MID BUCKS KNOCKOUT CUP CHAMPIONS

There was only 1 way to start this weeks newsletter and that was with the great news that we have finally managed to get our name on this trophy. This was made all the better as it was at the expense of our local rivals Waddesdon. Despite having to make some changes to our team compared to the semi final the determination to win was evident from the start. With Keith unavailable Alan King was called up to play in the singles and despite his surprise it was his performances over finals weekend that earnt him his place. Despite some early nerves he fully justified his selection with an outstanding win against the Bucks County Singles Runner Up Andrew Litchfield. Andrew took the early lead and was 15 – 9 ahead however Alan showed a great spirit to fight back and eventually won the game 21-16 to give the 1st point to Hazells. Alan’s win was greeted with a great cheer from the incredible support from our ladies which then gave the rest of the team a lift. In the Pairs Pete Coyne & Roger Crick had also started slowly and were 11-4 down however the lift from Alan’s win saw them get back in to the game and take the lead, also winning 21-16. Getting the 2nd win on the board this then meant that providing we didn’t lose the other 2 rinks by more than 9 shots we would be champions. However that was never going to be an acceptable result and Gerry Moores, Steve McNeill and Mark Newman were always in control of their game, leading from the start and despite Waddesdon’s best efforts to get back in to the game they weren’t able to match the great bowls we played. So with 3 wins we had secured the trophy which just left the rink with Andrew MacKenzie, Rob Stanbury, Eddie Chanell and George Murdoch. Again all 4 of our players put in a great performance and despite being 18-17 ahead going in to the last end the match was already won however Waddesdon wanted to play the last end to at least get 1 point however we then picked up another shot to give us a fantastic 4-0 whitewash. Such was the nature of our win that just 3 of the Waddesdon players stayed for the presentation and drink after the game. Thanks go out to all of you that came to support the team as it really made a difference and ensured that we could round off a successful season in style. Thanks also to those players that played in earlier rounds but that were not available for the final, we couldn’t have done it without you all and it just highlights the strength we now have in the club. Following the game Kim prepared a fantastic roast lunch for all of the team and this was a perfect way to celebrate our win so big thanks to Kim.

15th October 2017 – Corners Competition

In our traditional end of season’s corners competition we welcomed some new faces to this great event to finish the season before the winter break. For those that played in this competition they all enjoyed the experience. There were 18 players taking part and Dave Edwards various practice sessions over the last few weeks (Yes Dave we did see you practicing !!!!) paid off as he won 2 of the 10 corners played, both coming from the same corner. Steve also won 2 corners and there were 6 other winners each winning £5: Carol Crick, Roger Crick, Mark Newman, Karen Seegoolam, Ian Ramsay & Roy Richardson.

Thanks to all those that took part and made this an enjoyable way to close out the season.

14th October 2017 – Men v Ladies

After a great season for both the Men & Ladies this season with the 2 Ladies reaching Leamington and the Men winning the Bucks Knockout Cup there was only 1 way to end the season and that was a Men v Ladies match. With 9 Men against 8 Ladies we played 1 Triple v a Pair and 3 Pairs matches. Dave Edwards, Len Tuffs & Steve McNeill played against Teresa Newman & Anne Farmer and it was the ladies that got off to a great start going 9-0 ahead after just 4 ends although by the end of the 10th end the score was much closer at 11-8 to the ladies. However they then picked up 11 shots over the next 4 ends to give themselves a healthy lead that the men couldn’t overcome, with the match finishing 23-14. Ellen Livett & Inger McNeill were playing Paul Warner & Roy Richardson and they also got the ladies off to a great start taking an 11-3 lead after 6 ends. From there they continued to dominate the game winning 23-11. Kath Cowan & Carol Crick got off to a slow start in their game against Jack Pipe & Roger Crick, going 10-4 down after 8 ends however when they picked up 3 shots on the next end the match turned completely and they went on to win 7 of the last 9 ends, picking up 21 shots in the process to win 25-13. In the final game Dan Livett & Mark Newman restored a small amount of pride for the men as they got the only win for the men courtesy of their 19-12 win against June Redding & Ann Richardson. The Ladies won the match 83-57

