sue that ran out comfortable winners 21-6 to take their place in next weeks final. In the other half of the draw Steve Goodchild, Teresa Newman & Andy Watkins had a comfortable 26-7 win against Tony Brindley, Joan Sweetman & Paul Rogers which meant they would play Ann Ramsay, Anne Farmer & Daniel Watkins the semi-final after their comfortable, 19-10 win against Inger McNeill, Ashley Dean & Roger Crick. The semi-final was also a rather 1 sided affair with Andy’s team winning 28-4

17th August 2021 – Hazells v Wingrave – Friendly – Away – Won – 62 - 53

This evening we were looking to bounce back from the disappointing result on Friday night with a trip to Wingrave with 4 triples. Karen Seegoolam, Geoff Knott & Tony Osborne had a comfortable win, losing just 4 ends in the game that they won 23-5. Carol Chanell, Tony Brindley & Eddie Chanell had a much closer game although the 5 shots they dropped on the 3rd end meant that they were behind for much of the game however they fought back well and narrowly lost 16-13. Leila Brindley, Kishore Seegoolam & Paul Rogers led from the start in their game and never gave up the lead in their 19-8 win. Paul Warner, Ian Ramsay & Judy Rogers couldn’t have got off to a worse start losing the first 8 ends to go 16-0 down however they kept battling away and ended up losing 24-7.

15th August 2021 – Club Mens Triples

After several changes of date for this years Mens Triples we finally managed to get the quarter and semi finals played today with some great games of bowls to be seen. With 6 triples there were 2 games in the morning and 2 triples had a bye through to the afternoon session. Matthew Crick, John Stone & Mark Newman were playing Tony Brindley, George Murdoch & Pete Coyne in the first quarter final and it was Pete’s team that got off to a good start picking up 6 shots from the first 2 ends and by the halfway stage they were 8-7 ahead however they then dropped 6 shots from the next 2 ends and Marks triple finished the stronger of the 2 teams and earnt their place in the semi final with a 23-12 win. Kishore Seegoolam, Ashley Dean & Eddie Chanell were playing Joe Sweetman, Daniel Watkins & Paul Rogers and this was a close game throughout, although Eddies triple picked up a 5 on the 14th end to go 17-13 ahead however they then dropped 2 3’s and ended up drawing 19-19 after 18 ends so they had to play an extra end which saw Joe, Daniel & Paul get the winning shot and the other place in the semi-final. The afternoon semi-finals had drawn the winning team from the morning playing the team with a bye and it was the experience from the morning games that won through. Steve Goodchild, Ian Ramsay & Steve McNeill were up against Matthew, John & Mark and it was Marks team that came out on top in this match, winning 17-7. In the other semi-final Paul, Daniel & Joe were up against Norman Bonham, Josh Henly & Andy Watkins and Pauls team took the early lead however Andy’s team then picked up a 5 on the 7th end to trail by just 1 shot, however they then dropped a 7 & 4 on the next 2 ends and this was to prove to big a deficit to make back up and it was Paul’s team that won 21-13.

7th August 2021 – Hazells v Buckingham West End – Friendly – Away - Won 89 - 85

This afternoon we managed to miss the heavy rain for our game at Buckingham, although had it been at home the game would probably have been abandoned as our green was partially under water when we got back after the game. This was a very close game overall, although we only won 2 of the 6 triples. Gill, Rod & Eddie picked up a 5 on the 6th end to go 8-4 ahead and from there they didn’t give up the lead and went on to win 18-10. Steph, Norman Garrett & Roger were winning alternate ends for the first 11 ends, after which the scores were level at 9-9 however they only won 1 more end and ended up losing 19-13. Margaret, George & Paul Rogers had a tough afternoon on a typical ditchside rink where they found it very difficult to find a line closest to the ditch however they kept battling and narrowly lost 14-10.

