9th October 2016 – President v Captain’s Match
This afternoon President Tom and Captain Steve selected their teams to battle it out for the winter bragging rights. The match was played with 1 pairs match, 4 triples and 1 triple v rink. John Griffiths, Kate Griffiths & Steve McNeill played Ellen Livett, Carol Crick & Tom Holland and it was the Presidents team that got off to a great start winning the 1st 5 ends to go 7-0 ahead. Unfortunately it wasn’t to get much better for Steve’s team as they only managed to win 5 ends in the match, picking up a single shot on each of those ends. The final score saw a 19-5 win for the President. Barbara Ramsay, Roy Richardson & Jan Moores were representing the Captain against Kath Cowan, Lionel Cheshire & Neil Thompson and this was to be a close game throughout and they went in to the last ends with the scores tied at 14-14. It was the Captain’s team that picked up 3 shots on the last end to earn the 17-14 win. Paul Warner, Ann Ramsay & John Smith represented the Captain’s team against Don Russell, Norman Handley & Ann Richardson representing the President, although am not sure why Ann, our ladies captain, was playing for the President !! However it was Ann’s team that won the game 13-9. Dan Livett, Len Tuffs & Mark Newman were playing on the Captain’s team against Teresa Newman, Jack Pipe & Keith Harper. Despite losing the 1st 2 ends Mark’s team went on to win 10 of the next 11 ends on their way to a 20-10 win. This was a close game throughout and with the scores level at 14-14 after 18 ends it was Brian & Kishore that then picked up 5 shots on the next end to take a lead in to the last 2 ends that wouldn’t be overturned. The final score in the match saw the President’s team win 98-83 however the 1 consolation for Steve was that the match was tied with 3 wins each.
9th October 2016 – Mixed Singles League Final – Ellen Livett v Nick Griffiths
This morning Ellen & Nick played the final of this years Mixed Singles League Competition. Firstly I would like to thank them both for arranging & playing their group games and apologies on behalf of those that were unable to fulfil their fixtures. The final itself was a great game played to the usual singles format of first to 21 shots, rather than the 7 ends played in the group stage. Ellen took the early lead going 5-1 ahead after 4 ends however 4 ends later the scores were level at 6-6. Nick then won the next 4 ends to take a 12-6 lead only for Ellen to win the next 4 to go 16-12 ahead. Yet again Nick managed to win the next couple of ends however when Ellen won the shot on the 19th end she then went on to pick up a single shot on each of the next 4 ends to win the match 21-15. This was a great game and congratulations to both players and a special well done to Ellen.

12th June 2016 – Hazells v Bletchley St Martins – Friendly – Won 110 - 108
On an afternoon that threatened heavy rain and thunderstorms the game didn’t get off to a good start as we realized that we should have been playing 6 Mixed Rinks whereas we had turned up with just 6 triples. With Bletchley having spare bowlers the captains agreed to play 7 triples with 3 Bletchley bowlers playing for Hazells for the afternoon. At a venue where have played out some great games in the past against a competitive side this was always going to be a tough game. On rink 1 Andrew MacKenzie, Kim Challinor & Gerry Moores got off to a slow start going 10 – 5 down after 10 ends however we went on to win the remaining 8 ends to earn a 19-10 win. Nina Griffiths, Len Tuffs & Roger Crick got off to a great start, racing to an 11-1 lead however the hosts slowly started to get back in to the game and despite dropping 5 shots on the last end we managed to hold on for a 17-16 win. Don Russell, Colin Beasley & Eddie Chanell found it tough going and were behind throughout the game and despite keeping the scores close for most of the game we lost 15-10. John Griffiths, Rod Bacon & Jez Maughan took advantage of the “home” player on their team to earn the highest winning rink of the afternoon with a 29-8 win. Dan Livett, Carol Crick & Pete Coyne played out a very close game which never saw more than 2 shots between the teams and they went in to the last end with the scores level at 13-13 all however it was the hosts that picked up the shot on the last end for a 14-13 win. Danny Stewart, Bob Perry & Lionel Cheshire got off to a slow start and although they picked up 4 shots on the 13th end to close the gap to just 11-9 down they then went on to drop 11 shots in the next 3 ends and finished up losing 22-14. In the final game Carol Chanell, Matthew Crick & Neil Thompson took 8 ends before they picked up their first shot and things didn’t get much better after that as they only won 5 ends in the game, losing 23-8.