8th October 2017 – Captain v President

This afternoon we brought the season to an end with the Captain v President match and it was great to see so many of you taking part. Barbara Ramsay, Inger McNeill & George Murdoch got the Captain’s team off to a great start with a 20-8 win against Dave Edwards, John Simmons & George Murdoch. Norman Bonham, Carol Crick & Eddie Chanell were involved in a much closer game and were 6-5 down after 10 ends however they then picked up 10 shots over the next 5 ends without reply. Kishore Seegoolam, Sue Smith & Jan Moores finished strongly though, picking up 6 shots on the last 3 ends which gave the Captains team a 15-12 win. Carol Chanell, Ellen Livett, Ian Ramsay & Steve McNeill fell behind early against Maureen Warwick, Michelle Higgs, Alan King & Tom HollanHolland and it was the Presidents rink that won 15-9. Highest winning rink of the afternoon went to the Captains trio of Teresa Newman, Dave Wheeler & Kim Challinor courtesy of their 22-8 win against Jack Pipe, Rod Bacon & Gerry Moores. The Presidents triple of Karen Seegoolam, Anne Farmer & Andrew MacKenzie were involved in a close game for the first half against Kath Cowan, Len Tuffs & Keith Harper however the President’s triple then picked up 13 shots over the next 5 ends on their way to a 22-11 win. In the last game Sheila Lawlor, Matthew Crick & Mark Newman took the early lead for the Captain’s team against Dan Livett, June Redding & Brian Abigail  however the President’s team then fought back and won the game 14-11. The final result saw the Captain’s team win 88 - 79

7th October 2017 – Hazells v Houghton Regis – Won 92 – 91

After suffering a heavy defeat in the away game at Houghton Regis a few weeks ago we were hoping to sign off this season’s friendlies with a win. In one of the most enjoyable fixtures in the season there was some great games and banter between the teams on all rinks. Geoff Knott, Roy Richardson, Kim Challinor & George Murdoch played out a very close game and were 2 shots ahead after 9 ends howeve rhey then dropped a 4 and remained 2 shots behind going in to the last end however they then picked up a 3 to win by 1 shot, 15-14. Matthew Crick, Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Steve McNeill had a great game on their rink and went behind early on however they then picked up a 5 on the 6th end to go 7-5 ahead and from there they pushed on to go 11-11 ahead with just 2 ends to go however they then dropped 2 on the penultimate end and on the last end dropped a 5 to lose by 1 shot. Jack Pipe, Dan Livett, Andrew MacKenzie & Mark Newman started well picking up 3 shots on the first end however they then dropped a series of 3’s & 4’s and by the 16th end they were 11-11 behind. They then picked up 11 shots over the next 3 ends to take a 22-17 lead and then went on to win 23-18. Ellen Livett, Inger McNeill, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick were level at 5-5 after 5 ends however they then picked up 8 shots without reply over the next 4 ends and controlled the game throughout on their way to highest winning rink with a 25-15 win. Len Tuffs, Dave Wheeler, Gerry Moores & Eddie Chanell were up against a tough rink and despite being level at 4-4 after 5 ends they then dropped 10 shots over the next 4 ends and from there they struggled to get back in to the game losing 26-12.

1st October 2017 – Buckingham West End v Hazells  - Won 92 – 88

This afternoon we played our final away game of the season at Buckingham and having called off the home game earlier in the season due to a waterlogged green the forecast wasn’t great for today. However with just a light drizzle at times during the game we managed to get the game played on a green that bowled particularly well. The game was played with a mixture of rinks and triples and Anne Farmer, Len Tuffs and Steve McNeil played against a rink from Buckingham and they got off to a very slow start going 14-1 down after 10 ends however we then stopped for tea and this seemed to be just what they needed as they managed to get back in to the game, although they still lost 19-11. Carol Crick, Dan Livett, Inger McNeill & Mark Newman picked up highest winning rink even though they dropped o 6 on the last end. Having picked up a 6 themselves earlier in the game they had built a comfortable lead and won 26-17. Kath Cowan, Roy Richardson & Roger Crick had an entertaining game on their rink which had been close throughout and we had gone in to the tea break having just picked up a 6 to go 13-7 ahead. However the hosts then picked up 7 shots over the next 3 ends before we then picked up 7 over the next 3 ends. With Buckingham holding shots on the 17th end we managed to kill the end and picked up a single shot on the replayed end before Buckingham picked up 2 on the last end which gave us a 21-16 win. Norman Bonham, Herbie Taylor (Buckingham player) Rod Bacon & Kim Challinor also played out a close game which saw them take a 14-9 lead after 13 ends however 3 ends later the scores were level at 14-14 and both sides picked up 1 shot each over the last 2 ends to draw 15-15. Maureen Warwick, Neil Thompson, Ellen Livett & Eddie Chanell started will winning the 1st 4 ends to go 7-0 ahead however they then lost the next 4 to bring the scores level at 7-7. We then picked up a 5 before losing the 5 ends to go 18-12 down. Despite picking up 6 over the last 2 ends we narrowly lost 21-19 in this game.