6th August 2021 – Hazells v Wendover  – Adams Cup – Home – Won 92 (202) – 90 (172)

This evening we went in to the 2nd leg of this years Adams Cup with a 28 shot lead from the first game however this was to be a much closer game tonight. 11th July 2021 – Hazells v Bletchley St Martins – Friendly – Away  - Won 80 - 79

This afternoon we had 5 triples making the trip to Bletchley St Martins and this was another enjoyable game on a good green with very little between the 2 clubs. This is always a good fixture and today was to be no exception. Leila Brindley, George Murdoch & Mathew Crick got off to a great start picking up a 5 on the 1st end and by the 6th end they were 11-1 ahead however the home side started to get back in to the game and by the 11th end we were 12-8 ahead and we stayed ahead and went in to the last end 18-11 ahead, only to drop a 5 on the last end and finish 18-16 winners.Anne Farmer, Tony Brindley & Roger Crick had a close game on their rink with the led swapping between the 2 teams at regular intervals and we went in to the last end 2 shots ahead however we then dropped a 3 to lose by 1, 17-16.Teresa Newman, Andrew MacKenzie & Pete Coyne spent most of the game trying to play catch up, having one 8-2 down after 7 ends. Karen Seegoolam, Naomi Hooper & Judy Rogers led from the 1st end to the last and finished up winning 15-10. Norman Handley, Matthew Crick & Inger McNeill found themselves behind early on and when they broke for tea were 10-4 down and hoping for the tea jinx to work in their favour. Sunday 13th June 2021 – Hazells v Bletchley St Martins – Mixed Friendly – Won 79 - 39

On a very hot afternoon it was agreed to reduce this game to 15 ends, with no trial ends and this proved a good decision as by the end of the game players were beginning to feel exhausted by the heat. Unfortunately Bletchley St Martins were only able to bring 4 triples for the game so we played 1 rink with all Hazells players. Joan Sweetman, Pete Cotyne & Steve McNeill were just ahead until the 8th end when they dropped a 4 to go 9-6 down and despite the scores remaining tight for the rest of the game they dropped a 2 on last end and lost 15-12. Joe Sweetman, Eddie Chanell & Paul Rogers started slowly in their game going 7-2 down after 6 ends but they then picked up a 4 and this seemed to give them the kick start they needed as they then went on to win the game 17-12. Ann Ramsay, Judy Rogers and Mark Newman picked up highest winning rink with some great bowls for all the team, although Ann in particular had a great game and they lost count of the number of touchers she had during the game, although Mark was later seen down the newsagent stocking up on replacement chalk sticks. Teresa Newman, Carol Chanell & Roger Crick dropped a shot on the first end but then picked up 15 shots from the next 6 ends and on the 10th end they picked up a 6 to go 23-2 ahead and heading for highest winning rink however they then lost the last 4 ends and finished up winning 24-7. The format of his afternoons game changed a couple of times as Chandos only had 15 players available on Friday however by Saturday evening they managed to get 2 more and so rather than having to ask more players to sit out it was agreed that we would play 5 triples and a pair to give everyone a game. Matthew Crick and Andy Watkins played the pairs game on the “Badgers Rink” and this was to be a high scoring game, during which we picked up 2 6’s and 3 4’s on our way to a 36-17 win. Leila Brindley, Inger McNeill & Josh Henly dominated their game from the start and they only lost 3 ends during the game, winning 32-3. Kishore Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & Josh Henly, despite dropping 7 shots from the first 2 ends, only lost 3 more ends during the game, winning 22-12. Highest winning rink for Hazells this afternoon went to Karen Seegoolam, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers who were 6-0 down after 5 ends however they then picked up a 6 on the next end and from there they were never behind again in the game and went on to win 23-11. Teresa Newman, Barbara Ramsay & Inger McNeill played out a close game but when they dropped a 4 on the 12th end they went 13-10 down and from there they just couldn’t get back on level terms and ended up losing 19-13. Norman Handley, Keith Harper & Mark Newman got off to a slow start going 9-0 down after 4 ends and 12-5 down after 8 ends however they then picked up a 7 to level the scores at 12-12. Unfortunately having got back in to the game they immediately dropped a 5 but were back level at 17-17 after 13 ends. Saturday 29th May 2021 – Hazells v Leighton Buzzard – Mixed Friendly – Away – Lost 57-43

