COUNTY CHAMPIONS

What another great week for our club with Judy Rogers & Teresa Newman becoming the Buckinghamshire Ladies Pairs Champions following their win at Chesham on Sunday 28th July. 

MID BUCKS LEAGUE  & CUP DOUBLE WINNERS

Following our success in the league competition this season we managed to complete the double at the weekend with a 4-1 win against Long Crendon in the knockout cup. This rounded off a great season for the club and specials thanks to everyone that has supported the team throughout the season

Champion of Champions

Teresa Newman was in action at Leamington on Wednesday, in front of many of our members who were able to go along and support. Although I was unable to go myself I believe from the WhatsApp chat that despite a disappointing start, going 20-7 down, Teresa put up a great fight and managed to get back to 20-16, before unfortunately losing 21-16. Well done though Teresa on this great achievement to reach Leamington with some great wins on the way.

Ladies National Pairs @ Leamington

Teresa Newman & Judy Rogers will be at Leamington on Wednesday 14^th August at 2pm in the Ladies Pairs competition playing Devon so if you are able to go along and support I am sure they would appreciate it. Good Luck Ladies and from those of us that are unable to be there in person to support you I know the whole club is behind you.

13^th October 2019 – Corners Competition

Having had to cancel last years Corners Competition due to the weather it was looking like this years event was heading for the same fate. However as the rain eased off 13 of our members turned out, determined not to let the weather beat them. Although we had to abandon the diagonal corners early in the competition due to the amount of surface water we were still able to get 10 corners in. Despite the weather and limited competitors there was still a great atmosphere with the usual banter and people looking to knock their opponents bowls off the rink. The morning ended with Ian (2), Kim (2), Roger (2), Kishore, Paul Warner, David Logan and Norman Garrett picking up the prizes. Due to the popularity of this competition we will look to play it earlier next season, perhaps on a Friday night, so watch this space next year

12^th October 2019 – Men v Ladies Competition

So I am not sure if it was the men running scared or the ladies with a greater determination to beat the men but we only had 9 men compared to the 12 ladies. So we agreed to play triples versus rinks with the mens triples losing 25% of their score. Norman Garrett, Sid Brotherston & Paul Rogers got off to a great start against Margaret Oliffe, Gill Errington, Karen Seegoolam & Kim Challinor, going 12-0 ahead after 5 ends. The men continued to control this game and only lost 4 of the 18 ends as they won 29-8 (21-8). Norman Handley, Steve McNeill & David Logan had a much tougher game against Marion Garrett, Joan Sweetman, Ellen Livett & Judy Rogers and it was the ladies that took a 6-4 lead after 5 ends and by the 11^th end were 11-6 ahead. However the men started to get back in to the game and went in to the last end 14-13 ahead. However knowing they were going to lose 25% of their score, 4 shots, they were determined to pick up a good score on the last end and they actually got a 6 to win 20-13 (15-13). Kishore Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick got off to a flying start against Steph Rose, Cath Cowan, Ann Ramsay & Carol Crick as they went 18-1 ahead after just 7 ends. The ladies then picked up a 5 and slowly started to get back in to the game however they had too big a deficit to overcome and the men won 27-13 (20-13) to take all 3 rinks

6^th October 2019 – Captain v President

For this years match we decided to change the format and make a day of the competition, with Mark preparing a great BBQ again for lunch. The day started with a draw for the 2 teams and then Tom & Steve had to pick their 6 players to play the opening round of singles. Each game was played over 7 ends and it was the Captains team that took a 4 ½ to 1 ½ point lead in to the Pairs. The Presidents team managed to get a point back from the pairs as they won 3 ½ to 2 ½ . The President’s team also had the better of the triples, winning 3 of the 4 matches to level the overall score. This then left us the rinks matches and the 2^nd session of singles. The Captains team won 2 of the 3 rinks games plus the additional pairs game to give everyone a game. The day was rounded of with each team winning 3 of the singles and so the Captains team of Steve, June, Roger, Paul, Teresa, Sid, Barbara, Karen, Gill, Kishore, Brian, Kim, Eddie, Norman & Ann Ramsay won 14-12. 5^th October 2019 – Hazells v Houghton Regis – Mixed Friendly – Home – Lost 98 - 81

In our last friendly of the season we welcomed a strong team from Houghton for what turned out to be tough afternoon for Hazells. Norman Garrett, Sid Brotherston & Matthew Crick lost the 1^st 7 ends in their game to go 12-0 down however they then started to get back in to the game after picking up 8 shots before losing the next 2 ends and they went in to the last end 16-13 down but dropped a 5 to lose 21-13. Marion Garrett, Judy Rogers & Mark Newman only won 7 ends during their game and were on the wrong end of a 21-8 scoreline. Teresa Newman, Inger McNeill & Steve McNeill started their game well and after they picked up a 6 on the 10^th end to go 15-3 ahead it was looking good for the home side however 5 ends later they were just 1 shot ahead but we managed to hold on for an 18-15 win. Kishore Seegoolam & Carol Crick took the lead after 3 ends and from there they never lost the lead and went on to win 17-12. Joan Sweetman, Kim Challinor & Paul Rogers had a tough afternoon, winning just 6 ends on their way to a 15-7 defeat. Karen Seegoolam, Norman Handley 7 Roger Crick went 5-1 ahead after 3 ends and were in control until the 12^th end when they finally lost the lead to go 12-11 down, however a positive finish saw us regain the lead and win 18-14.

29^th September 2019 – Hazells v Long Crendon – Mid Bucks Knockout Cup Final – Won 4 -1

This morning we were due to play our cup final at Aylesbury Town however it had previously been agreed that if the weather prevented us from playing there the game would be switched to Foxhills. Following a night of rain we arrived at Aylesbury Town nervously looking at the green and soon found that their green was unplayable and so the prospect of playing an outdoor final indoors loomed large. Steve spoke to the Long Crendon team and despite previously agreeing to go indoors they advised that they wouldn’t play indoors and so we decided to check our green was fit to play. Despite a couple of “softer” areas on the green it was soon agreed that our green was perfectly playable and so Long Crendon agreed to play at Hazells, slightly ironic though as originally the final was due to be played at Long Crendon and we asked for it to be switched to neutral green!! So we finally got the game underway and Matthew Crick was playing in the 2 Wood and he got off to a great start however his opposition slowly got back in to the game and by the 19^th end the scores were level. We then dropped a shot on the 20^th end and so knew we needed to win the last end. Unfortunately we lost that end to see the 1^st point go to Long Crendon. In the singles Keith Harper had made a slow start but as soon as he started to get his eye in he managed to take a lead and went on to win his match and level the tie at 1-1. Roger Crick & Mark Newman had a tough match in the pairs and the scores were close up until the 15^th end when we managed to pick up a 5 to go 7 shots ahead and from there we controlled the game to go 2-1 ahead. The triple of Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers got off to a flying start as they went 10-1 ahead and despite Long Crendon picking up a few ends to close the gap we played some great bowls and this point looked an almost certainty, and so it turned out, to get a 3-1 lead and the match. The rink of Daniel Watkins, Ian Ramsay, Ashley Dean & Andy Watkins also took control of their game early on and once ahead they never lost the lead and went on to win the match and earn us a 4-1 win. Another great performance from the team which saw us finish the season as Mid Bucks League & Cup Double Winners.  What a season and well done to all those involved in either playing in the matches or for the great support that you gave us over the season.

28^th September 2019 – Hazells v Chalfont St Giles – Mixed Friendly – Home – Won – 85 - 73

Again this afternoon the match was reduced by a rink at our opponents request and so apologies go out to all those of you that put your names down for this match and didn’t get a game. Considering the season is almost over it was great to see 30 names up for this game when we only originally needed 18. For those that were able to play there were some very close games with some great bowls on show. Matthew Crick, Karen Seegoolam & June Redding started slowly and soon found themselves 10-3 down however they then picked up 8 shots from the next 3 ends and from there they managed to hold on to the lead and won 17-16. Jack Pipe, Ellen Livett & Dave Wheeler had a great battle in their game as they went 9-3 ahead after 7 ends, however 6 ends later they were 13-11 down but a run of 4 winning ends put them back in front and they also held on for a 17-14 win. Joan Sweetman, Ann Ramsay & Keith Harper were behind for most of their game however when they got back to just 14-13 down after 15 ends it looked like they might snatch a late victory however it was not to be the case as they lost the last 3 ends to lose 19-13. Barbara Ramsay, Kishore Seegoolam & David Logan had a comfortable afternoon as they only lost 4 ends during their 23-6 win. Norman Handley, Roy Richardson & Ann Richardson must have had a jinxed rink this afternoon as there were several wrong biases bowled in a game that they narrowly lost 18-15.

14^TH September 2019 – Hazells v Princes Risborough  - Mixed Friendly – Away – Lost 75 - 50

This afternoon’s friendly against Princes Risborough was reduced to 4 triples at Princes Risborough’s request. This was to be an unusual afternoon as 3 of the 4 rinks had the same final score and unfortunately we only had the 1 winning rink. Margaret Oliffe, Rod Bacon & Judy Rogers got off to a great start, going 12-2 ahead after 7 ends however they then lost the next 6 ends to find themselves 13-12 behind however they managed to get back on top and ended up winning 17-15. Karen Seegoolam, Dave Wheeler & Ann Richardson got off to a very slow start as they were 12-1 down after 7 ends and despite pulling the score back to 13-8 they were unable to overcome the deficit and lost 20-11. Sheila Lawlor, June Redding & Denzil Ashcroft had a game of 2 halves as they were 9-3 ahead after 9 ends but only won 1 more end during the match and they lost 20-11. Andrew MacKenzie, Kishore Seegoolam & Paul Rogers were 9-1 down after 7 ends and despite winning 4 of the next 5 ends they were unable to get back in to the game and also lost 20-11

22^nd September 2019 – Hazells v Tring - Mixed Friendly – Home – Won – 89 - 67

With the season slowly coming to an end we welcomed Tring to Hazells today for a 5 triples game. Andrew MacKenzie, Josh Henly & Inger McNeill went 7-3 behind in their game after 7 ends however they managed to get ahead 4 ends later and on the 16^th end they picked up a 5 which helped them on their way to a 16-13 win. Naomi Hooper, Pete Coyne & Mark Newman went 5-0 ahead after 3 ends however they then lost the next 5 ends to go 9-5 behind. This seemed to give them the incentive they needed to get back in to the game and a determined finish saw them win 18-14. Paul Warner, Judy Rogers & Roger Crick had a comfortable afternoon as they only lost 5 ends on their way to a highest winning rink score of 30-7. Marion Garrett, Denzil Ashcroft & Steve McNeill played out an excellent game which was close throughout and actually ended up in a 15-15 draw. Norman Garrett, Carol Crick & Paul Rogers had an afternoon to forget as the luck was not on their side and they were 12-1 down after 9 ends and despite winning 5 of the remaining ends they lost 18-10.

