2nd June 2018 - American Tournament

This afternoon we had 20 bowlers taking part in this popular format where bowlers played 5 games of 5 ends, drawing their team and position after each game. This is always a fun afternoon and this year was to be no different, even though numbers were down on previous seasons. Despite bowling in teams each bowler keeps their own score with the winner being the person who scores the most shots after their 5 games.  There was a wide range of scores after the 5 games however in 3rd place was Carol Crick with 27 points, although she will be disappointed not to have won having only picked up 1 shot in her last game. In joint first place with 28 shots were Brian Abigail & Steve McNeill however it was Steve that won the event courtesy of the better shot difference of +14 compared to Brian’s of +7. Congratulations to Steve who regains his title, having lent it out to Inger last season, following his success in this competition in 2016.

3rd June 2018  - Aussie Pairs

This afternoon we had a full house of 12 teams entering the Aussie Pairs competition which saw bowlers drawn in pairs and then put in to 1 of 2 groups. Each team then played 3 games of 7 ends with the 2 group winners playing a 5 end final and the 2 runners up playing for 3rd place. With both players taking the lead & skip roles this was a great afternoons bowls and in group A the position couldn’t have been closer after the 3 games. Karen Seegoolam & Roger Crick, Gerry Moores & Alan King and Matthew Crick & Paul Rogers all finished on 19 points and so the competition rules were checked and we then looked at the number of ends won and this saw Matthew & Paul finish the group in 3rd place. The next rule to be invoked was the shot difference and that saw Karen & Roger qualify for the final with a shot difference of +13, whereas Gerry & Alan had +9. In group B Steve & Rob won all 3 of their games to qualify for the final with Andy & Jack finishing as runners up. In the 3rd place playoff Andy & Jack won their game to take the £5 each prize money. In the final Steve & Rob picked up a 4 on the 3rd end to go 5-1 ahead however Roger & Karen picked up 1 shot on the next end and they then picked up a 4 on the last end to take the match 6-5.

Kim Challinor, Gerry Moores & David Logan played Ellen Livett, Rob Stanbury & Andy Watkins and won this game comfortably, taking the first 10 ends to go 19-0 ahead and despite a late fightback they won 20-9.  Teresa Newman, Gary West & Mark Newman played Carol Crick, Pete Coyne & Keith Harper and they got off to a flying start going 15-6 ahead however Carol, Pete & Keith then got back in to the game and by the 16th end were 19-16 ahead and went on to win 19-18. Dave Wheeler, Matthew Crick & Ashley Dean played Ian Ramsay, Inger McNeill & Steve McNeill and Dave, Matthew & Ashley picked up 9 shots in 2 ends to take a 9-2 lead and from there they went on to win 17-10. Ann Ramsay, Norman Bonham & Sid Brotherston played Anne Farmer, Bob Worth & Brian Abigail and despite going 7-1 down after 5 ends they fought back well and by the 10th end were 10-7 ahead.