Norman Bonham & Maureen Warwick shared a game and they played with Dave Wheeler & Andrew MacKenzie. This turned out to be a tough afternoon and we were 14-0 down after just 5 ends and things didn’t improve much as we lost 31-7. Joan & Joe Sweetman also shared a game and they played with Kishore Seegoolam & Pete Coyne and despite being 11-2 down after 7 ends we then managed to get back in to the game and we picked up a 5 & 6 on our way to a 20-15 win. Karen Seegoolam, Norman Handley & Keith Harper also started slowly and they too were behind early on and by 9 ends they were 8-4 behind however they too fought back well, picking up a 5 on the 15th end to finally take the lead, 14-10, and the held on for a 16-11 win.

This afternoons return match at Kitcheners was cut short by the weather with 11 ends completed on most rinks and with Hazells in control of the game with leads on all rinks. We were at least able to take cover and share a drink with our hosts and wish them a successful season as we will not play them again until next year.

Sunday 9th May 2021 – Hazells v Cheddington – Mixed Friendly  –  Won 165 - 67

Today our friends at Cheddington agreed to play 3 triples at each of the 2 venues in order to comply with current guidelines but also to give as many members as possible a game. As you will have seen from the score line they may have been regretting that decision, although everyone appeared to enjoy the game and it was great to meet up again after such a long time. Sue Watkins, Ashley Dean & Carol Crick picked up a 4 on the first end and from there they were always in control of the game, winning 10 of the ends and ending up 25-15 winners. Norman Handley, Joan Sweetman & Matthew Crick played out a closer game and by the midpoint the scores were level at 6-6 however they went on to win 7 of the last 9 ends to win 15-8. Sunday 9th May 2021 – Buck Cup Warm Up Game – Hazells v Newport Pagnall – Won 77 - 54

This morning we welcomed Newport Pagnall for a Bucks Cup warm up match, suggested by Newport Pagnall, in preparation for the start of this season cup competition. Having just earnt promotion to the cup they were looking to play some early fixtures against other teams in the Cup competition and we were only too pleased to accommodate their request. With the new format of 2 wood triples this would be a great training session for both teams and a chance to see the impact of changes. The speed of the game was certainly noticeable with the match finishing in about 1¾ hours. Despite being so early in the season there were some great ends played on all of the rinks and it was great to get that winning feeling back in preparation for next weeks opener against Waddesdon. As the match was just a friendly practice session both teams switched their sides around during the game to give additional players a chance to play. Ian Ramsay, Tony Osborne, Roger Crick and the Matthew Crick earnt a fairly comfortable 20-10 win, having picked up 7 shots from the first 3 ends. Matthew Crick, Steve McNeill, Paul Rogers and Tony Brindley were always in control of their game although they did drop 5 shots from the last 2 ends but held on for a 19-14 win. Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman played out a close game and only went behind once after the first end, dropping a 2, however they picked up a 3 the next end. That was shortly followed by winning 5 ends in a row to take a 15-6 lead and they went on to win 22-12. Keith Harper, Pete Coyne & Andy Watkins played out a close game, which was probably decided by 2 ends which saw us drop a 4 and a 6 and although we picked up 10 shots from 4 ends ourselves, to go in to the last 2 ends level on 16-16, we then dropped a shot on each of the last 2 ends to lose 18-16.