30th September 2017 – Hazells v Chalfont St Giles – Won 121-76

Having suffered a heavy defeat in the week against Stony we were looking to bounce back at home to Chalfont St Giles and with the away game having been very close, losing by 1 shot, today’s game saw some great bowls being played. Teresa Newman, Sheila Lawlor and George Murdoch certainly did their bit in today’s win with a 25 – 10 win. June Redding, Norman Handley & Mark Newman were involved in a close game and were 12-10 ahead after 15 ends however a string finish saw them pick up a further 8 shots over the last 3 ends to win 20-10. Sune Smith, Ian Ramsay & Steve McNeill were up against a strong Chalfont triple and they only won 6 ends during the game which they lost 21-14. Karen Seegoolam, Ellen Livett & Roger Crick took the early lead in their game, going 7-2 ahead after 8 ends however they then dropped 8 shots over the next 4 ends. We then managed to get ahead again after 15 ends but then dropped 5 shots over the next 2 ends and were only able to get 2 back on the last end, losing 15-13. Dan Livett, Carol Crick & Andrew MacKenzie picked up highest winning rink today courtesy of their 28-6 win. In the final game Anne Farmer, Roy Richardson & Kim Challinor were 11-6 down after 10 ends however we then picked up 11 shots over the next 4 ends and went on to win 21-14.

28th September 2017 – Hazells v Stony Stratford – Lost 84 – 121

This afternoons friendly was changed from 6 rinks to 6 triples and although the result didn’t go our way those that took part enjoyed their game. Anne Farmer, Ellen Livett & George Murdoch played out a close game and the scores were level at 8-8 after 9 ends, 12 – 12 after 14 ends and then having dropped a shot on the next end we then picked up a 5 to take 4 shot lead going in to the last 2 ends. We then dropped 2 before picking up 2 on the last end to win 19-15. Despite a good start and finish Sheila Lawlor, Dave Edwards & Mark Newman lost their game as they only picked up 2 shots from the 5th end until the 16th end and finished up on the wrong side of a 22-14 scoreline. Carol Chanell, Andrew MacKenzie & Steve McNeill started slowly in their game however a run of 6 winning ends, picking up 14 shots, put them in a 16-6 lead and form there they went on to win 22-12. Ernie Abel, Dan Livett & Eddie Chanell got off to a disappointing start dropping 6 shots over the 1st 2 ends however they then fought back and the scores were level at 10-10 after 11 ends and they then traded shots equally over the last 7 ends with the score finishing at 14-14. Kath Cowan, Ron Jay & Brian Abigail had “one of those days” this afternoon when nothing seemed to go right and they only won 4 ends during the game, losing 32-6. Sue Smith, Roy Richardson & Gerry Moores had an equally disappointing afternoon winning just 5 ends on their way to a 26-9 defeat.

26th September 2017 – Winslow v Hazells – Mixed Triples Friendly – Lost 41 - 50

This afternoons match was reduced to 3 triples and Kath Cowan, Rod Bacon & Eddie Chanell got off to a great start taking the early lead however the home side soon got back in to the game and we ended up losing 17 – 10. Sue Smith, Maureen Warwick & Anne Farmer got off to the worst possible start dropping a 7 on the 2nd end however they started getting back in to the game with a run of 5 ends without dropping another shot and by the 15th end we were just 1 shot behind however we then dropped a further 5 shots and lost 19-14. In the final game Norman Bonham, Terry Root & Andrew MacKenzie got off to a great start picking up 11 shots over the 1st 3 ends however the home side then started to get back in to the game and by the 14th end the scores were level at 13-13. Having started so well we were determined not to lose the game and finished up winning 17-14.