21^st September 2019 – Hazells v Long Crendon - Mixed Friendly – Away – Lost 101 - 69

With our Knockout Cup Final coming up between our 2 clubs we decided to put out teams that would give nothing away about our line up for the final. Ellen Livett, Dave Wheeler & Judy Rogers had a tough afternoon, winning just 7 ends in their game and they lost 27-11. Norman Garrett, Sid Brotherston & Carol Crick were playing well in their game however a disastrous end to the game saw them lose the last 5 ends to go from 14-7 ahead to lose 20-14. Steph, Steve & Inger had a disappointing afternoon as they only won 6 ends during their 24-12 defeat. Gill, Roger & Denzil were 11-3 down after 11 ends however they then started to get back in to the game and they went in to the last end 12-11 down and were unable to get the last shot they needed and lost 13-11. Sheila Lawlor, Paul Rogers & Rod Bacon got off to a bad start in their game and they were 12-3 down after 8 ends. We then picked up 6 shots from the next 3 ends and just when it started to look like we may get back in to the game we then lost the next 3 ends and were 17-9 down with just 4 ends to play. On the 16^th end they picked up a 6 and went in to the last end 17-16 down and then they picked up a 4 to earn a hard fought 21-17 win

18^th September 2019 – Hazells v Aylesbury Town – Men’s Friendly – Home – Lost – 67-69

This afternoon we welcomed close neighbors Aylesbury Town to our green for a 4 triples friendly. Dave Wheeler, Roy Richardson & Brian Abigail got off to a slow start as they went 10-1 down after 6 ends and despite getting back to 10-9 down after 10 ends they then lost the next 4 ends and were unable to keep with their opponents and lost 20-11. Norman Handley, Sid Brotherston & Tony Osborne struggled this afternoon and only won 7 ends during their 20-9 defeat. Norman Garrett, Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan picked up 9 shots from the 1^st 3 ends although after 10 ends the scores were level at 13-13 however we went on to win 7 of the remaining ends, including picking up an 8 on the last end to win 30-16. Andrew MacKenzie, Kishore Seegoolam & Rod Bacon were involved in a close game with no more than 2 shots between the sides until we picked up 5 shots from 2 ends to go in to the last end 17-12 ahead and we then just dropped a single shot on the last end to win 17-13.

14^th September 2019 – Hazells v Thame - Mixed Friendly – Home – Won – 115 - 72

This afternoon Norman Garrett, Denzil Ashcroft & Steve McNeill put on a great display of bowls and were 15-0 ahead after 6 ends and they continued to dominate the game throughout and went on to win 30-7. Ann Ramsay, Andrew MacKenzie & Paul Rogers played out a close game and they picked up a 5 on the 7^th end to take a 12-5 lead and from there they went on to win 23-17. Marion Garrett, Judy Rogers & Pete Coyne also started well in their game and were 11-0 ahead after 6 ends and they only lost 6 ends during the game as they went on to win 22-7. Joan Sweetman, Roy Richardson & Ann Richardson were 9-1 ahead after 4 ends and despite winning only 8 of the 18 ends they still managed to win 22-18. Norman Handley, Dave Wheeler & Inger McNeill got off to a disappointing start as they lost 5 of the 1^st 6 ends and from 13-1 down they were always playing catch up and by the 14^th end the scores were level at 16-16. Unfortunately we then only won 2 of the last 5 ends and lost 23-18

13^th September 2019 – Hazells v Leighton Buzzard - Mixed Friendly – Away – Won – 65-41

This evening we had our floodlit friendly at Leighton Buzzard and despite a slight mix up in the format of the evening the game got underway, although we did have a couple of Leighton bowlers playing for us. Kim Challinor, Josh Henly & Tony Osborne took a few ends to get used to the floodlights and spent most of the game playing catch up. In fact they went in to the last end 15-13 down but managed to pick up a 4 to get a surprise 17-15 win. Judy Rogers, Inger McNeill, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers also started slowly and were 7-2 down after 5 ends however they then picked up 7 shots from the next 2 ends and from there they pushed on to win 6 of the last 8 ends to win 21-14. Denzil Ashcroft was joined by Leighton bowlers and the home knowledge helped them to pick up a 7 on the 5^th end and this was just a warm up for better things to come as they picked up a hot shot on the very next end to take a 19-2 lead after 6 ends. They picked up a 6 3 ends later and went on to win 27-12.

8^th September 2019 – Hazells v Wing - Mixed Friendly – Home – Lost 92 - 87

This afternoon’s match saw some high scoring rinks for both teams. Our highest winning rink went to Karen Seegoolam, Denzil Ashcroft & Steve McNeill courtesy of their 28-10 win. Marion Garrett, Kim Challinor & Paul Rogers were not far behind as they picked up 14 shots from 7 ends on their way to a 25-14 win. Norman Garrett, Gerry Moores & Ann Richardson didn’t fair so well as they only won 6 ends in the game and they lost 24-10. Kishore Seegoolam, Andrew MacKenzie & Inger McNeill picked up 11 shots from 4 ends in the middle of their game to go 15-10 ahead and from there they held on to the lead and won 19-13. The final rink saw the highest score of the day and unfortunately is was not in our favour as Maureen Warwick, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell only won 4 ends in their 31-5 defeat.

8^th September 2019 – Hazells v Chalfont St Giles – Burnham Plate Final – Lost 20-11

This morning our ladies were at Iver Heath for the final of the Burnham Plate and during the trial ends they soon recognized the pace of the green was going to be a challenge. After a disappointing start to the game we were always playing catch up and despite playing some great shots we eventually lost 20-11. A great achievement though to have reached the final in the first year of entering the competition, in recent years at least, and so lets hope we can go 1 better next season.

7^th September 2019 – Hazells v Houghton Regis – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won 75 - 64

Unfortunately we struggled to get a team together for this, usually very popular, fixture however Houghton Regis were happy to play the game with just 4 triples rather than the expected 6. Denzil Ashcroft, Tony Brindley & Roger Crick won their first 3 ends however then lost the next 4 but by the 10^th end the game was all square at 8-8. Unfortunately they then dropped 7 shots over the next 2 ends and ended up losing 20-12. Leila Brindley, Josh Henly & Steve McNeill played out a close game for the first half and the scores were level at 6-6 after 10 ends however they then picked up 15 shots from the next 5 ends on their way to a 26-11 win. Judy Rogers, Sid Brotherston & Carol Crick started well and took a 7-1 lead after 6 ends however they then dropped 8 shots from the next 3 ends and despite a late fightback they just lost 17-14. Norman Handley, Matthew Crick & Paul Rogers shared the ends with Houghton, winning 9 ends each, however picking up a 7 on the 3^rd end and a 6 on the 10^th helped us to a 23-16 win.

Thursday 29^th August 2019 – Hazells v Princes Risborough – Friendly – Home – Lost 78 - 50

This afternoon we welcomed Prince Risborough for a triples friendly and this turned out to be the visitors afternoon as we only managed to win on 1 rink and that was by just 1 shot. Marion Garrett, Dave Wheeler & David Logan played out a close game and the scores were level at 10-10 after 12 ends however the visitors finished the stronger winning 15-12. Ellen Livett, Joan Sweetman & Jan Moores were 8-1 down after 6 ends however we fought back well and we were 17-17 after 17 ends and managed to pick up a single shot on the last end to win 18-17. Gary West, Geoff Knott & Brian Abigail took the early lead in their game however every time they edged ahead the visitors managed to get back on level terms and they went on to pick up 6 shots from the last 4 ends to win 17-12. Margaret Oliffe, Rod Bacon & Andrew MacKenzie got off to a disappointing start, losing the first 8 ends to go 15-0 down and this was to be too big a deficit to get back and we only won 5 ends in the 29-8 defeat.

Wednesday 28^th August 2019 - BCBL

This evening was the last week in the season and with 3 of our teams having already won their divisions we could go in to the games without any pressure and could relax and enjoy the games. In Division 2 the Wunders were at Cheddington Bees however they weren’t able to round off the league winning campaign with another win as they lost 20-9. In the same division the Cruisers were at home to Aston Clinton Diamnonds and they too finished on the wrong side of a 16-12 scoreline. In division 3 the Hotshots were looking to finish the season with maximum points against Waddesdon Longbows. They got off to a great start picking up a 5 on the first end and from there they were always in control of the game, winning 23-16 to give them their 100% record and promotion to division 2. In Division 4 the Nutters were also looking to maintain their 100% record and despite going behind early on in their game they managed to get in to the game and earn a 16-12 win and promotion to division 2. In the same division the Seekers were at Aylesbury Drakes and they lost 23-16.

Monday 26^th August 2019 – International Tournament

This afternoon we had 28 members taking part in the International Tournament when bowlers were split in to 2 teams, England & Wales v Rest of the World team. Due to the hot temperatures we decided to play 2 rinks and 2 triples over just 15 ends. Ann Ramsay, Marion Garrett, Ann Richardson & Carol Crick were playing for the England/Wales team against Ellen Livett, Kishore Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & David Logan and they got off to a great start going 9-0 ahead after 3 ends however they then dropped 10 shots over the next 5 ends and were 15-14 ahead with 2 ends to go however it was the rest of the world team that picked up 4 shots from the last 2 ends to win 18-15. Paul Warner, Margaret, Josh & Roger were also playing for England & Wales against Sue Watkins, Andrew MacKenzie, Daniel Watkins & Steve McNeill and it was the rest o fthe world team that stormed to a 12-1 lead after 6 ends however the England team managed to get back to just 13-11 down with 2 ends to play but they dropped another 5 shots to lose 18-11. The triples games were to provide the England & Wales team with their best results as Norman, June & Mark won 20-8 against Barbara, Karen & Paul, which included a 7 on the 14^th end. Sheila, Roy & Ashley were 3-2 down against Sid, Judy & Andy however they only lost 1 more end on their way to a 26-4 win for England/Wales and an overall win 72-48.

Saturday 24^th August – Jubilee Shield

This afternoon we had 24 bowlers taking part in the Jubilee Shield which saw bowlers drawn in triples and split between 2 groups. Each team would play the other 3 teams in their group, scoring a point for each end they won and 3 points for winning a 7 end match. In group A Mark Newman, Karen Seegoolam & Anne Farmer qualified for the final despite losing their first game 6-5. They managed to win all 7 ends in their 3^rd game to finish with 21 points, with the 2^nd place team of Paul Rogers, Josh Henly & Naomi Hooper finishing on 15 points. In group B Carol Crick, Sid Brotherston & Matthew Crick won their first 2 matches, picking up 16 points and their final game was against Ann Ramsay, Kin Challinor & Roger Crick who had also won their first 2 games but only had 15 points, so the winner of this game would progress to the final. With a 9-6 win it was Ann, Kim & Roger that reached the final. After a short break the final was played over 7 ends and Ann, Kim & Roger won the first 4 ends to go 5-0 ahead however Anne, Karen & Mark got 2 shots back before Ann, Kim & Roger won the next end and finished up winning the match 6-3.