Saturday 8th May 2021 – Hazells v Chalfont St Giles – Mixed Friendly – Lost 72 - 62

With heavy rain for most of Friday night, into Saturday morning this afternoons friendly was in doubt however the rain eased off around lunchtime ensuring that the game could go ahead. The strong winds didn’t help in what were already tricky conditions. Paul Warner, Judy Rogers and Ian Ramsay took their time adjusting to conditions, going 12-2 down after 10 ends, however once they started to come to terms with the green they put in a great finish, picking up 17 shots from 7 of the remaining 8 ends to win 19-15. Ann Ramsay, Sue Watkins & Paul Rogers were always behind in their game, only winning 6 ends in a 26-10 defeat. Zoe Watkins, Matthew Crick & Andy Watkins couldn’t have asked for a better start picking up 11 shots from the first 5 ends however their hosts then started to get back in to the game and we only won 4 more ends but the big lead meant that they were able to hold on for an 18-13 win. In the final game Barbara Ramsay, Joan Sweetman & Daniel Watkins could have done with an extra end as they came back from 16-9 down with 4 ends to play to lose by 1 shot, 16-15.

Joan Sweetman, Dave Wheeler & Mark Newman got off to a great start going 11-1 ahead after 6 ends however the visitors then managed to get back in to the game and we only won a further 4 ends, losing 19-15.

3rd May 2021 – Colchester Memorial Trophy Qualifying Round

The Colchester Memorial qualifying round was moved to the morning, due to the weather forecast for later that day and this turned out to be a good decision as, despite the cold, we stayed dry and had some enjoyable games. With a full green of 24 bowlers split in 2 groups of 12 (6 pairs) each team played 3 games of this fixed jack competition with 10points available each end for the 4 closest woods. Group A included the pairs of Paul Rogers & Carol Crick, Daniel Watkins & Joan Sweetman, Mark Newman & Barbara Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Naomi Hooper, Matthew Crick & Ann Ramsay and Josh Henly & Zoe Watkins (who kindly stepped in at the last minute). This group was won by Daniel & Joan with a total score of 105. Group B contained Ashley Dean & Judy Rogers, Sue & Andy Watkins, Steve McNeill & Carol Chanell, Teresa Newman & Karen Seegoolam, Roger Crick & Kishore Seegoolam & Ian Ramsay and Inger McNeill. This group was won by Roger & Kishore who will play Daniel & Joan in the final over finals weekend. This was another enjoyable game and thanks to everyone for supporting this competition

2nd May 2021 – Hazells v Kitcheners – Friendly – Home – Won  71 - 62

This afternoon we once again played a reduced fixture of 4 triples, however hopefully we will soon be back to something that is closer to normality. Joe Sweetman played his first friendly for the club this afternoon, with Steve & Josh and although he didn’t get off to a winning start he played well and hopefully enjoyed his game. His triple got off to a bad start going 15-1 down after just 7 ends, although they started to come back at the visitors but it was just too big a deficit to overcome, losing 22-16. Norman Handley, Inger McNeill & Pete Coyne picked up 8 shots from the first 2 ends and never looked back, winning 23-9. Joan Sweetman, Teresa Newman & Tony Osbourne got off to a slow start going 6-2 down after 7 ends however they then picked up a 5, 6 & 4 on the next 3 ends and went on to win 24-12. Anne Farmer, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman found conditions on rink 4 rather tricky this afternoon and only managed to win 6 of the 18 ends, losing 19-8, however the overall score provided Hazells with their 3rd consecutive friendly win of the season.

1st May 2021 – Club Mixed Singles League

This morning we completed the draws for all of the club competitions, details of which can be found later in the newsletter, followed by the start of the Mixed Singles Competition. With 18 competitors, 2 of which were not available for the day, a draw was completed to split these in to 4 groups. Groups A & B included the 2 entrants that were unable to play today and so they have these games to be played during the season. Group C was a closely fought group with Carol Crick, Josh Henly, Joan Sweetman and Matthew Crick. Carol, Joan and Josh all won 2 of their 3 games however going through to the semi-finals, on number of ends won, was Joan. Group D saw George Murdoch, Steve Goodchild, Paul Rogers & Ian Ramsay play out some close games but it was Steve that won all 3 of his games to qualify for the semi-finals.