24th September 2017 – Hazells v Tring – Mixed Friendly – Won 60-52

Having cancelled the away game earlier in the season we were pleased to have enough names for the home game this afternoon. Teresa Newman, Carol Crick & Mark Newman got off to a positive start going 7-2 ahead after 5 ends, however they then dropped a shot on each of the next 4 ends. They then took control back, winning the next 5 ends and won the game 20-9. Inger McNeill, Rob Stanbury & Steve McNeill played out a very close game with 16 of the ends only won with 1 shot however it was the Tring triple that edged the game 12-8. June Redding, Ellen Livett & Ann Richardson were level at 4-4 after 7 ends however they then picked up 7 shots over the next 3 ends before going on to win 24-8. Ann Ramsay, Roy Richardson & Eddie Chanell were always in control of their game winning 17-10. Neil Thompson, Ian Ramsay & Pete Coyne took the early lead in their game going 8-5 ahead after 9 ends however in a game of 2 halves it was Tring that won the 2nd half 8-5 to finish with the scores level at 13-13.

23rd September 2017 - Long Crendon v Hazells - Lost 100 - 93

This afternoon we travelled to Lond Crendon for a 5 Triples friendly and we had an enjoyable afternoon on a green that was a pleasure to bowl on. Sheila Lawlor, Rod Bacon & Ann Richardson were involved in a close game and when they picked up a 5 they went in to a 9-5 lead however that lead didn't last long as they then dropped a 4 on the next end and only won 3 more ends in the game, losing 18-12. Kath Cowan, Dan Livett & Roger Crick were involved in a high scoring game, dropping a 7 and 5 in the space of 3 ends and after 13 ends they were 24-8 down however they then picked up 11 shots over the next 4 ends and finished up losing 28-19. In another high scoring game Anne Farmer, Carol Crick & Steve McNeill took control of their game from the start and were 14-7 ahead after 11 ends however they then dropped a 6 to just hold a 1 shot lead. They then went on to win 5 of the last 6 ends to give us a 30-14, highest winning rink. Andrew MacKenzie, Roy Richardson & Mark Newman started slowly and were 5-1 down after 5 ends however they then picked up 9 shots over the next 4 ends to take a lead and from there they pushed on to win 24-11. Ann Ramsay, Ellen Livett & Inger McNeill struggled to come to terms with the green this afternoon and were 9-0 down after 4 ends. They then won 4 of the next 6 ends before losing the last 8 ends to lose 29-8

19th September 2017 – Hazells Gala Day

What another great day we had today for our Gala Day and despite a rather cold and foggy start to the day all the teams were in great spirits. Mark & Steve had the Bacon & Sausages cooking early, which went down especially well with the first group of teams. We had to provide 2 teams as we hadn’t been able to fill all the places and the way that Carol, Andrew, Len & George started it appeared that no one had told them they weren’t allowed to win the day as the won their first game, winning every end. There were some great games to watch throughout the day and the final was a very close game between Long Crendon & Wendover and it was Wendover that came out as winners. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank all of you that were able to help with the successful running of the day. There is a lot of hard work that goes in to the Gala Day both before and during the day and it is a tribute to our members that the day went so well and is yet another example of what a great club we have.

15th September 2017 – Leighton Buzzard v Hazells – Mixed Friendly – Won 60-52

This evening we were invited to play in a floodlit friendly at Leighton Buzzard and so took 3 rinks for the game. Gerry Moores, Kim Challinor, Pete Coyne & Mark Newman started well however the hosts then took control of the game and we only won 7 of the ends in their 23-14 defeat. Lionel Cheshire, Inger McNeill, Steve McNeill & George Murdoch started their game slowly however by the 6th end they started to get back in to the game and only lost 4 more ends on their way to an impressive 29-10 win. The final game was equally as close with Kath Cowan, Rob Stanbury, Matthew Crick & Roger Crick enjoying a great game which saw no more than 2 shots between the teams throughout the match. Despite going in to the last 2 ends 17-15 ahead we then dropped 4 shots over the last 2 ends to lose 19-17. This was a great game under the lights and I think everyone enjoyed it and we have agreed to include in our fixtures next year. The edge was taken off the evening though when we left to come home as Lionel took a fall whilst coming out of the changing rooms and many of you have probably seen the results so we wish him a speedy recovery.

10th September 2017 – Hazells v Wing – Mixed Friendly – Won 91-70

This afternoon we were looking to bounce back after the loss at Houghton Regis and the team didn’t disappoint. Teresa Newman, Len Tuffs & Inger McNeill had a comfortable 25-7 win. Ann Ramsay, Rob Stanbury & Steve McNeill had a closer game throughout, drawing 16-16. Dan Livett, Norman Bonham & Mark Newman took an early lead only for Wing to take back control and go 13-10 ahead. By the 15th end the scores were level at 14-14 however we then dropped 7 shots from 2 ends and lost 21-18. Maureen Warwick, Andrew MacKenzie & Pete Coyne went behind early in this game however they fought back well to stay in the game and thanks to picking up 6 shots over the last 3 ends they earnt a 15-15 draw. June Redding, Ellen Livett & Kim Challinor led from the start in their game and despite losing 5 ends in a row in the middle of the game they were still able to hold on for a 17-11 win.