Friday 23^rd August 2019 – Mid Bucks Knockout Cup Semi Final – Hazells v Gerrards Cross – Home – Won 3-2

Having already beaten Bletchley Town & Waddesdon in this seasons competition the tough games just keep coming with Gerrards Cross the latest opponent in the semi final. Having already hosted Gerrards Cross in the Top Club earlier in the season we knew this was going to be a tough match but that on our day were perfectly capable of winning. Matthew Crick got us off to a great start in the 2 Wood against Dave Simpson. Despite taking a 9-3 lead Matthew then lost the next 6 ends to go 10-9 down. However he didn’t lose his nerve and went on to win 16-14 and the first point to Hazells. Keith Harper faced a tough match in the singles against Alan Price and after 8 ends the scores were level at 7-7 however Alan then won the next 6 ends to go 18-7 ahead and the game finished in a 21-9 defeat, levelling the scores at 1-1. In the pairs Roger Crick & Mark Newman took control of their game from the start, going 10-0 ahead after 4 ends against Duncan Gauld & Chris Harvey. By the 12^th end we were 15-9 ahead however we then dropped an 8 to go 17-15 down but this only spurred us on and we won the next 3 ends to go 20-17 ahead. We went in to the last end 27-19 ahead and all the Gerrards Cross team could do was try and kill the end which they were unable ot do and we won 32-19 to take a 2 – 1 lead. In the triples Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers we replaying Keith Young, George Reid & Keith Patrick and we took an early 6-3 lead however by the 9^th end we were 10-7 down. We then picked up a 5 but despite getting back in front we only won 2 more ends and lost 21-14 to tie the match at 2-2. In the rinks Daniel Watkins, Ian Ramsay, Ashley Dean & Andy Watkins dropped a 4 on the first end however we then won the next 4 ends to go 6-4 ahead. Although we dropped 3 shots from the next 2 ends we then won 7 ends in a row to go 15-7 ahead and from there we went on to win 19-13 and claim the 3-2 win to see us progress to the final against Long Crendon

25^th August 2019 – Hazells v Potten End – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won 93 - 70

This afternoon we travelled to Potten End with a strong side, including some that were looking to get some last minute practice before finals weekend. Teresa Newman, Ian Ramsay & Inger McNeill went 8-1 ahead after 5 ends and from there they continued to control the game and went on to win 16-9. The family team of Hazell, Norman & Keith had an enjoyable, but tough, afternoon together as they only won 5 ends during their 17-6 defeat. Norman Bonham, Roy Richardson & Paul Rogers were involved in a game of 2 halves with us going 13-2 down after 8 ends however we only lost 2 more ends in the game, narrowly losing 16-15. Anne Farmer, Josh Henly & Steve McNeill took the early lead and were 11-4 ahead after 11 ends however they didn’t win another end and lost 16-11. Rod Bacon, Ann Richardson & Carol Crick dominated their game throughout, losing just 5 ends on their way to an 18-6 win.  Maureen Warwick, Sid Brotherston & Mark Newman managed to go 1 better than Carol’s triple as they only lost 4 ends in their game and a run of 9 winning ends ensured they picked up highest winning rink with a 27-6 win.

Wednesday 21^st August 2019 - BCBL

With just 2 weeks left of the season the Wunders knew that 3 points against their closest rivals Aylesbury Ducklings would give them a 3 point lead at the top of the table, with a game in hand. This was to be a close game for most of the evening with Aylesbury taking the early lead and then the Wunders went ahead and with just a couple of ends to play the scores were level however the Wunders had a great finish and won 26-16. After their slow start to the season the Cruisers are also on a decent run of form now and picked up their 4^th straight win, 14-12, away at Risboro A. In division 3 the Hotshots were looking to maintain their 100% record, having secured the league title the previous week. This was to be a comfortable win for the Hotshots, losing just 6 ends and 6 shots, in their 27-6 win. Only Waddesdon Longbows stand in their way of completing an unbeaten season. Also looking for an unbeaten season the Nutters were playing the Seekers and they too picked up their 9^th win of the season, 23-8.

Sunday 18^th August 2019 – Hazells v Cheddington – Mixed Friendly – Home – Won – 112 - 57

Following our recent success in the Hanson Challenge trophy against Cheddington we went in to this afternoons game confident that we could record another victory over our friends from Cheddington. Norman Garrett, Anne Farmer & Gerry Moores only won 8 of the 18 ends in their game but they still managed to earn a narrow 16-14 victory. Gary West, Andrew MacKenzie & Jan Moores got off to a great start in their game, going 13-5 ahead after 8 ends and they continued to control their game throughout, picking up a 6 on their way to a 27-12 win. Karen Seegoolam, Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan picked up highest winning rink with a 33-7 win, which started with them picking up a 6 on the first end. Norman Handley, Kishore Seegoolam & Sid Brotherston only lost 4 ends in their game as they won 23-10. Marion Garrett, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell fought back well in their game, coming from 10-4 down to go in to the last end level at 13-13 however they then dropped a single shot to lose 14-13.

Wednesday 14^th August 2019 – BCBL

With Teresa & Judy at Leamington today several of our teams have postponed their BCBL games however the Hotshots were in action against P RisMatics and they won 23-11 for their 8^th consecutive game to win the Division 3 title with 2 games left to play. The Nutters also secured their divisional title courtesy of their 18-6 win away at Wing Wobblers.

Tuesday 13^th August 2019 – Hazells v Wingrave – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won – 86 – 57

This evening we were at Wingrave for what is always a great game, on a testing green. Naomi Hooper, Tony Brindley & Eddie Chanell were involved in a close game and although they went behind early on they soon got back level and from there they never went behind again in the game and went on to win 12 – 10. Laura Oliver, Denzil Ashcroft & Paul Rogers enjoyed a comfortable win, losing just 5 ends on their way to a 19-5 win. Sid Brotherston, Judy Rogers & Ann Richardson were leading their game throughout until the 16^th end when they dropped a 4, followed by a 3 on the next end to go 15-12 down and they only managed to pick up 2 on the last end and lost 15-14. Roy Richardson, Kim Challinor & Mark Newman picked up highest winning rink courtesy of their 25-8 win, which included a 6 on the last end. Leila Brindley, Ann Ramsay & David Logan were also involved in a close game and were 13-12 ahead after 14 ends however they then dropped 6 shots over the next 3 ends and despite picking up 2 on the last end they lost 18-15.

Sunday 11^th August 2019 – Men’s Club Triples Semi Finals

This morning we played the 2 semi finals of the Men’s Triples and Gerry Moores, Keith Harper & mark Newman got off to a great start against Norman Bonham, Rob Stanbury & Andy Watkins, going 6-0 ahead after 4 ends however unfortunately it went rapidly downhill after that with them winning just 2 more ends in a game they lost 18-8. Well done to Norman, Rob & Andy on a great win and for reaching the finals. In the other game Alan King, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick were 6-6 with Sid Brotherston, Tony Brindley & David Logan after 6 ends. David’s triple then edged ahead, 13-9 after 11 ends before droping 5 shots over the next 2 ends. David’s triple then picked up 8 shots from the next 3 ends to take what was expected to be an unassailable 21-14 lead with 2 ends to play. Alan, Ian & Roger then picked up a 2 and need 5 from the last end to force the extra end. With 2 bowls left each Rogers triple were holding 5 before David drew in for shot, Roger then took out the shot bowl meaning David had to once again get a bowl in the head to progress to the final however he couldn’t quite find the gap through and the game went to an extra end with the scores level at 21-21. Alan King drew 2 woods on to the jack and with just 1 bowl left each David fired his last wood and took out both shot and 2^nd wood and sent the jack across the rink. With the shot now looking like being decided by a measure Roger needed to either edge Ian’s bowl in or draw in for shot and he managed to pick up the shot to take them through to the final

Friday 9^th August 2019 – Hazells v Cheddington – Away – Hanson Challenge Shield 2^nd Leg – Won 117 - 81

This evening we took a 26 shot lead to Cheddington for the return leg of the Hanson Challenge Shield. It was also great to have the competitions sponsor, Paul Hanson, attend the game and present the trophy after the game and we pass on our thanks to him for his support. Leila Brindley, Josh Henly, Daniel Watkins and Keith Harper got in to the lead after 4 ends and they then only lost 3 further ends during the game and they picked up a 6 themselves on their way to a highest winning rink score of 27-9. Naomi Hooper, Ian Ramsay, Rob Stanbury & Paul Rogers got off to a great start going 9-0 ahead after just 4 ends however by the 12^th end they were actually 12-11 down. They then picked up a 4 to get back ahead but dropped 3 shots over the last 2 ends to lose 18-16. Sue Watkins, Kim Challinor, Carol Crick & Andy Watkins were 8-0 ahead after 4 ends and by the 14^th end were absolutely cruising, 21-4, however they then dropped 9 shots from the next 3 ends to re-ignite the concentration and they won 22-14. Sid Brotherston, Judy Rogers, Pete Coyne & Steve McNeill picked up a 5 on the 1^st end and they remained in front throughout the game, winning 16-13. Joan Sweetman, June Redding, Inger McNeill & Roger Crick only lost 2 of the first 13 ends to take a 17-3 lead however the hosts then started to get back in to the game but we held on for a 22-15 win. Barbara Ramsay, Tony Brindley, Matthew Crick & Eddie Chanell found themselves 8-2 down after 7 ends however they were level at 8-8 3 ends later and they went on to win 14-12. Tonight’s result gave us an aggregate win of 222 to 160 to get our name on the trophy in its inaugural season

Wednesday 7^th August 2019 – BCBL

This evening we had just 3 of our teams in action, with the other 2 postponing their games in order to go to Leamington to support Teresa. All 3 teams picked up important wins with the Wunders getting a comfortable 25 -9 win at home to Risboro A, which moves them 3 points clear of Aylesbury Ducklings. In Division 3 the Hotshots were at Cheddington against the Demons, who had only lost 1 previous game and were the Hotshots closest rivals. However the Hotshots maintained their 100% record with a 20 – 13 win to go 9 points clear, although Cheddington do have a game in hand. In Division 4 the Nutters also kept their 100% record going with a 27 – 12 win at home to Aylesbury Drakes. This result takes them 11 points clear of the Seekers, who also have a game in hand

Tuesday 6^th August 2019 – Hazells v Tring – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won – 88 – 62

This evening we arrived at Tring in the pouring rain however, thankfully, the rain stopped about 15 mins before we were due to start and it held off throughout the game. Geoff Knott, Carol Crick & Paul Rogers were involved in a close game, on a challenging rink, and the socres were level at 5-5 after 6 ends and 11-11 after 14 ends however it was the hosts that had the stronger finish, winning 17-13. Judy Rogers, Matthew Crick & Andy Watkins were also involved in a close game and were 3 shots ahead with 3 ends to go. They then dropped 2 shots on each of the next 2 ends but were able to pick up the shot on the last end to force a 12-12 draw. Paul Warner, Daniel Watkins & Steve McNeill were 15-8 ahead after 13 ends however they then lost 4 of the last 5 ends but held on for a 16-14 win. Laura Oliver, Denzil Ashcroft & Inger McNeill had a tough evening, winning just 6 ends, during their 21-12 defeat. Highest winning rink of the evening went to Sue Watkins, Kim Challinor & Roger Crick courtesy of their 24-4 win.

Monday 5^th August 2019 – Colchester Memorial Trophy

This evening we played the qualifying round of the Colchester Memorial Trophy which is a fixed jack pairs competition. Unfortunately we had 2 people drop out just prior to the game so we had 1 group of 6 pairs and the other group had 2 pairs and 2 triples. Each team played 3 games of 6 ends with points available for the 4 closest woods each end and the winning team from each group would progress to the final which is played over finals weekend.  In the all pairs group Andy Watkins & Josh Henly won all 3 of their games and finished with a total of 115 points, just 6 points ahead of Joan Sweetman & Roger Crick. In the other group Kishore Seegoolam, Kim Challinor & Paul Rogers won all 3 of their games, finishing with 111 points, 16 ahead of 2^nd placed Ellen Livett & David Logan. This was a fun evening and congratulations to the 2 winning teams.