29th April 2021 – Hazells v Dunstable – Friendly – Won 71 - 53

This afternoon we welcomed 4 triples from Dunstable and with an almost completely different side compared to the weekend we added another win to the start of the season. Marion Garrett, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell played out a close game and the scores were level at 11-11 after 14 ends. Despite taking the next end we then dropped 2 shots on each of the next 2 ends and were only able to pull 1 shot back on the last end, meaning we lost 15-13. Norman Garrett, Kishore Seegoolam & Mark Newman were also involved in a close game finding themselves behind for almost the entire game and with 1 end left to play there were 1 shot behind and they managed to get shot on the last end to earn an 11-11 draw. Karen Seegoolam, Paul Warner & Andrew MacKenzie were 9-0 down after 6 ends however they fought back well picking up 11 shots over the next 6 ends and were then level at 11-11. Despite dropping another 4 we were still able to win 4 of the last 6 ends on our way to a 19-16 win. Geoff Knott, Dave Wheeler & Anne Farmer picked up highest winning rink of the match in a game that saw them pick up 3 fives in the game on their way to a 28-11 win

Sunday 25th April – Hazells v Wingrave Friendly – Won 136 - 72

We had our first friendly in almost 18 months this afternoon and in order to accommodate as many people as possible that wanted to play, both clubs agreed to play 3 triples at home and away. At home Karen Seegoolam, Ashley Dean & Andy Watkins got off to a good start, although with Josh Henly playing for Wingrave as they had a player drop out at last minute, this turned out to be a tougher game than it may otherwise have been. We went 5-1 ahead after 5 ends however by the 10th end we were 8-6 down but we then went on to pick up 8 shots from the next 4 ends before going on to win 15-13. Rod Bacon, Matthew Crick & Daniel Watkins lost the 1st 3 ends in their game however they then picked up 7 shots from the next 3 ends. By the 12th end they were 14-8 down but they then picked up 9 shots from the next 3 ends and went on to win 20-17. In the final game at home Sue Watkins, Kishore Seegoolam & Roger Crick got off to a slow start going 6-2 down after 6 ends however they then got back into the game and only lost 2 more ends on their way to a 23-9 win.  Away from home Judy Rogers, Ian Ramsay & Mark Newman picked up a 5 and 6 in the first 5 ends and they were always in control of this game and ended up winning 31 – 12. Teresa Newman, Pete Coyne & Steve McNeill had a slower start with the scores level at 3-3 after 5 ends however they then went on to win 8 of the next 10 ends to go 23-5 ahead and they ended up winning 24-8. The final game saw Inger McNeill, Eddie Chanell & Paul Rogers drop a 4 on the first end however they picked up a 3 the next end and on the 5th end they picked up a 7 to start a winning run of 5 consecutive ends to take a 19-6 lead and although the hosts started to get back in to the game we ended up winning 23-13.

Saturday 24th April 2021 – Club Friendly Game

This afternoon with no friendly scheduled 22 of our members turned up for a fun competition played in the American Tournament style. We played 3 games of 7 ends with each bowler drawing their team and playing position prior to each game. Each bowler then records their own score across the 3 games and the top 3 bowlers received a cash prize. On a warm sunny afternoon it was great to see so many people back enjoying each others company and a fun game of bowls, whilst adhering to the current covid guidelines. Despite being very early in the season the green was bowling well, despite a few little bumps along the way, which meant there was some very good games being played. In 3rd place this afternoon was George Murdoch with a score of 26 shots from the 21 ends. Andy & Daniel Watkins tied for the lead with 27 shots each however the winner was determined by shot difference and with a shot difference of +13 compared to his dads +8 it was Daniel that started this season as he finished last season, in winning ways. Congratulations Daniel and thanks to everyone that came along and supported the afternoon and lets hope for many more enjoyable days this season