9th September 2017 – Houghton Regis v Hazells – Lost 103-72

This afternoon we travelled to Houghton Regis for what had in previous years been a Men’s fixture however with dwindling numbers this was switched from a 5 Mens Rink match to a 5 Mixed Triples match. This has always been a very enjoyable fixture and despite the result was once again enjoyed by all. Ellen Livett, Matthew Crick & Steve McNeill provided our only winning rink of the afternoon courtesy of their 19-12 win. Dan Livett, Ann Richardson & Roger Crick got off to a dreadful start dropping 10 shots in the first 5 ends and despite a late comeback this was to be too big a deficit to recover from and they lost 22-14. Carol Crick, Andrew MacKenzie & George Murdoch dropped 6 shots on 2 separate ends and despite winning 10 of the ends those 2 ends were difficult to recover from and they lost 22-15. Inger McNeill, Kim Challinor & Mark Newman won the first end and then lost 11 of the next 12 ends and despite winning the last 5 ends we lost 20-10. In the final game Roy Richardson, Norman Handley & Keith Harper suffered the same fate as most of the rinks today in that they lost 5 of the first 6 ends, dropping 14 shots in the process. Once again this left us too much to do and the final score saw us lose 27-14.

26th August 2017 – Hazells International Tournament

Despite the disappointing turnout which saw the game reduced to just 4 triples on each team, those that did attend enjoyed the afternoon. Tom Holland captained the England & Wales team whilst Paddy Martin led the Ireland & Scotland team. Sue Smith, Neil Thompson & Carol Crick played against Sheila Holland, Paddy Martin & Kishore Seegoolam and it was the England/Wales team that led from the start, winning 27-6. Kath Cowan, Matthew Crick & Tom Holland were against Karen Seegoolam, Geoff Knott & George Murdoch and this was to be a close game with some entertaining rivalries on show. The England/Wales team edged this game 16-13, thanks to a strong finish which saw them pick up 6 shots in the last 3 ends. Ann Ramsay, Roy Richardson & Kim Challinor represented England/Wales against Dan Livett, Ron Jay & Len Tuffs and it was the Ireland/Scotland side that had the better of this game winning 21-11. Anne Farmer, Ann Richardson & Roger Crick represented England/Wales against Michelle Higgs, Ellen Livett & Andrew Mackenzie and it was the England team that controlled this game from the start going 13-2 ahead after 9 ends and they only lost 4 ends in the game, winning 26-5. The England/Wales team won the match 80-45

12 Hour Bowls Marathon – Bank Holiday Monday

The Crick family would like to say a huge thank you to all of you that supported our bowls marathon on Monday. We really enjoyed the day and although there were some tired limbs on Tuesday the support you showed was far beyond what we had expected. To those of you that came along it certainly helped us through the day and the “banter” was great fun. The challenge from Kim, Teresa & Mark was great fun and although they won the 10 end game they generously donated an additional £5 each to join us. Thanks also to Kim for arranging the Hot Dogs which seemed to go down well and helped contribute further to the cause. Once all sponsorships/donations have come in we will have raised £457-50 through this day alone and your generosity has touched us all and I can’t put in to words just how grateful we are, although it does show why we have such a great club here.

20th August 2017 – Hazells v Cheddington – Mixed Triples Friendly – Won 110 – 92

This was another close game with both sides winning on 3 rinks. Paul Warner, June Redding & Eddie Chanell picked up 5 shots on the first end and from there controlled the game, losing just 6 ends on their way to a 25-10 win. Kath Cowan, Alan King & Kim Challinor got off to a slow start, dropping 10 shots in 3 ends, however they managed to pull back and were just 14-12 down after 13 ends. Unfortunately they then lost the next 4 ends and finished up losing 18-14. Dan Livett, Carol Chanell & Roger Crick had a tough afternoon and were always behind in their game, losing 20-15. Highest winning rink of the afternoon went to Sheila Lawlor, Ellen Livett & Pete Coyne in a game that saw them lose just 5 ends as they won 23-6. John Hamilton, Ann Ramsay & Matthew Crick got off to a great start going 9-0 ahead after 5 ends however by the 13th end they were 16-12 down. They then managed to pull the game back round with a determined finish which saw them win the game 20-17. Sue Smith, Geoff Knott & Brian Abigail struggled in their game, winning just 6 ends in a 21-13 loss.