Sunday 4^th August 2019 – Hazells v Wing – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won – 88 – 62

This afternoon we made the trip to Wing with 5 triples for what is usually a challenging game. Norman Bonham, Tony Brindley & Gerry Moores got a hold of their game early on going 7-1 ahead after 6 ends, however they then had a scare when they dropped a 6 on the 8^th end but they soon put that behind them and only lost 2 more ends in the match, winning 19-11. Maureen Warwick, Denzil Ashcroft & Steve McNeill had a tough afternoon and were 13-2 down after just 6 ends and it didn’t improve much throughout the game and they lost 22-10. Rod Bacon, Sid Brotherston & Pete Coyne picked up a 5 on the 6^th end to go 8-2 ahead and from there they controlled the game, only losing 6 ends during the game and they went on to win 20-9. Norman Handley, Inger McNeill & Keith Harper were 7-6 ahead after 10 ends however they then picked up 6 shots from the next 2 ends and a 4 on the last end to win 18-12. This afternoon we welcomed Buckingham West End and we relooking to continue on from this morning’s success. Anne Farmer, Daniel Watkins & David Logan led throughout their game and were 14-6 ahead after 13 ends however they then dropped 11 shots over the next 4 ends and ended up losing 17-15. June Redding, Kim Challinor & Paul Rogers were 7-1 ahead after 4 ends and despite losing 7 ends during the game they still won 21-13. Ellen Livett, Sid Brotherston & Steve McNeill took the early lead in their game and then picked up 2 4’s on the 10^th & 11^th end to go 18-8 ahead and although they picked up another shot on the next end they lost the last 6 ends but held on for a 19-18 win. Mark Newman, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick were always ahead in their game although it was a close match and they won 18-15. Sheila Lawlor, Judy Rogers & Carol Crick went 6-0 ahead after 4 ends and by the 14^th end were 18-8 ahead however they too were run close at the end but held on for a 19-16 win. Kath Cowan, Denzil Ashcroft & Andy Watkins had a comfortable win on the tricky rink 6, winning 11 ends on their way to an 18-9 win.

Saturday 3^rd July 2019 – Hazells v Waddesdon – Mid Bucks Knockout Cup – Won 3-2

This morning we went to Waddesdon confident that we could continue our good run of form following our win over Bletchley Town in the previous round. In the Two Wood Daniel Watkins got us off to a great start with a comfortable 15-7 win against Kevin Higgins. In the singles Keith Harper got off to a slow start and was soon 13-3 behind however he then started to get back in to the game and got back to 15-14 behind before unfortunately losing 21-16 to level the match at 1 – 1. In the triples Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill and Paul Rogers led from the start in their game and put us 2-1 ahead with a 19-15 win. The next game to finish was the fours with Denzil Ashcroft, Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Andy Watkins who lost the first 6 ends to go 12-0 behind and from there they struggled to get back in to the game and lost 32-14 to level the scores again at 2-2. The final game to finish was the pairs which saw Roger Crick and Mark Newman play out a tight game throughout and after 16 ends the scores were level at 13-13. We then picked up 5 shots from the next 3 ends and despite dropping a shot on the 20^th end we went in to the last end knowing that 4^th wood would be enough to get the win and we actually just dropped a 2 to win 18-16 to give us the 3-2 win and another victory over Waddesdon this season. The Semi Final will be at home on Friday 23^rd August at home to Gerrards Cross so get the date in your diaries as we will need all the support we can get in what should be a great game

Friday 2^nd August 2019 – Hazells v Wendover – Adams Cup – Home – Won – 141 - 87

This evening we took a 20 shot lead in to the 2^nd leg of this years Adams Cup and confidence was high that we could finally regain the trophy that had been in Wendover’s hands for too long. Naomi Hooper, Sid Brotherston, June Redding & Keith Harper led their game throughout and after 15 ends they were 14-10 ahead however they then picked up a 7 before going on to win 23-15. Teresa Newman, Andrew MacKenzie, Josh Henly & Brian Abigail started off playing a close game however we then picked up a 4 to edge ahead and 5 ends later they picked up 12 shots from 4 ends and went on to win 26-11. Paul Warner, Carol Crick, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers were up against it in their game and the only won 2 of the first 14 ends and were 18-7 down however they then started to get back in to the game, all be it a little late but managed to close the gap, losing 21-19. Alan King, Judy Rogers, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick got off to a great start and were 10-1 ahead after 8 ends and despite losing the next 3 ends they went on to win 19-13. Leila Brindley, Denzil Ashcroft, Inger McNeill & mark Newman dominated their game from the start picking up 17 shots from 5 ends and although they then dropped 10 shots from 4 ends they went on to win 29-17. Barbara Ramsay, Denise Boult, Tony Brindley & David Logan took an early lead however by the 13^th end they were just a single shot ahead however they then went on to win the last 8 ends to win 25-10. This evenings result meant that we could finally regain the Adams Cup with an overall 259 – 185 aggregate win.

Saturday 27^th July 2019 – Hazells v Leighton Buzzard – Mixed Friendly – Away – Lost – 69 – 63

This afternoon’s game was reduce to 4 triples, from 5, by Leighton Buzzard and this missing rink made the difference in the match as we lost by 6 shots and I am certain that had we had the 5^th triple we could have won the game. Teresa Newman, Andrew MacKenzie & Denzil Ashcroft struggled to come to terms with the green this afternoon and were 8-2 down after 5 ends and from there they just couldn’t get back on level terms and went on to lose 21-11. Carol Crick, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick got off to a great start picking up a 5 on the 1^st end and from there they only lost 5 ends, although 1 of those was with a 5. They went on to win 23-9. Leila Brindley, Dave Wheeler & Mark Newman got off to a disappointing start losing the first 6 ends to go 12-0 down and from there they were fighting to get back in to the game but ended up losing 19-11. Barbara Ramsay, Tony Brindley & David Logan also started slowly and were 7-0 down after 3 ends and by the 11^th end they were 15-6 behind however they then fought back well to get the scores level at 15-15 but were unable to push ahead and ended up losing 19-17.

Friday 26^th July 2019 – Hazells v Cheddington – Hanson Challenge Trophy – Home – Won – 105 - 79

Following the popularity of the Adams Cup and the great relationship we have with Cheddington Bowls Club it was agreed to create a new competition between the 2 clubs. Thanks to Paul Rogers for obtaining sponsorship from his company, Hanson Bodyshop in High Wycombe. With both clubs having great support in terms of members wanting to play we ended up with 6 rinks. Barbara Ramsay, Tony Brindley, Rob Stanbury & Brian Abigail got off to a great start going 5-0 ahead after 2 ends and from here they held on to their lead throughout, although they did drop 8 shots over the last 5 ends but held on for a 17-14 win. Leila Brindley, Ian Ramsay, Inger McNeill & Mark Newman also started well going 6-0 ahead after 3 ends and they won 8 of the 1^st 11 ends to go 13-6 ahead but Cheddington then started to get back in to the game but again we held on for an 18-16 win. Teresa Newman, Josh Henly, Keith Harper & Steve McNeill were involved in a very tight game through 11 ends and we were just 7-6 ahead however we put in a great finish to pick up highest winning rink with an 18-7 win. Sid Bortherston, Naomi Hooper, David Logan & Roger Crick controlled their game throughout and only lost 7 ends on their way to a 19-11 win. Sue Watkins, Carol Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers were involved in a game of 2 halves as they were 8-6 down after 9 ends but they then took control of the game and went on to win 17-14. Andrew MacKenzie, Alan King, Judy Rogers & Eddie Chanell were involved in a very close game throughout and the usual rink 6 issues played their part in the game. The scores were level at 7-7, then 10-10 and 14-14 after 16 ends however we managed to ensure 6 winning rinks with a 16-15 win. We now take a 26 shot advantage to the away game in a couple of weeks. 

Wednesday 24^th July 2019 – BCBL

After a week off all our teams were back in action this evening and the break had obviously done us good as all 5 teams picked up a win tonight. In Division 1 the Wunders got back to winning ways with a 14 – 9 win at home to Cheddington Bees whilst in the same division the Cruisers got a much needed win away to Aston Clinton Diamonds, 21-7. In division3 the Hotshots maintained their 100% record with a 20-11 win away at Waddesdon Longbows. Also maintaining their 100% record were the Nutters in division 4 with a 20-10 win at Wendover Warriors. Completing the clean sweep of wins this evening were the Seekers who picked up a 29-15 win at home to Aylesbury Drakes.

Sunday 21^st July 2019 – Hazells v Long Crendon – Mixed Friendly – Home – Lost 98 - 61

Although we had members away at the ladies unbadged singles and a gala day we were still able to fulfill our fixture at home to Long Crendon. With so many members unavailable this was going to prove a tough match however Norman Handley, Joan Sweetman & Denise Boult put up a great fight in their game, losing by just 1 shot 15-14. Bob Worth, Roy Richardson & Jan Moores got off to a great start in their game, going 6-1 ahead after 6 ends however they only managed to pick up 1 more shot in the match as they lost 27-7. Marion Garrett, Norman Bonham & Gerry Moores started the game well however a run of 6 ends, dropping 15 shots gave the advantage to their opponents, who went on to win 22-16. Sheila Holland, Maureen Warwick & Tom Holland had an afternoon to forget as they won just 5 ends during the game and ended up losing 24-6. Despite going 5-1 down after 5 ends Norman Garrett, Geoff Knott & Alan King found themselves 10-8 ahead 5 ends later and they managed to hold on for an 18-10 win.

Saturday 20^th July 2019 – Hazells v BBA Ladies – Lost 117 - 91

This afternoon it was the men’s turn to look after our ladies as the county sent a ladies representative team to Hazells to play our ladies in a game to celebrate Anne’s County Presidency. With several of our ladies playing their first game for the club this was going to give them some great experience of match play. Marion Garrett, Gill Errington, Karen Seegoolam & Ann Richardson had a tough afternoon and although they were 6-5 ahead after 7 ends they then dropped 10 shots over the next 4 ends and only won 3 more ends in the game, losing 26-10. Kath Cowan, Steph Rose, June Redding & Inger McNeill struggled to get in to their game and only won 6 ends, losing 24-7. Maureen Warwick, Sheila Lawlor, Joan Sweetman & Carol Crick got off to a great start going 9-2 ahead after 5 ends and they continued to control their game and were 14-4 ahead after 10 ends. However the wheels then started to fall off as we only won 1 more end in the game, eventually losing 18-15. Leila Brindley, Margaret Oliffe, Barbara Ramsay & Denise Boult produced 1 of only 2 winning rinks for Hazells, losing just 5 ends during their 22-14 win. Ellen Livett, Ann Ramsay, Laura Oliver & Jan Moores were 10-7 ahead after 11 ends however the visitors had the better of the 2^nd half of the game and they went on to win 19-12. Michelle Higgs, Zoe Watkins, Teresa Newman & Judy Rogers earnt our highest winning rink with a 25-16 win, which included picking up a 5 & a 6. The game was followed by a fantastic meal thanks to Kishore & Tom. Thanks also to all those that gave up their time to give Anne and our ladies a great afternoon.

Sunday 14^th July 2019 – Aussie Pairs

This afternoon we held the popular Aussie Pairs competition with cash prizes up for grabs and with 12 teams split in 2 groups there were some great games on offer. With 1 point for each end won and 3 points for each game won and the top 2 teams in each group progressing to the final/3^rd place play off Group A was won by Brian Abigail & Sid Brotherston who won all 3 of their games, winning 15 of the 21 ends played. Runners up in this group were Carol & Roger Crick who also won all 3 games but only managed to win 12 ends. Group B was won by Kim Challinor & Daniel Watkins who won all 3 games and 10 ends and runners up were Karen Seegoolam & David Logan who only won 2 games but won 13 ends. So the 3^rd place play off between Carol & Roger and Karen & David saw Carol and Roger win 13-0 after 4 ends. The final was contested by Sid & Brian and Kim & Daniel and when Kim & Daniel picked up a 6 on the 4^th end it just about wrapped up the game and they won 7-3.

Saturday 13^th July 2019 – Hazells v Aston Clinton – Mixed Friendly – Home – Won 89 - 49

This afternoon we welcomed Aston Clinton for a 4 rinks friendly. Sheila Lawlor, Norman Garrett, Andrew MacKenzie and Jan Moores got off to a slow start going 7-1 down after 6 ends however we then won the next 6 ends and went on to win 25-13. Dave Wheeler, Sheila Holland, June Redding & Eddie Chanell got off to a great start going 9-1 ahead after 6 ends and they controlled this game throughout, losing just 6 ends on their way to a highest winning rink score of 27-10. Joan Sweetman, Kishore Seegoolam, Karen Seegoolam & Keith Harper only won 4 of the first 10 ends however that was still enough to see them lead 8-6 and when they lost ends later in the game they were only dropping 1’s and they managed to win 18-13. Marion Garrett, Tom Holland, Ellen Livett & Ian Ramsay completed the clean sweep of the rinks with a comfortable 19-13 win.

