CORONA VIRUS UPDATE

The Hazells Committee are regularly reviewing the situation with this current crisis and how it is impacting the club and will ensure that communications are sent to members and regular updates posted on this website.

22nd August

This afternoon we played a new format, Ultimate Bowls Challenge, which has become a popular format in Australia. The games are played as 3 Wood Pairs and played over just 5 ends a game. With 3 points available for every toucher, 3 points for holding shot after the leads have bowled and a further 10 points for shot wood, 5 for 2nd and 3pts for 3rd wood there a plenty of points up for grabs each end. We played 5 games of 5 ends and the top 4 teams at the end of the session would progress to finals weekend. Once the pairs had come to terms with the scoring this prooved to be an enjoyable afternoon with some great bowls on show. Teresa & George won all 5 of their games, having shot wood, 10points, on 18 of the 25 ends. In 2nd place with 4 wins from 5 games were Sue & Andy, picking up 10points from 16 of the 25 ends, along with 12 touchers. In 3rd place, also with 4 wins but just 9 touchers, were Inger & Daniel. Taking the final spot in the club finals were Anne & Josh who won 3 of the 5 games, having the important shot bowl on 14 of the 25 ends, although they only managed 6 touchers through out the games. The finals will be a knockout match which sees Teresa & George play Anne and Josh and Sue & Andy play Daniel and Inger. This will again be a 5 end match to qualify for the final of a further 5 ends.

25th July

This morning we managed to get the Ryder Cup Style competition under way with 9 bowlers per team and we played 1 single, 2 pairs and 1 triples game. Team Europe, led by Steve McNeill took 3 of the first 4 points and in the 2nd set of games the 2 teams picked up 2 points each however the 3rd session, before lunch, saw Team Europe, led by Roger Crick, fight back to pick up a 3-1 win to go in to the break level at 6 - 6. After lunch the team sizes increased to 11 a side meaning there would be 1 singles, 3 pairs and 1 triples game. We got about 30 mins in the 4th round of matches when the heavens opened and play had to be abandoned for the day and we hope to complete the match on Saturday 8th August.

18th July

We will be running another fun competition on Saturday 18th July with a 1.30pm start time and the format will be decided on the day depending on numbers taking part.

We had 18 members taking part this afternoon and played the American Tournament format again and this was another great afternoons bowls. We played 5 games of 5 ends each with the top2 scores of the afternoon winning a prize. Teresa & Carol went in to the last game tied for the lead with 29 shots and they had remained tied at the end of each of the 1st 4 games and with 5 ends left to play Carol picked up 8 shots from her last game however thanks to picking up a 4 on the last end Teresa picked up 9 to win by 1 shot 38 to 37. These 2 had led from the start and the next closest score was Andy with 30.

11th July

This afternoon we played an Aussie Pairs competition and with 20 entrants we split in to 2 groups playing 3 games of 50 mins and the winner of each group then played a 6 end final. In the group of 6 Teresa & Judy and Karen & Daniel both won 2 of their 3 games however Andrew and Roger won all 3 of their games to reach the final. In the group of 4 each team played each other and Sue Watkins & Paul Rogers won 2 and drew 1 game to also reach the final. In the final Sue & Paul picked up 5 shots from the 1st 2 ends however Roger & Andrew got 4 back from the next 2 ends however they then dropped a 2 meaning they were 3 down going in to the last end and were only able ot pick up 1. Congratulations to Sue & Paul on their win.

4th July

Today we had another 24 members split in 2 sessions for another fun competition which ran throughout the day. Teams of 3 were drawn with each bowler playing 1 game of singles, 1 leading a pair and 1 skipping a pair in 3 games of an hour. So with each team playing the other 3 teams in their session and with 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw the 2 session winners would end up playing a final over finals weekend. The morning session saw some great games however it was the team of Sue Watkins, Daniel Watkins & Matthew Crick that earnt a place in the final winning 5 of their 6 games. The afternoon session was closer fought with Steve McNeill, Barbara Ramsay &  Joan Sweetman winning 4 of their 6 games however they were to lose out by 1 point to Ian Ramsay, Teresa Newman & Norman Handley who won 4 and drew 1 game. Thanks to everyone that once again supported this event and with the bar also now re-opening we are starting to see some early signs of things slowly returning to a new form of normality.

Next weekend there is no competition scheduled in order to keep the green free for members to get some of their Lockdown Singles & Pairs games played however if not many rinks are taken then I will look to try and organise something so please keep an eye out for the email.