22nd August 2017 – Hazells v Aston Clinton – Ladies Friendly – Lost 57 - 46

19th August 2017 – Hazells v Bicester – Mixed Triples Friendly – Won 87-78

This afternoon we welcomed Bicester for a 5 triples friendly. This was a close game with 2 winning rinks each and a drawn rink. Sue Smith, June Redding & Andrew MacKenzie were our other winning rink although their game was much closer and the teams went in to the last end level at 13-13. We then picked up the shot on the last end to win this rink. Dan Livett, Norman Bonham & Carol Crick took control of their game from the start going 13-4 ahead after 9 ends however it was the visitors that then got back in to the game and were a shot ahead going in to the last end however we managed to win the last end for the draw. Sheila Lawlor, Anne Farmer & Mark Newman had a tough afternoon and were still in the game when they unfortunately dropped a six which meant they were then playing catch up for the rest of the game and ended up losing 20-14. Teresa Newman, Ian Ramsay & Roger Crick started the game well and led throughout the game however their opponents got back in to the game and despite being a shot ahead going in to the last end we then dropped 2 shots to lose 20-19.

Paul Warner, Norman Handley & Rod Bacon only lost 6 ends in their game as they went on to win 20-9.

6th August 2017 – Wing v Hazells – Lost 101 - 69

After a disappointing run of games we travelled to Wing today for what is usually a tough game and today was to be no different. Sue Smith, Inger McNeill & Eddie Chanell had an afternoon to forget picking up just 5 shots themselves and being on the receiving end of a Hotshot which saw them lose 27-5. Despite losing the first 5 ends Anne Farmer, Roy Richardson & Neil Thompson then got in to the game and by the 15th end they were level at 16-16 and they then went on to win 20-16. Len Tuffs, Ellen Livett & Steve McNeill struggled in their game winning just 6 ends on their way to a 20-13 defeat. Roy Richardson, Kath Cowan, Len Tuffs & Eddie Chanell were involved in a very close game throughout but were able to hold on for a 16-15 win. The overall score on the night saw Hazells win 115 – 98, although it was still an overall defeat 245 – 199.

29th July 2017 – Leighton Buzzard v Hazells – Lost 90 -62

This afternoon Neil Thompson took on the Captain’s role for the game and this turned out to be a tough afternoon for him and the team. John Hamilton, Norman Handley & Anne Farmer kept with the hosts over the first few ends however a run of 6 ends without picking up a shot meant they were then just playing catch up and they lost 22-9. Maureen Warwick, June Redding & Dave Wheeler were involved in a tight game with the sides level at 13-13 after 16 ends and they managed to win the last 2 ends to win 16-13. 23rd July 2017 – Hazells v Long Crendon – Lost 49 – 114

I have just received the cards for this game and as you will see from the scoreline there is not much good news to come from this game other than we did have 1 winning rink, which went to Captain for the day Anne Farmer, with Rod Bacon & Kim Challinor. None of the other rinks even managed to get to double figures so let’s just hope we can improve next time we face Long Crendon

30th June 2017 – Wendover v Hazells – Adams Cup – Lost – 147 - 84

This evenings first leg of the Adams Cup didn’t go according to plan, although with the hosts also having an open evening at the club it meant that they squashed the rinks up to have 8 rinks being used during the evening. With just 1 winning rink I won’t provide a report from this game, other than to say if Wendover can take this big a lead in to the 2nd leg then there is no reason why we can’t inflict the same on them when they visit Hazells, although over turning a 67 shot deficit won’t be easy J

Karen Seegoolam, Rod Bacon & Inger McNeill started well and were 8-5 ahead after 9 ends however it was the hosts that finished the stronger, winning 21-9. Teresa Newman, Ann Ramsay and Ellen Livett against started well and Ellen would have been enjoying her first outing as skip when she was leading 10-6 at the half way stage, however the hosts yet again finished the game well, picking up 12 shots over the last 4 ends to win 26-14. 10th June 2017 – Watlington v Hazells – Won 108 - 79

A big thanks goes out to Anne Farmer, Kim Challinor, Inger McNeill & Carol Crick who travelled to Bletchley in the morning and then as soon as their Top Club game finished they drove from Bletchley to Watlington to ensure that we could still fulfil this afternoon friendly fixture. A round trip of almost 80 miles !!!!