Wednesday 10^th July 2019 – BCBL – Week 4

In Division 2 the Wunders suffered their first defeat of the season at Aylesbury Ducklings as they were on the wrong side of a 23 – 12 scoreline. Also in Division 2 the Cruisers had another disappointing night at home to Risboro A as they lost 18 – 13. In Division 3 the Hotshots made it 4 from 4 with a comfortable 21 -9 win away to Cheddington Chancers. In Division 4 we saw another All Hazells match with the Nutters taking on the Seekers and it was the Nutters that got their 4^th win with a 23 – 11. Sunday 7^th July 2019 – Hazells v Gerrards Cross – Mens Top Club – Lost 4 -1

This evening we welcomed Gerrards Cross for the 4^th round of the Top Club and this was a fantastic game played in front of a large number of supporters from each club. Alan King continued to take responsibility for the Two Wood competition and he got off to the best possible start winning the first 5 ends to go 8-0 ahead against Dave Simpson. Although Dave managed to get back in to the game, Alan never gave up the lead and went on to win 18-11 after 19 ends to give us our first point. Keith Harper found himself up against John McGuiness and this was to be an amazing game. Keith picked up 2 shots from the first end to get rid of any nerves he may have had about playing an international bowler. Although Keith was 7-3 down after 6 ends he then went on to win the next 5 ends to take an 8-7 lead and this continued to be a close match, although John started to extend his lead and by the 23^rd end he was 18-12 ahead. Keith showed great determination in the game and he managed to get the score back to 18-17 and was holding shot on the next end before unfortunately chipping the jack back to John to go 20-17 down. On the next end John put his first bowl close to the jack and Keith was unable to move it and lost 21-17. In the pairs Andrew MacKenzie & Eddie Chanell were up against David Ross & Kirk Smith and the first half of the game was very tight and the scores were level at 8-8 after 10 ends however the visitors then started to put the pressure on and on the 14^th end we dropped a 6 to go 20-10 down and from there it was going to be very difficult to get back in to the game and we lost 24-14. In the triples Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Mark Newman were up against Matt Hyde, George Reid & Andy Briden and with both teams playing some great bowls it was the visitors that just managed to secure the point to give them the 3-1 lead and the match. In the fours Norman Handley, Tom Holland, Brian Abigail & George Murdoch once again proved that age was no barrier to playing some great bowls as they also took on a Middleton Cup filled team of Neil Farnish, Michael Gomme, Tom McGuiness and Alan Price. There was some great banter during this game with George & Alan trading “comments” at regular intervals and this was an entertaining game to watch and despite losing the team gave a great account of themselves and caused their opposition problems throughout the game.  Despite losing the match 4-1 Gerrards Cross went away knowing they had been in a great match and passed on many compliments about our club, atmosphere the supporters created and the green so well done everyone on such a great night for the club.

Saturday 6^th July 2019 – Club Mixed Triples Semi Finals  

This afternoon we played the 2 Mixed Triples Semi-Finals. June Redding, Tony Brindley & Paul Rogers got off to a great start picking up a 6 on the 4^th end and by the 6^th end they were 12-1 ahead against Dave Wheeler, Kim Challinor & Steve McNeill. This was to be too big a deficit to come back from and Paul’s triple went on to win 22-4 after 15 ends. In the other match Joan Sweetman, Sid Brotherston & David Logan were up against Teresa Newman, Gerry Moores & Pete Coyne and although this game was closer it was Pete’s triple that won through to the final with a 22-13 win.

Wednesday 3^rd July 2019 – BCBL – Week 3

In Division 2 the Wunders kept up their 100% winning start to the season however this was at the expense of the Cruisers. The Wunders went 21-0 ahead after 10 ends with Denzil Ashcroft, Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers having the best of the game against Jack Pipe, Teresa Newman, Kim Challinor & Mark Newman however once the Cruisers managed to win their first end they fought back well and had this gone to 21 ends it would have been a very close scoreline however the Wunders won 22-15. In Division 3 the Hotshots, Ellen Livett, Sheila Lawlor, Rob Stanbury & Pete Coyne, also kept up their 100% record with an 18 – 12 win at home to P Ris Matics. In Division 4 the Nutters, Alan King, Sid Brotherston, June Redding & Norman Handley  also kept up their 100% record at home to Wing Wobblers with a 23 – 12 win and the Seekers, Gerry Moores, Andrew MacKenzie, Kishore Seegoolam & Paul Warner won 18 – 10.

Monday 1^st July 2019 – Mid Bucks Knockout Cup – Hazells v Bletchley Town – Won 3 – 2

We started this years campaign of trying to regain the Mid Bucks Knockout Cup at home to Bletchley Town. With a strong team filled with Middleton Cup & Home Counties League players this was going to be a very tough 1^st round match. In the 2 Wood competition Alan King was up against Alex Squires. Having been successful in Top Club in this format Alan went in to the game confident that he could repeat his success however this was to be a much tougher match and he lost 15 - 8. Also retaining his place in the singles was Keith Harper and he was playing Nathan Nimmo. This was another tough match for Keith and despite playing some great bowls he was unable to continue his run of singles wins, losing 21 - 10. So we were 2-0 down and knew that we then had to win the other 3 disciplines to progress through to the next round. In the pairs Ashley Dean & Mark Newman got off to a great start picking up 11 shots from the 1^st 4 ends however by the 10^th end the scores were level at 13 – 13. We then picked up 6 shots from the next 2 ends and then conceded 6 again over the next 3 and this continued to be a close match but we managed to get ahead and see out the game, winning 24 - 21. In the triples Roger Crick, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers made a slow start on a challenging rink and were 12 – 5 down after 6 ends however we then started to get back in to the game and on the 11^th end we picked up a 6 to go 15 – 13 ahead. 2 ends later we made use of the Hazells glide as we were 1 down but Paul managed to get his last wood in and pick up the jack to pick up 5 ourselves to go 20 – 14 ahead and from there it was just a matter of game management to see out the game 25 – 15 winners. In the Fours Denzil Ashcroft, Pete Coyne, Eddie Chanell & George Murdoch got off to a great start going 12 – 0 ahead after 5 ends and although they did drop a 6 on the 10^th end they picked up another 8 shots from the next 3 ends and from there they cruised to a 28-19 win to give us the 3-2 win and a place in the next round away to Waddesdon

Sunday 30^th June 2019 – Hazells v Chesham – National Mens Two Foors - Away – Won 43 - 27

Our Two Fours team were at Chesham this morning having already won some great matches in the competition and this was to be another successful match. Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper, David Logan & Mark Newman dominated their game throughout and had a run of winning 6 ends in row on their way to a 26-12 win.  Alan King, Denzil Ashcroft, George Murdoch & Ashley Dean picked up 5 shots from the first 2 ends and retained the lead until the 18^th end when they went 15-14 down. We then picked up 3 shots from the next 2 ends to give ourselves an overall win which meant we didn’t need to play the final end. We will now be playing Bletchley Town away in the next round which is being played on Wednesday 10^th July at 6pm.

Sunday 30^th June 2019 – Hazells v Berkhamsted – Mixed Friendly – Home – Won 118 - 50

This afternoons home game against Berkhamsted turned in to a rather 1 sided affair with Rob Stanbury, Kim Challinor & Steve McNeill picking up highest winning rink courtesy of their 31 – 9 win, which included a 5 on the 6^th end followed by a 7 the next end. Bob Worth, Alan King & Pete Coyne were challenging for the highest winning rink and although they didn’t pick up any 7’s they won 14 ends and missed out on highest winning rink by 1 shot as they won 26 – 5. Norman Handley, June Redding & Paul Rogers only picked up 1 shot from the first 8 ends however in the 2^nd half of their game they picked up 2 6’s on their way to a 22 – 14 win. Sid Brotherston, Judy Rogers & Inger McNeill were 10 – 10 after 12 ends however they then picked up a 5 and went on to win 23-11. Geoff Knott, Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan were ahead for most of the game and although this was a closer game they played well and made it 5 winning rinks courtesy of their 16 – 11 win.

Saturday 29^th June 2019 – Hazells v Potten End – Mixed Friendly – Home – Lost 55 - 67

This afternoons game was played in extreme heat and it was agreed that the game would be reduced to 14 ends, which worked in Potten Ends favour as they seemed to cope with the heat better than us. Marion Garrett, Andrew MacKenzie were our only winning rink with a 14 – 9 win. Barbara Ramsay, Roy Richardson & Tony Brindley were 9 – 3 ahead after 7 ends however they only won 1 more end to lose 14 – 11. Norman Garrett, June Redding & Carol Crick were 10 -2 down after 9 ends and Carol & June decided to come off the green due to the heat and were replaced by Roger & Matthew Crick, with Steve McNeill also coming in to the game to substitute for 1 of the Potten Ends players who was also struggling in the heat. We managed to win the last 5 ends to earn a 10 – 10 draw. Bob Worth, Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan only won 5 ends in their game and lost 15 – 9. Anne Farmer, Ellen Livett & Ian Ramsay took the early lead however they dropped 4 ends in a row to go 7 – 4 down and despite picking up 4 shots from the next 2 ends they dropped 12 from the next 4 and lost 19 -11.

Friday 28^th June 2019 – Adams Cup – Hazells v Wendover – Away – Won – 118 – 98

This evening we were at Wendover in the 1st leg of this years Adams Cup and we were looking to regain the cup we lost last year. Barbara Ramsay, Denise Boult, Tony Brindley & David Logan got off to a bad start going 9 – 0 down after 5 ends and it didn’t improve much over the next 5 ends as we were 12-3 down. The hosts continued to control the game however David’s rink were keen to reduce the deficit as far as possible to improve the overall score situation and they managed to pick up 9 shots from the last 3 ends to lose 20-17. Leila Brindley, Denzil Ashcroft, Ann Richardson & Inger McNeill started slowly in their game and they were 9-6 down when we stopped for tea however that seemed to be just the tonic they needed as they 8 of the last 10 ends to win the match 18-11. Paul Warner, Carol Crick, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers controlled their game throughout picking up 6 3’s during the game and they ended up winning 24-16. Roy Richardson, June Redding, Josh Henly & Brian Abigail struggled to come to terms with their green and by the time they stopped for tea were 11-6 down. Unfortunately this didn’t bring about a change of fortunes as they went on to lose 22-14. Matthew Crick, Judy Rogers, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick went 9-1 ahead after 6 ends and by the time they stopped for tea were 14-4 ahead however despite picking up a 5 soon after the break they then struggled to pick up shots although they were able to hold on for a 23-18 win. Naomi Hooper, Andrew MacKenzie, Sid Brotherston & Keith Harper were 9-3 ahead after 9 ends however they then dropped 7 shots over the next 4 ends. This was just a minor blip as we went on to win 7 of the last 8 ends to take a 22-11 win. We now head in to the home leg in a couple of weeks with a 20 shot advantage.

Wednesday 26^th June 2019 – BCBL – Week 2

This was another good week for all the Hazells teams this week, although the Cruisers game against Cheddington was postponed. In Division 2 the Wunders had a comfortable win at Princes Risborough 22 – 7. In Division 3 the Hotshots came from 8-2 down to win 21 – 15 at home to Cheddington Demons. In Division 4 the Seekers dropped 2 5’s and a four in their game, however they only dropped 2 more shots and managed to earn a hard fought 16 – 16 draw. The Nutters were at Aylesbury Town and they had another convincing win, 20 – 8.