This afternoon we welcomed Watlington Bowls Club to Hazells for a 5 triples friendly. 27th to 30th May 2016 – Duck Doo Dah Tour to Great Yarmouth
This weekend saw 27 of our members join Kim’s Ducky Doo Dah tour and spirits were high as soon as the coach arrived to get the weekend underway. The Tyske’s & Wine were flowing from the off and that may have had an impact on the result of our first game at Bradwell. With 6 triples we had just 1 rink that drew their game, Barbara Ramsay, Norman Bonham & Anne Farmer finishing 17-17. Carol Chanell, Ian Ramsay & Brian Abigail were the first winners of the Ducky Shower Caps which they had to wear for the game on day 2, representing their achievement of highest losing rink, 26-16. The Friday evening was rounded off with some live entertainment at the hotel with plenty more wine & spirits consumed. On Saturday we started the day with a crazy golf competition that Steve won by 1 shot from Ian, who picked up a penalty for playing the wrong ball. In the afternoon we visited Martham Bowls Club where we were treated to a fantastic green, welcoming members and a cheap bar, not that some people needed it following the night before !!!. Today’s match involved 6 rinks and with all the teams desperate to make sure they didn’t wear the ducks the following day there was some determination from each rink to win their game. With 3 winning rinks to each side it was Keith & Hazel Harper and Carol & Roger Crick taking highest winning rink for Hazells with a 23-8 win, closely followed by Anne Farmer, Jack Pipe, Inger & Steve McNeill with a 30-16 win. The highest losing rink today went to Maureen Warwick, Dan Livett, Len Clark & Lionel Cheshire who lost 31-11. Unfortunately the final result saw another loss for Hazells, 117-13. When we got back to the hotel we celebrated Neil’s birthday and once again the wine was flowing freely. On Sunday 8 of us had a Tenpin Bowling completion before we visited Caister Bowls Club where we received a warm welcome although it was soon made clear that in Norfolk there are many clubs with large memberships split between an A & B team as they play in multiple leagues and that weekend friendlies are a rarity and that they are usually played by the “B” teams. The green here didn’t play as well as the previous day and we struggled once again to come to terms with both the green and the strong winds blowing in off the sea and we had just 2 winning rinks with John Simmons, Andrew MacKenzie, Neil Thompson & Kim Challinor winning 27-21 and Keith Harper, Ann Ramsay, Steve & Inger McNeill won 28-17. Winning the caps for the last day were Lionel Cheshire, Len Clark, Roger & Carol Crick who lost 31-8. The final match score saw a 3rd defeat for Hazells; 114-158. On Monday we stopped at Connaught Bowls Club on the way home for our final game of the weekend. Looking for our first win of the weekend we once again won on 3 rinks and lost on the other 3 and it was Neil Thompson, Barbara Ramsay & Brian Abigail that took highest winning rink 22-12 and highest losing rink, earning themselves the duck shower caps to wear on the coach for the rest of the journey home, were Anne Farmer, Hazel & Keith Harper who lost 22-9. Unfortunately the weekend finished the same way it started, with a 95-101 defeat. Despite the 4 losses all those that attended seemed to enjoy the weekend and special thanks went to Kim for organizing a great weekend and thoughts have already turned to repeating the tour next year so see below for details.

With points scored for the 4 closest woods to the jack this format requires a good drawing game and teams to build the head to get as many scoring woods as possible.