This was to prove a successful afternoon for Hazells with all 5 triples winning. Paul Warner, Inger McNeill & Roger Crick won 1 of the first 5 ends, however they then won the next 6 in a row to take a 13-4 lead only for the hosts to level the score by the 17th end, 15-15 however we managed to pick up 3 shots on the last end for the 18-15 win. This was an enjoyable afternoon with some great games and Group A was close with Mark Newman & Roy Richardson finishing with 101 however group winners were Roger Crick & Norman Bonham with 102 ½ points. 21st May – Linslade v Hazells – Lost 80 - 39

This afternoon’s game at Linslade was played on 1 of the most challenging greens we are likely to play on all season and one that none of our triples came to terms with throughout the game. 14th May 2017 – Princes Risborough v Hazells – Won 100 - 69

Today we travelled to Princes Risborough looking to follow on from yesterday’s success. Teresa Newman, Bob Perry & Pete Coyne got us off to a great start with a 25-14 win, although had it not been for a run of 8 ends won in a row in the middle of the match the result could have been very different. Kath Cowan, Rob Stanbury & Mark Newman found the green hard going and were never able to get ahead although they kept in touch throughout the match, narrowly losing 16-14. Dan Livett, Norman Handley & Keith Harper must have feared the worst when they dropped 7 shots on the 1st end however they battled back and were 11-10 ahead by the 10th end. The lead then swung between the 2 teams and the 17-17 draw was probably a fair result. Ellen Livett, Neil Thompson & John Smith took control of their game from the start, picking up 8 shots in the 1st 4 ends. Despite the hosts pulling the game back we finished the stronger to win 19-11. Lionel Cheshire, Carol Crick & Keith Harper were 5-3 up after 4 ends however they then dropped 10 shots over the next 4 ends to go 13-5 down. 9th May 2017 – Wingrave v Hazells – Won 81-67

Tonight’s 5 triples friendly at Wingrave proved and enjoyable, yet challenging evening, as the green was running well but almost indoor pace. As both teams struggled to find the right weight early in the game there were plenty of woods finding the ditch however this didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the game. Inger McNeill, Kim Challinor & Mark Newman won highest winning rink courtesy of their 20-9 win. Anne Farmer, Rob Stanbury & Roger Crick took the early lead only to be pegged back by their hosts and they were 8-3 down after 7 ends. They then got back in to the game and ended up winning 21-13. Rob Whetter and Pete Coyne soon found that playing alongside Captain Steve was going to require patience as he kept up his run of late wins having been behind for 17 ends they went in to the last end 1 shot behind however they managed to pick up a 4 to win 17-14. Rod Bacon, Andrew MacKenzie & Gerry Moores had a good battle in their game, trailing 6-3 after 9 ends they then won the next 5 ends to take a 9-6 lead however it was the hosts who finished the stronger winning 13-10. 7th May 2017 – Cheddington v Hazells – Won 94-87

This afternoon we made the short trip to Cheddington for a 6 Triples friendly and were pleasantly surprised at how well the green bowled when compared to previous visits last season. Maureen Warwick, Rod Bacon & Gerry Moores got off to a slow start going 9-0 down after 5 ends however they then slowly started to get back in to the game and by the 15th end they managed to get their noses in front 15-13. With both sides picking up a shot each in the last 2 ends this game finished with a 16-14 win. Highest winning rink of the afternoon went to Kishore Seegoolam, June Redding & Jan Moores courtesy of their 21-10 win, although they didn’t have it all their own way as it took until the 11 end to get in front however they did only lose 5 ends in the game. Sue Smith, Matthew Crick & Steve McNeill had a comfortable win going ahead in the 2nd end and from there on in they never lost the lead, winning 20-11. Sue Morgan, Norman Bonham & Brian Abigail found themselves on the wrong side of a 24-10 score line, although the game was closer than the scores suggest as we dropped 15 shots in just 4 ends. Sheila Lawlor, Norman Handley & Keith Harper took an early lead in their game and never lost control on their way to a 17-11 win. Karen Seegoolam, Lionel Cheshire & Eddie Chanell got off to a slow start and struggled to keep in the game, even though both sides won 9 ends each.