27th June

Todays Ryder Cup style competition was again well supported and despite the early rain there were some great games played throughout the day. Steve McNeill captained the European Team while Roger Crick led the UAS team. There were 28 points available throughtout the day with a point for each game, with 2 Wood, Singles, Pairs & Triples games being played. We set the green up with 7 rinks so that we could 4 of the rinks for play, ensuring that we were able to maintain social distancing. This was a close game throughout and the USA team only needed 3.5 points from the last 8 however a determined effort from the European team saw them close the gap and we went in to the final four games with the USA leading 13 - 11, however USA were only able to pick up a single win from teh 4 games and the match ended in an honorable draw. Thanks again to all those that took part and made this another enjoyable day at the club. The draw for the Lockdown Singles & Pairs competitions were also made and details can be found on the Competitions Page of this site in the next couple of days.

20th June

Today we held another fun competition for those that have felt able to re-start bowling this season and the format o fthe day was the American Tournament where bowlers select a team and position in a team at random. They play 5 games of 5 ends, kepping their own scorecard, with the winner being the bowler with the highest score at the end of the competition. In order to maintain current rules we split the competition between a  morning and afternoon session with 14 playing in the morning and 18  inthe afternoon. There were some great games in the morning with not too many high scores being achieved and after the session had finished Josh was leading on 32 points with Roger in 2nd on 30 points. The afternoon session got underway with a "Full House" and Ian, Rod & Daniel got off to a great start picking up 13 shots from their 1st game, overtaking the lowest score of the morning in just 1 game. Daniel & Rod increased their scores by 7 & 8 shots respectively in teh 2nd game and were looking good to win the day. Rod continued picking up shots throughout the afternoon, losing just 5 of the 25 ends played on his way to reaching 40 points. Daniel was keeping up with him however he then only won 2 of the last 9 ends and finished on 32 points, level with the morning winner Josh. Steve McNeill was also going along steadily throughout the afternoon, dropping just 1 shot from 13 ends and he then picked up a 5 on the 21st end to get himself back in the reckoning and he went on to also finish with 32 points. So Rod finished 1st and 2nd & 3rd places were decided on shot difference and Josh had +15, Daniel +16 & Steve +17. This was another great afternoon so thanks to all those tha took part.

Following the success of last weekends Triples competition we are arranging the American Tournament for Saturday 20th June. We will have 2 sessions at 10am and 2pm so if you are interested in taking part please contact Roger asap as numbers will be limited in order to comply with Social Distancing and current Bowls England guidelines on the number of people that can use the green at any one time.

We are also looking to run a "Lockdown Singles & Pairs" competition so if you are interested in taking part please contact Roger by the 20th so that the draw can be made.

10th June Update

We are looking to run a fun competition for members on Saturday at either 10am or 2pm so if you are interested please let Roger know by Friday 12th June so that we can see if there is enough interest. 5th June Update

Following the latest guidance from Bowls England we are now able to play singles, pairs or triples games on the green, whilst maintaining social distancing and keeping a rink free between each game. Spectators are also now welcome at the club, although will also need to follow social distancing rules. The Bar and Clubhouse remain closed. If you are interested in booking a rink please send an email to admin@hazellsbowlsclub.co.uk or call Roger with your requirements.

Stay Safe

18th May Update

Following a recent committee meeting we have decided to re-open the green to club members only for the purpose of restricted roll ups. Details of which can be found via the Rink Books tab on this site. We have set out the rules for use of the green and these are inline with Government & Bowls England guidance

17th March Update

With Government now asking people to minimise their social contact and specifically avoid clubs, pubs, and theatres, we therefore have no real alternative but to follow their instructions and close without delay Monday Whist Drive & Short Mat, Oakfield Ladies Meeting, Wednesday’s Line Dancing, Thursday’s Crib, and Friday’s Darts Night. These steps are taken very reluctantly and as ever remain in the best interests of all our members.

The committee will monitor on a daily basis as events unfold, and will keep everyone posted as and when changes need to be made.

I know there are members within our club of a certain age group who are more vulnerable to infection than most, and may have difficulty with sourcing essential supplies etc., if this should be the case then please let me know and we as a club will endeavour to help as best we can

16th March Update

The green maintenance program is currently under review in relation to a potential delay in the start of the season so for all green team members the green manager will be in touch when your help is required.

As I am sure you will all appreciate any decision being taken by the committee during this crisis is for the benefit of our members and the club as a whole so your support is appreciated. If any members have any concerns that they want to raise please contact any of the comittee members so that it can be addressed in the apprioriate manner.

Please all remain vigilant and stay safe and lets all hope that by the time the threat levels are reduced that we will still get in some game time this season.