Sunday 23^rd June 2019 – Hazells v Wolverton – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won 79 - 64

Following yesterday’s success we were looking to pick up 2 wins from the weekend with another away game, this time at Wolverton. Stand in skip Judy Rogers, with Kath Cowan & Sid Brotherston, got off to a great start going 8-0 ahead after 4 ends and despite dropping a 5 they dominated their game throughout and won 25-16. Paul Rogers, not wanting to lose out on highest winning rink to Judy, picked up a 4 on the last end in his game with Maureen Warwick & Norman Bonham to win 26-14. President Anne was making her first appearance of the season following injury and she made it a winning return with Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan courtesy of their narrow 15-14 win. Our only losing rink of the afternoon came from Joan Sweetman, June Redding & Rod Bacon who were 5-0 down after 4 ends and despite them fighting back well to take a 13-8 lead after 14 ends they then lost the last 4 ends, dropping 12 shots in the process to lose 20-13

Saturday 22^nd June 2019 – Hazells v Bradwell – Mixed Friendly – Away – Won 103 - 65

This afternoon we travelled to Bradwell with 5 triples and despite winning 3 rinks to 2 the overall score would have suggested a more convincing win in terms of rinks. Probably our highest winning rink of the season came from Marion Garrett, Daniel Watkins & Keith Harper who picked up a 7 on the 2^nd end and despite then losing the next 2 ends they went on to win the remaining 14 ends, picking up a 6 and 2 5’s to finish 42-3 winners. Kath Cowan, Ian Ramsay & Eddie Chanell dropped 6 shots from the 1^st 2 ends but then started to get to grips with the green and by the 9^th end were 9-7 ahead and from there they went on to win 19-11. Sue Watkins, Sheila Lawlor & David Logan were 9-1 ahead after 6 ends and despite the home side fighting back we held on for a 16-10 win. Barbara Ramsay, Ann Ramsay & Andy Watkins dropped 7 shots from the first 3 ends and although they picked up 5 from the next 2 they were just never able to get back on level terms and went on to lose 21-13. Norman Garrett, Kim Challinor & Pete Coyne were 9-0 down after 5 ends however they fought back well and were just 12-10 down after 12 ends. Unfortunately they then dropped a 5 and finished off losing 20-13.

Wednesday 19^th June 2019 – BCBL – Week 1

This evening we started this season’s league games with all 5 teams in action, 4 of which got off to a winning start. In Division 2 the Wunders were at home to Aston Clinton Diamonds and won 25-13. Also in Div 2 the Cruisers were at Aylesbury Ducklings and they suffered a narrow defeat, 15-13. Following their promotion the Hotshots started their season with a comfortable 25-15 win at Wendover Wanderers. In Div 4 the Seekers were at Wendover Warriors and they too had a comfortable win, 25-8 whilst the Nutters were at home to Wing Wanderers and they won 23-9.

Monday 17^th June –  Hazells v Cheddington – Top Club – Won 5 -0

Following their success in the previous round against Waddesdon we were looking to avenge the defat of our other Hazells Top Club at Cheddington by winning the home match against Cheddington. Alan King got us off to a great start in the 2 Wood against Steve Molnar as he took a 10-2 lead after 10 ends and went on to win 17-5. In the singles Keith Harper had a hard fought match against Dai Malatynski and this was a fantastic match with Keith putting on the pressure from the start, taking a 9-1 lead and although Dai fought his way back in to the match and actually took a 16-14 lead Keith didn’t give up and the scores were 20-20 to set up a nail biting last end. Keith played an almost perfect bowl to sit on the jack and his opponent couldn’t get it off, giving Keith the 21-20 win to give us a 2-0 lead. In the pairs Ashley Dean & Eddie Chanell got off to a bad start and were 16-9 down after 10 ends however they then 5 shots over the next 2 ends to close the gap and by the 17^th end they were 22-18 ahead and they held on for a 24-21 win and the 3^rd point to ensure qualification for the next round. Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Mark Newman were 13-0 ahead after 4 ends in the triples and continued to dominate the game throughout and although the visitors got back within 4 shots we then finished by picking up 9 shots from the last 4 ends to win 28-15. In the rinks Norman Handley, Tom Holland, Brian Abigail & George Murdoch were 12-4 ahead after 4 ends and despite losing the next 5 ends we never went behind in the game and went on to secure a 5-0 win courtesy of their 23-20 win. We will now be playing either Chesham or Gerrards Cross at home in the next round

Sunday 16^th June 2019 – Hazells v Dunstable – Mixed Friendly – Home – Lost – 98 - 81

After the excitement of the mornings games we welcomed Dunstable for this afternoon’s friendly. This was to be a tough afternoon that we only managed to pick up 1 winning triple from. Joan Sweetman, Geoff Knott & David Logan got off to a terrible start going 11-0 down after 5 ends however they then picked up a 5 and by the 12^th end they were 14-13 ahead and going in to the last end they were 19-17 ahead however they then dropped a 4 to lose 21-19. Bob Worth, Rod Bacon & Paul Rogers went behind early however by the 8^th end they had taken a 10-9 lead and from there they continued to lead and ended up winning 23-15. Norman Handley, Ann Ramsay & Carol Crick were 10-0 down after just 3 ends and so were playing catch up for the rest of the game and despite picking up a 5 still couldn’t get close, losing 23-15. Sheila Lawlor, Norman Garrett & Denzil Ashcroft were 5-5 after 5 ends however it was the visitors that just managed to edge ahead and retained the lead on their way to a 18-14 win. Marion Garrett, Josh Henly & Alan King made the worst possible start by losing the 1^st 9 ends, although they did win 6 of the remaining ends but ended up losing 21-10.

Sunday 16^th June 2019 – Mens National Two Fours – Hazells A v Hazells B

This morning both our 2 Fours Teams were drawn to play each other in the 3^rd round of the competition and this was to be a great game. Despite the fact that everyone wanted to win, but not at the expense of our other team, there were some great bowls being played and a credit to everyone involved in the spirit that the game was played in. Once again there was fantastic support from our members. Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper, David Logan & Mark Newman were playing Sid Brotherston, Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers and it was Mark’s rink that took the early lead and were 12-4 ahead after 12 ends however Paul’s rink were never going to give up and fought back well, knowing that if they could keep the game close then their other 4 could help keep them in the match. Mark’s rink won this game 17-14. Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell, Keith Harper & Andy Watkins took the early lead in their game going 11-7 ahead against Matthew Crick, Ian Ramsay, Pete Coyne & Roger Crick after 10 ends however they then dropped 8 shots in 3 ends to go 15-11 down. After 18 ends they were 18-13 down and the overall match was very close however Andy’s rink then picked up 6 shots from the last 3 ends to earn a 19-18 win and a 4 shot victory for their team. Congratulations boys and good luck at Chesham in the next round on the 30^th June at 10am.

Saturday 15^th June 2019 – Club Mixed Triples

This morning we had 30 members enter this years Mixed Triples competition and so the draw was completed in order for the games to commence at 10am. We had 4 teams that had to play a preliminary round, with the 2 winners playing each other later in the day. The remaining 6 teams played their 1^st round match in the morning and there were some great games being played. In the 1^st game Paul Rogers, June Redding & Tony Brindley were playing Ellen Livett, Karen Seegoolam & Ian Ramsay and it was Pauls rink that went 8-0 ahead after 5 ends and this proved too big a deficit for Ian’s rink to make up and Paul’s rink went on to win 20-8. Ann Ramsay, Denzil Ashcroft & Mark Newman played out a great game against Josh Henly, Brian Abigail & Inger McNeill with most ends close, apart from the 5 that Ann, Denzil & Mark picked up on the 17^th end and it was their triple that went on to win 16-13. These 2 winners then played their 1^st round game in the afternoon and despite Ann, Denzil & Mark taking the early lead it was Paul’s triple that took control of the game on the 10^th end when they went 10-8 ahead and from their they went on to win 20-13. Dave Wheeler, Kim Challinor & Steve McNeill played out a very close game against Norman Bonham, Carol Crick & Keith Harper and they went int o the last end level at 14-14 however it was Steve’s triples that picked up a 3 to progress to the semi finals. Teresa Newman, Matthew Crick & Pete Coyne took the early lead in their game going 7-1 ahead after 5 ends however they then dropped a 6 and were 13-9 down after 10 ends. However this didn’t affect them as they they picked up 8 shots from the next 3 ends and went on to win 26-17. Sheila Lawlor, Barbara Ramsay & Roger Crick had a tough game against Joan Sweetman, Sid Brotherston & David Logan as they only won 4 ends during the game and although they managed to pick up 11 shots from those ends they lost 22-11. The Semi Finals will now be played on the 6^th July at 2pm.

Sunday 9^th June – Hazells v Bletchley St Martins – Friendly – Away – Lost 113 - 122

First of all can I pass on Steve’s thanks to those of you that stepped in to play this game at last minute following confusion over the fixture with Bletchley claiming it was a rinks game, even though we had the fixture as triples. Through your great support we managed to get together 6 rinks for the game and on arrival at the game Bletchley apologized as they found that it should have been a triples game. Marion Garrett, Barbara Ramsay, Keith Harper & Eddie Chanell took the early lead in their game to take a 6 – 1 lead however they only won 4 more ends in the game and lost 16-11. Sheila Lawlor, Norman Garrett, Denzil Ashcroft & Paul Rogers were 9-2 ahead after 7 ends however they then dropped 11 shots over the next 4 ends and had to fight back late on and narrowly lost 22-21. Ann Ramsay, Norman Handley, Matthew Crick & David Logan picked up 2 5’s in the first 5 ends to go 12-1 ahead and by the 12^th end they were 20-3 ahead and despite a late comeback from the home side we held on for a 23-17 win. Sue Watkins, Carol Chanell, Rob Stanbury & Mark Newman had a tough afternoon and despite winning 10 of the ends they were on the wrong side of a 32-13 scoreline. Kath Cowan, Hazel Harper, Sid Brotherston & Andy Watkins were involved in a close game and were 12-10 ahead after 11 ends however they then picked up a 6 to take an 8 shot lead. Unfortunately they only won 1 of the next 8 ends and went in to the last end 23-19 behind but they managed to pick up a 4 on the last end to earn a 23-23 draw. Joan Sweetman, Judy Rogers, Ian Ramsay & Steve McNeill took control of their game from the start and were 14-2 ahead after 11 ends and from there they pushed on to win 22-12. 

Saturday 8^th June – Hazells v Watlington – Friendly – Away – Won 90 - 75

This afternoon we travelled to Watlington and this was a game with some high scoring ends from both teams. Leila Brindley, Ann Richardson & Ashley Dean picked up 2 4’s in their game but also dropped a 5 and ended up on the wrong end of a 19-13 scoreline. Norman Handley, Judy Rogers & Pete Coyne got off to a great start winning the first 7 ends to go 9 -0 ahead however they then lost the next 7 ends, including a 7, to go 20 -9 behind and despite winning the last 4 ends they lost 20-16. Sid Brotherston, Roy Richardson & Daniel Watkins were 9 -6 down after 10 ends however they then picked up a 6 and from there they only lost 1 more end and earnt highest winning rink with a 23-11 win. Rod Bacon, Tony Brindley & Paul Rogers played out a game of 2 halves losing just 1 of the first 10 ends to take a 17-1 lead however they only won 1 of the remaining ends but held on for an 18-13 win. June Redding, Denzil Ashcroft & David Logan managed to get ahead in their game by the 5^th end and never lost the lead again as they won 20-12, including picking up a 5 on the last end.