Kath Cowan, Anne Farmer & Mark Newman went 8-0 down after just 3 ends however they then started to get in to the game and went 10-9 ahead after 11 ends. They continued to put the pressure on the home team and only lost 7 ends in the game on their way to a 20-13 win. Teresa Newman, Matthew Crick & Ian Ramsay had a great game where the lead swapped sides through the game although it was the home side that won 18-12. Barbara Ramsay, Inger McNeill & Roger Crick had a disastrous afternoon winning just 3 ends in their 25-4 defeat. Dan Livett, Rob Stanbury & Kim Challinor made a slow start but they finally managed to get ahead in the 15th end and held on for a 16-12 win. Ellen Livett, Carol Crick & Steve McNeill enjoyed their game which saw the lead swap several times however a strong finish saw them go from 11-10 down after 13 ends to win 18-12. Despite a slow start which saw Ann Ramsay, Neil Thompson & Pete Coyne drop 9 shots in the 1st four ends they fought back well to take our highest winning rink with a 23-14 win, which twice included picking up 5 shots.

4th May 2017 – Stony Stratford – Lost 77 - 166

There is not much to say about this afternoon’s match at Stony Stratford which started of badly as we were unable to field a full team and had to borrow players from our hosts. Unfortunately things didn’t change much when we got on the green as we lost on all 6 rinks and the score is one to forget as soon as possible.

Ducky Doo Dah Tour – 28th April to 1st May

This year’s tour to Great Yarmouth was another enjoyable weekend during which we played 4 matches, winning 118-110 in the sunshine at Bradwell with Norman Bonham, Teresa Newman & Roger Crick taking highest winning rink with a 28-6 win. On Saturday morning Anne Farmer and Neil gave us a lesson on putting at the local crazy golf course and this was followed by our 2nd win, 109-78, at Martham with Jack Pipe, Teresa Newman & Neil Thompson taking highest winning rink with a 22-8 win. On Sunday we had to battle against both the strong winds and the “night before” and despite a close game it was Caister that won 97-93, with Kath Cowan, Norman Bonham, Ann Ramsay & Neil Thompson taking highest winning rink with a 17-7 win.   On Monday we stopped off at Staniforth Bowls Club for our final game which ended up in a 105-87 defeat. Once again Neil took the highest winning rink, this time with Ann Ramsay & Carol Crick, winning 21-12.  With 2 wins and 2 defeats we improved on last year’s tour which saw us lose all 4 games so we look forward to next year’s tour in the hope of improving once again. Bowlers of the weekend went to Neil Thompson & Teresa Newman who both won all 4 of their games. Thanks to Kim for organizing the tour.

30th April – Hazells v Kitcheners Mixed Friendly – Lost 85-55

This afternoon we travelled to Kitcheners for the last of the “switched” games and this was to prove another difficult afternoon. Unfortunately we were also unable to field a full team and ended up playing 1 rink and 3 triples. The rink of Dave Edwards, Carol Chanell, Matthew Crick & Eddie Chanell had a slow start and were 13-4 down after 9 ends however a strong finish saw them pick up 15 shots in 5 ends and they narrowly lost 22-19. Sue Smith, Rod Bacon & John Smith started slowly however they had got themselves in to a winning position by the 15th end, leading 15-12, however they then dropped 9 shots and finished the game losing 21-16. June Redding, Rob Stanbury & Ann Richardson also had a tough afternoon, winning just 7 ends on their way to a 19-10 defeat. Sue Morgan, Roy Richardson & Pete Coyne started well and were level at 9-9 after 10 ends however it was the hosts that once again took control of the game, winning 23-10.

29th April – Hazells v Aston Clinton Mixed Friendly – Lost 107-88

This afternoon we visited Aston Clinton and unfortunately due to a late withdrawl we had to play 5 triples and 1 pair. The pair of Pete Coyne & John Smith turned out to be our highest winning rink with a 18-8 win, which included a run of 9 winning ends out of 10. Our only other winning rink came from Karen Seegoolam, Roy Richardson & Eddie Chanell who played out a very close game that they just edged 16-14. Despite winning 8 of the 18 ends Andrew MacKenzie, Ron Jay & Gerry Moores lost their game 19-12. Dave Wheeler, Norman Handley & Jan Moores won their first couple of ends however by the half way mark they found themselves 17-3 behind and this didn’t improve much in the 2nd half, losing 24-10.