Sunday 2^nd June – Mens Club Triples

This morning we played the Preliminary round of the triples and with 18 entrants the draw was completed and required 2 games to be played with 2 teams getting a bye to the semi-final. Daniel Watkins, Josh Henly & Eddie Chanell were up against Gerry Moores, Keith Harper & Mark Newman and this was to be a close fought match which saw Eddies rink take the early lead only to lose 6 ends in a row to go 14-6 down however they fought back well to 14-14 with 3 ends to go however it was Gerry, Keith & Mark that picked up 7 shots over the last 3 ends to progress through to the semi-final. In the other game Ian Ramsay, Alan King & Roger Crick were up against Dave Wheeler, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers and although the final score would suggest this was a one-sided game it was far from that with both teams playing well however it was Ian, Alan & Roger that progressed courtesy of their 32-6 win

Saturday 1^st June – Hazells v Stony Stratford – Friendly – Home – Won 106 - 81

This afternoon we welcomed Stony Stratford for a 6 triples friendly looking to repeat the 102 – 79 win we had against the same opposition earlier in the season. Sheila Lawlor, Sid Brotherston & Roger Crick played out a tight game and they were 11-8 ahead after 16 ends however they then dropped 2 2’s to lose 12-11. Sue Watkins, Tony Brindley & Paul Rogers only lost 2 of the 1^st 10 ends to take a 12-4 lead however they only won 1 more end and held on for a 20-16 win. Karen Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & Steve McNeill took an early lead only to be pegged back and they were 12-8 down after 12 ends however they then picked up 10 shots from the next 5 ends and went on to win 18-14. Leila Brindley, Judy Rogers & Andy Watkins only lost 6 ends on their way to a 20-14 win. June Redding, Daniel Watkins & Carol Crick led their game from the start and won 20-17. Norman Handley, Rod Bacon & Brian Abigail picked up highest winning rink courtesy of their 17-8 win.

Thursday 30^th May – Men’s Top Club v Waddesdon – Home – Won 5 - 0

This evening our other Top Club team were in action against a strong Waddesdon side with several Middleton Cup players in action. Alan King took responsibility for the 2 Wood competition and this was a close game however Alan won 5 ends in a row to take a 14-9 lead after 15 ends however he then lost 4 of the next 5 ends to go in to the last end 1 shot ahead, which he won to take the 1^st point for Hazells. Keith Harper was in action in the singles and this was also a close game and the scores were level at 17 – 17 after 21 ends. Keith then picked up 2 shots on the next end before dropping a shot back and when he was holding shot at 19-18 his opponent tried to fire his wood out of the head only to see him take his own wood out, meaning that Keith picked up the 2 shots he needed to earn the 2^nd point.  Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Mark Newman played the triples and went 10-1 ahead after 4 ends however they then dropped 7 shots from the next 2 ends and from here the game remained close with just a couple of shots between them throughout the game and they went in to the last end 18-18 and were able to pick up the shot to give us the overall win. In the pairs Matthew Crick & Ashley Dean were 5-1 ahead after 5 ends however the visitors then fought back to 7-7 after 10 ends. We then went 15-10 behind after 15 ends but managed to get back in front to 17-15 before dropping a 2. After this end and having won the overall match the teams shook hands to see us through to the next round, with a home tie against Cheddington. In the four Norman Handley, Tom Holland, Brian Abigail and George Murdoch controlled their game from the start, winning 21-10 after 17 ends

Ducky Doo Dah Tour

This was another great tour that saw us win all 4 of our games for the first time since the tour started. On Friday we beat Bradwell 134 – 100 on our way to Yarmouth, with Teresa Newman, Naomi Hooper, Judy Rogers & Paul Rogers picking up highest winning rink with a 32-12 win. On the Saturday we started the day with a game of crazy golf which saw Barbara Ramsay win the tournament. We then played at Martham where we won 120 -95 which saw Barbara Ramsay, Leila Brindley, Kim Challinor & Mark Newman pick up highest winning rink with a 25-11 win. Saturday evening saw us take a trip to the dogs although we didn’t see as much success as the bowls however it was an enjoyable night out. On Sunday we played Caister and Teresa Newman, Tony Brindley, Sid Brotherston & Inger McNeill got highest winning rink with their 29-9 win, contributing to our 131-72 win, with no losing rinks. On Monday we made our way home and picked up another comfortable win at Hingham Rectory Bowls Club, 126-95, with Teresa Newman, Matthew Crick, Inger McNeill & Roger Crick picking up highest winning rink with their 31-8 win. Congratulations to Teresa Newman for picking up ladies bowler of the tour with 4 wins from 4 and a shot difference of +73. The Men’s bowler of the tour was a closer contest as Paul Rogers & Matthew Crick both won 4 from 4 and also had same shot difference of +41 however Matthew picked up the award having scored 5 shots more than Paul. Big thanks to Kim for arranging another great tour and to everyone involved for a great weekend. Saturday 25^th May – Hazells v Leighton Buzzard – Friendly – Home – Won 84 - 77

This afternoon, with many of our members on tour, we managed to continue our winning run in the friendlies at home to Leighton Buzzard. Norman Garrett, Dave Wheeler & Gerry Moores started slowly in their game going 9-2 down after 7 ends however they were back level 2 ends later. Unfortunately this just seemed to spur on the visitors who went on to win 21-11. Sue Watkins, Rod Bacon & Denzil Ashcroft were always playing catch up in their game and despite getting level at 9-9 after 11 ends they only picked up another 3 shots, losing 16-12. Steph Rose, Ann Richardson & Brian Abigail only managed to win 6 ends in their game, losing 19-10. Norman Handley, Pete Coyne & Daniel Watkins got off to a disastrous start dropping 9 shots in the first 4 ends and by the 9^th end things hadn’t improved as they were 16-5 down however this was a definite game of 2 halves as they went on to win the last 9 ends to earn a 27-16 win. Marion Garrett, Rob Stanbury & Andy Watkins had a convincing 24-5 win having won the first 9 ends and they only lost 4 ends in the game.

Monday 20^th May – Mens National Two Fours v Aylesbury Town – Won 50 - 38

Following their success against Waddesdon in the previous round 1 of our 2 Fours teams was back in action tonight at Aylesbury Town.  Despite a challenging green Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper, David Logan & Mark Newman took control on their rink from the start and they raced in to a 15-3 lead after 9 ends and despite dropping 8 shots from the next 4 ends we then got those 8 shots back from the next 3 ends and went on to win 28-15. On the other rink Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell, George Murdoch & Andy Watkins had a much closer game however they knew that with the other rink dominating their game that it was important to just ensure they kept the game tight, which they did brilliantly. After 7 ends the scores were level at 7-7 and by the 17^th end the scores were still level at 18-18. Going in to the last end we were trailing by 3 and although we only managed to pick up 2 shots we had won the match and this team will now meet the winners of the game between Newport Pagnall and the Hazells B team, which is being played on 2^nd June. So lets hope for an all Hazells match which would see 1 of our teams progress to the next round.

Sunday 19^th May –  Hazells v Linslade – Friendly – Away – Won 95 - 44

Following the mornings Top Club we travelled to Linslade with several of the mornings players involved in the game. Arriving at the ground we found that their players had thought it was an away game and they had travelled to Hazells. Despite the mix up their players returned to their home ground and we managed to get the game underway just a few mins late. Inger McNeill, Denzil Ashcroft & Steve McNeill took the early lead in their game going 4-1 ahead however by the 9^th end they were 9-4 behind. We then picked up 14 shots from the next 4 ends and managed to hold on for a 19-17 win. Tony Brindley, Daniel Watkins & Roger Crick were looking good for highest winning rink as they won 12 of the first 15 ends however they lost the last 3 ends and finished up winning 25-7. Leila Brindley, Carol Crick & Andy Watkins lost the 1^st 3 ends but then won the next 8 ends to go 13-3 ahead. On the 17^th end they picked up a 6 and finished 22-10 winners. Sid Brotherston, Kim Challinor & David Logan took control of their game early on and by the 13^th end they were 16-5 ahead. They then picked up an 8, with David missing out on a consecutive hotshot against Linslade with 1 of his woods a long way short of the head and from here they were then challenging for highest winning rink and despite  dropping a 4 on the last end they picked up that honour with a 29-10 win.

Sunday 19^th May – Mens Top Club v Cheddington – Lost 3-2

Following our Bucks Cup success against Cheddington last week we went in to this game confident of achieving revenge for last seasons exit at the hands of Cheddington in this years Top Club. With 2 strong teams in the Top Club this season hopes were high however an early defeat in the Two Wood with Gerry Moores struggling to keep in the match with Steve Molnar saw the 1^st point go to Cheddington. Rob Stanbury played the singles and was drawn against Tony Duke and this was a great game which saw the lead switch sides throughout however it was Cheddington that edged the game and gave Cheddington a 2-0 lead. In the pairs Daniel Watkins & Roger Crick had a comfortable win in the pairs and Sid Brotherston, Tony Brindley, Pete Coyne and Paul Rogers won their fours match which left the scores level at 2-2. Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins were holding the lead in the triples when they dropped a 6 on the 16^th end, meaning they were 3 shots down with 2 ends to go. We managed to level the scores after 18 ends and so went in to a play off end. With just 1 wood each to play we were holding shot wood only for their skip to pick up the jack leaving Andy needing to copy his opponent and draw shot. He played a great wood and picked up the jack only to see it edge to a Cheddington bowl and give them the 3-2 win. So focus now turns to our other Top Club team who will be at home to Waddesdon on the 30^th May at Hazells.

Saturday 18^th May – Hazells v Aylesbury Town – Friendly – Home – Won 113 – 65

This afternoon we welcomed our near neighbours from Aylesbury Town for an enjoyable friendly match in some lovely sunshine. George Murdoch, Norman Handley & Tony Brindley made full use of home advantage on rink 1 winning the 1^st 7 ends to go 13-0 ahead and despite dropping a single shot on the next end they then went on to win the last 10 ends, with a final score of 32-1. Norman Garrett, Kishore Seegoolam & Paul Rogers had a much more difficult afternoon and despite winning 8 ends they lost 20-9. Marion Garrett, Josh Henley & Roger Crick picked up an 8 during their game, do NOT ask whose wood didn’t count in missing our on a hotshot, as they went on to win 29-17. Naomi Hooper, Sid Brotherston & Carol Crick always led in their game and they only lost 6 ends in a game that ended up with an 18-14 win for Hazells. Despite only winning 2 of the 1^st 10 ends Ellen Livett, Judy Rogers & Denzil Ashcroft fought back well in their game. Winning 7 ends in a row, including picking up a 7, they went on to win 25-13.

Saturday 11^th May – Hazells v Kitcheners – Frindly – Home – Won 123 – 91

Following our recent defeat at Kitcheners we were looking to bounce back today and get back to winning ways in the lead up to some important games for the club. Team selection proved to be a talking point for the afternoon, however despite talk of stich ups and the like the teams were selected in order to give members some practice in preparation for competitive games that are coming up. Daniel Watkins, Ian Ramsay & Carol Crick had a great start in their game going 13-1 ahead after just 7 ends and they continued to control the game throughout, picking up 8 shots in 2 ends towards the end of the game and they eventually won 25-13. Judy Rogers, Denzil Ashcroft & Inger McNeill also started well, going 8-2 ahead after 5 ends however by the 14^th end they were just 1 shot ahead. An excellent finish saw them win the last 4 ends, picking up 11 shots in the process to win 23-11. So no problems with team selection so far then as Hazells won these 2 rinks ?.  Roger Crick, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers added the 3^rd winning rink to the scoreboard courtesy of their 30-4 win, losing a single shot on 4 ends in their game. So 3 wins to Hazells and still no issues with team selection ?. Norman Handley, Keith Harper & Mark Newman picked up a 5 on the first end and from there they never went behind, although Kitcheners did manage to level the scores at 9-9 after 8 ends however we then went on to win 18-15.  Carol Chanell, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell got off to a slow start and were 12-1 down after 8 ends however they were fighting back well until they dropped 6 shots in 2 ends. A strong finish winning the last 3 ends and picking up 6 shots in the process saw them lose 20-14. Unlike Daniels great performance this afternoon, following his morning victory, his pairs partner Matthew didn’t do much to help his triple with Sue & Andy Watkins. Going 9-1 down after 5 ends and seeing the scores across the green gave them the boost they needs and they managed to pull the game back to 13-13 after 16 ends. Unfortunately they lost the last 2 ends to lose 18-13.  

Monday 6^th May – American Tournament

This year we had a great turnout for the American Tournament, which sees players play 5 games of 5 ends, with their team and playing position decided by a draw before each game. This is a great fun tournament and there was plenty of banter to be heard across the green all afternoon. It is afternoons like these that remind you what a great club we have here and one that we should all be very proud of. It was great to see some of our newer bowlers taking part and really enjoying the afternoon and the support and encouragement given to them by other members was also great to see. With everyone keeping their own score the winner would be the person with the highest shots scored from all bowlers. After 5 great games Carol Crick came 3^rd with 30 shots, 2^nd was Matthew Crick with 37 however the runaway winner was David Logan who scored 44 shots from the 5 games. Well done David and thanks to everyone for making this such a great afternoon once again.

Sunday 5^th May – Hazells v Cheddington – Friendly – Won 126 – 36

Following this mornings great success against Waddesdon we continued the great form this afternoon at Cheddington achieving 1 of our best match scores in some time, winning by 90 shots!!! Ellen Livett, Jan Moores & Pete Coyne were involved in a close game until the 15^th end when we managed to pick up a 5 to go 15-9 ahead and they went on to win 17-10. Naomi Hooper, Josh Henley & Steve McNeill were 18-2 ahead after 10 ends and although they then lost the next 3 ends they went on to win 27-7. Geoff Knott, June Redding & Kim Challinor were 11-1 ahead after 7 ends and they didn’t take their foot off the gas as they went on to pick up 17 shots from the last 6 ends to win 31-6. Laura Oliver, Norman Handley & Paul Rogers lost the first 3 ends however they then started to come to terms with the green and were ahead themselves just 3 ends later and they only lost a further 3 ends in the match, going on to win 21-8. Judy Rogers, Sid Brotherston & Ian Ramsay lost just 4 ends in their game and had it not been for dropping a shot on the last end they could have taken highest winning rink on their own, however they had to share that honour as they also won by 25 shots, 30-5.

Sunday 5^th May – Hazells v Waddesdon – National 2 Fours – Won 46 -22

This morning the Mens Two Fours A team got their campaign underway at home to local rivals Waddesdon. Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper, David Logan & Mark Newman got off to the perfect start in their game going 11-0 ahead after 5 ends. This rink continued to play some fantastic bowls against a strong Waddesdon team and although we lost 6 ends in the game we earnt a great 26-11 win. Although the other rink of Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell, George Murdoch & Andy Watkins had a much closer start to the game they also played some great bowls against their Middleton Cup opposition and were 7-6 ahead after 11 ends when they then picked up 5 shots over the next 2 ends to take a good lead over the 2 rinks. They then picked up a 5 on the 20th end to take a 20-11 lead, at which point Waddesdon decided to shake hands. We will now be playing Aylesbury Town away in the next round and we are just waiting for some dates from Aylesbury for this match.

Saturday 4^th May – Hazells v Chalfont St Giles – Friendly – Won – 128 - 80

Considering this is meant to be a summer sport we encountered more winter weather than summer. We arrived in the middle of an hail storm which was the followed by some cold sunshine, followed by strong winds which blew the cricket sight screen over. Despite a short break in the middle of the game for a heavy shower we were able to complete this game and earn a great win for the club. Paul Warner, Matthew Crick & Ann Richardson picked up a 5 on the 3^rd end although after 5 ends the scores were level at 6-6. We then went on to win the next 5 ends picking up 10 shots in the process. This was looking like being a comfortable win however we then dropped 9 shots in 3 ends to only lead by 4 shots however thanks to a 6 on the last end we won 27-16. Karen Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & Mark Newman started slowly going 7-1 down after 5 ends however they then started to get to grips with the conditions and were 18-16 ahead going in to the last end however they then dropped a 4 to lose 20-18. Teresa Newman, Norman Handley & Roger Crick picked up highest winning rink courtesy of their 26-9 win, during which they lost just 6 ends. Barbara Ramsay, Kishore Seegoolam & David Logan controlled the game from the start and won 20-12, including picking up a 5 on the 9^th end. Joan Sweetman, Sid Brotherston & Carol Crick had a great start winning 8 of the first 11 ends to take a 15-4 lead however the hosts won 5 of the remaining ends however we held on for a 20-13 win. Sheila Lawlor, Roy Richardson & Denzil Ashcroft played out a close game and were 11-10 ahead after 14 ends however we then won the remaining ends to win 17-10.

Thursday 2^nd May – Hazells v Stony Stratford – Friendly – Won 102 - 79

This afternoon were treated to a great afternoon at Stony Stratford with the green bowling well, some great company, great bowls and meal after the game. Gary West, Ann Ramsay & Brian Abigail got off to a slow start and were 10-1 down after 5 ends however by the 16^th end they were 18-13 ahead. Unfortunately they then dropped 5 shots over the last 2 ends to draw 18-18. Paul Warner, Jan Moores & Eddie Chanell also got off to a slow start going 9-2 down after 6 ends and although they started to pull shots back it took them until the 16^th end, when they picked up a 6, before they took the lead and they went on to win 20-15. Andrew MacKenzie, Denise Boult & David Logan had a comfortable win, losing just 4 ends in their 21-7 win. Norman Handley, Rod Bacon & Gerry Moores got off to a great start winning the first 4 ends however by the 10^th end the scores were level at 9-9. The last 8 ends saw both teams win 4 ends each but we came out on top winning 15-14. Ellen Livett, Kath Cowan & Sid Brotherston took the early lead and were 11-5 ahead after 10 ends however the hosts then managed to get back in to the game and the scores finished level on 13-13. Sheila Lawlor, Denzil Ashcroft, & George Murdoch played out a close game however they finished the stronger to earn a 15-12 win.

Sunday 28^th April – Hazells v Kitcheners – Friendly – Away – Lost 87 – 83

This afternoon we travelled to Kitcheners and there were some interesting games on show. Ellen Livett, Tony Brindley & Gerry Moores started their game well and were 11-2 up after 6 ends however this is when the wheels fell off as we didn’t win another end in the game and ended up losing 29-11. June Redding, Sid Brotherston & Carol Crick dropped a single shot on each of the first 3 ends however they then picked up a 4 on the next end and the game swung between the 2 teams for the first 12 ends, at which point we were 12-10 behind however we then went on to win the last 6 ends to win 19-12. Leila Brindley, Jan Moores & Brian Abigail took the early lead in their game however they then dropped a 6 on the 7^th end and despite getting 4 shots back the next end they couldn’t get back in front and lost 21-16. Ann Ramsay, Josh Henley & Kim Challinor picked up highest winning rink of the game courtesy of their 22-9 win, during which they only lost 6 ends. Naomi Hooper, Andrew MacKenzie & Ashley Dean controlled their game from the start and were 12-11 ahead with 2 ends to go however they then dropped a 5 and could only get 3 shots back from the last end, losing 16-15 in the game.

Sunday 28^th April – Hazells v Herts B – London & Southern Counties Challenge Shield – Lost 39 - 36

This morning we made our debut in the London & Southern Counties competition with 1 rink at home and 1 away. At home Rob Stanbury, Pete Coyne, Andy Watkins & Paul Rogers played out a tight game with no more than 2 shots between the teams throughout the game and with scores level going in to the last end we won by 1 shot, 17-16. In the away game Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill, Mark Newman & Roger Crick got off to a bad start dropping 7 shots in the 1^st 3 ends although we managed to get back to 7-6 down after 6 ends. The scores were still level after 11 ends and we then dropped 6 over the next 2 ends however we then picked up 6 the next end to get back level. Unfortunately we were never able to get ahead and ended up losing 23-19, meaning we lost the overall match by 3 shots.

Saturday 27^th April – Mixed Singles League

Today we held the 1^st Mixed Singles League day in a change of format to ensure that bowlers got chance to get in some singles practice before some of the external competitions got started. This proved to be a more popular format with 19 people entering, 10 more than last season. Bowlers were split in to 2 groups and games were played over 7 ends with the winners of each group qualifying for the final over finals weekend. Although we weren’t able to complete all league games most bowlers played at least 5 games, with the remaining games to be scheduled later in the season. In group A Teresa Newman is leading the way having won 5 games and drawn 1 and in group B it is tight at the top with Rob Stanbury 1 point ahead of Ellen Livett with a couple of games left to play.

Thursday 25^th April – Hazells v Dunstable – Friendly – Lost – 83 - 104

Despite the winning start to our seasons friendlies this afternoon saw a reversal of fortunes with just 1 winning rink and 1 drawn rink. Dave Day, Terry & George led from the start and although the home side fought back to level the scores at 6-6 after 10 ends we then went on to pick up 10 shots over the next 5 ends and finished up as our only winning rink with a 16-12 score. Cath, Ellen & Sid took the early lead in their game however they then dropped 9 shots over 4 ends and never recovered, losing 17-12. Denise, Andrew & Roger got off to a terrible start dropping 9 shots from the 1^st 5 ends and despite picking up a 6 to get back to just 2 shots behind they were never able to get in front and lost 24-16. Norman Handley, Jan & Eddie dropped a 5 early on in the game and were always playing catch up and were 14-9 down with 3 ends to play. They then picked up 3 shots on each of the next 2 ends and unfortunately dropped a single shot on the last end to draw 15-15. Sheila, Dave Wheeler & Gerry played out a close game and were 13-11 ahead after 14 ends however they then dropped 7 shots over the next 2 ends and finished up losing 19-14. Gary, Carol Crick & David Logan struggled in their game and only won 8 ends in their game which ended up in a 17-10 loss.

Sunday 21^st April – Hazells v Flackwell Heath – Friendly – Won 126 - 92

This afternoon we got our club friendlies underway at Flackwell Heath and with a lot of members looking to play we were able to give Flackwell 4 players to make the game a 5 triples and 1 pairs match. Teresa, Ian & Roger got off to a great start going 10-0 ahead after 3 ends and by the time we broke for tea they were 13-7 ahead. The tea break had the usual impact with the home side getting back to just 2 shots behind however we then picked up 14 shots over 4 ends and finished highest winning rink with a 27-14 win. Ellen, Keith & David took a couple of ends to get in to the game however when they picked up 5 shots over 2 ends they then took the lead and always remained ahead and went on to win 20-13. Inger, Pete & Steve went behind early on in their game, mainly due to Sid playing well for Flackwell, and despite winning 9 ends each they lost 21-15. June, Carol Crick & Mark got off to a steady start and on the 8^th end they picked up a 7 to take a 13-4 lead and from there they went on to win 19-12. Barbara, Rob & Ashley took the early lead in their game however a run of 7 ends without picking up a shot saw them 11-4 behind however they then went on to win 5 of the last 7 ends to win 18-16. In the pairs Gerry & Eddie were 6-0 down after 3 ends however they then picked up 5 over the next 2 ends and despite losing the next 2 ends they then picked up 12 shots over the next 5 ends to take a 17-11 lead and they continued to control the game, finishing with 7 shots from the last 2 ends to win 27-16.
