BUCKS CUP

19th May 2021 - 6pm - Waddesdon - Lost 55-77 (0-14)

This evening we got off to a disappointing start to the Bucks Cup despite the confidence following the good win at Aylesbury on Monday. At home Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers got off to a great start going 11-1 ahead after 6 ends however the visitors slowly got back in to the game and by the 15th end we were 15-12 ahead. We then dropped a 4 and despite winning the shot on the 17th end to go in to the last end level we then dropped 2 on the last end to lose 18-16. Daniel Watkins Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman were our other triple at home and they had a tough evening from the start and despite the scores being close for the majority of the game they dropped 10 shots from the last 4 ends to lose 20-9. Ian Ramsay, Roger Crick & Tony Osborne found conditions tricky at Waddesdon however after 11 ends they were a shot behind only to then drop 6 shots from the next 3 ends and despite picking up 5 from the last 2 ends narrowly lost 18-16. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins fought back well in their game from 12-3 down they pulled the score back to 13-12 down after 15 ends only to suffer a disastrous end dropping a 5 with 2 ends play and finished up on the wrong side of a 21-14 scoreline. Despite the disappointing result we now put this game behind us and look forward to a double header with Cheddington over the next week with MBL on Friday and the Bucks Cup next Wednesday where we hope to get back to winning ways.

26th May 2021 – Cheddington – Won  92 – 40 (14-0)

This evening we were looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last weeks results against Waddesdon and the MBL result against Cheddington meant that we went in to the game confident of picking up maximum points. Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman led from the start in their game as they went on to win 18-10. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers, also playing at Cheddington, were 7-6 ahead after 9 ends however they then picked up 14 shots from the last 9 ends to win 21-12. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins played a great game at home, losing just 5 ends during their game. They also picked up a 6 (Hot Shot) on the 16th end and finished 25-6 winners. Ian Ramsay, Roger Crick & Tony Osborne picked up a 4 on the 1st end to start the game well and a 5 on the 5th end meant that they were 11-1 ahead after 5 ends. They continued to control the game and despite a short comeback by Cheddington, we went on to win 28-12

2nd June 2021 -  Hazells v Princes Risborough - Won 74 - 58 (12-2)

This evening we were looking to follow up on last weeks maximum points when we took on Princes Risborough. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers were playing away and despite going 5-1 down after 4 ends they then only lost 4 more ends during the match, winning 24-15. The other triple away saw Ian Ramsay, Keith Harper & Roger Crick take control of the game early on, picking up a 4 on the 4th end to go 6-2 ahead and from there they went on to win 22-9. At home Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins had “one of those days” where nothing seemed to come off for them and they ended up losing 23-12. The final game saw Daniel Watkins, Ashley Dean & Mark Newman play out a close game which they won 16-11 to ensure we won 3 of the rinks and the overall score to earn 12 points and keep us in contention of a quarter final spot.

9th June 2021 - Hazells v Long Crendon - Won 70 - 48 (14-0)

This evening we were back in action against Long Crendon and were looking to better Mondays win against the same opposition in a vital Bucks Cup match. Tonights result was important to ensure that our destiny remained in our own hands in next weeks final group game against Aylesbury Town. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers got off to a good start going 6-2 ahead after 4 ends however by the 12th end the scores were level at 10-10. We then took control of the game, dropping just 1 more shot in the match to win 17-11. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman were involved in a close game, going behind early on but by the 15th end the scores were level at 11-11. We then picked up 4 shots from the next 2 ends and despite dropping 2 on the last held on for a 15-13 win and 4 points from the home games. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins got off to a great start in their game going 7-0 ahead after just 3 ends and despite the home side getting back in to the game and levelling the score at 10-10 after 10 ends we were always confident of controlling the game and we only lost 1 more shot in the game and went on to win 21-11. In the final game Daniel Watkins, Roger Crick & Tony Osborne were 5-2 down after 3 ends however they then picked up 5 shots from the next 2 ends and once they got ahead they never lost the lead again and went on to secure maximum points with a 17-13 win. We now go in to the final game next week 11 points ahead of Aylesbury Town who are in 3rd place, although we won’t be taking qualification for granted and will be looking to finish the group with another good win.

16th June 2021 - 6pm –  Hazells v Aylesbury Town - Won 70 - 55 (12-2)

This evening we went in to our final group game of the Bucks Cup 11 points ahead of 3rd place Aylesbury Town, knowing that a win on 1 rink would be enough to qualify, however we were more determined to pick up as many points as possible. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman were playing at Aylesbury Town and despite a good start to the game by the 9th end they were 9-7 down and from there they got stuck in a bit of a rut and only won 3 more ends in an 18-11 defeat. In the other game away Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers got off to a bad start going 9-0 down after 4 ends however they then started to come to terms with the inconsistent green and by the 9th end the scores were level at 9-9 and they then only lost 1 more end as they went on to secure a 19-12 win and the 2 points to secure the place in the quarter finals. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins played a great game at home and by the 7th end they were already 10-2 ahead and by the 14th end they had doubled their score to go 21-5 ahead. Despite dropping 5 shots over the remaining ends they managed to earn a comfortable 23-10 win. In the final game Daniel Watkins, Roger Crick & Tony Osborne picked up a 4 on the 1st end and then dropped a single shot on each of the next 4 ends to go 4-4 after 5 ands. However they then picked up another 4 shots the next end and from there they never lost the lead, although on the last end they were 4 down until Tony managed to cut it down to 2 and they held of for a 17-15 win. The win has meant that we now qualify for the quarter finals on the 16th July and will be away to group A winners which is probably going to be Bletchley Town

18th July 2021 - Hazells v Bletchley Town - Quarter Finals - Away - Lost 96 - 43

This morning we played the quarter final of the Bucks Cup at Bletchley Town against a very strong side. This was not to be our day today and despite Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman winning 16-11 on their rink unfortunately the other 3 rinks all lost.

MID BUCKS LEAGUE

17th May 2021 - 6pm - Aylesbury Town – Away - Won 87 - 79 (8-2)

This evening we made the short journey to Aylesbury Town in the first match of our defence of the Mid Bucks League. Despite the heavy storm earlier in the day the game managed to go ahead and despite finding the green quite heavy and some very black skies above we were able to get the game completed with mixed success. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins took a few ends to come to terms with the conditions and after 8 ends they were 6-3 down however they then clicked in to gear and only lost 1 more end during the match and went on to earn an important 20-8 win. With a point for each rink won and 5 points for an overall win this was to be an important win. Daniel Watkins, Keith Harper & Paul Rogers started well, going 8-3 ahead after 6 ends and they also controlled their game very well ensuring that, apart from 2 twos, they only dropped single shots on 6 ends. Picking up 5 shots themselves on the 14th end gave them a great lead and they also ran out comfortable winners, 20 – 10. This gave us the 2nd point of the evening and meant we were 22 shots up overall. Andrew MNacKenzie, Pete Coyne & Roger Crick played out a close game, with the scores level at 5-5 after 5 ends we went on to take an 11-6 lead only to drop 9 shots over the next 3 ends. They went in to the last end 21-16 behind and knowing that overall shots could be important they managed to pick up a 4 to finish losing 21-20. Matthew Crick, Eddie Chanell & Tony Osborne picked up 7 shots in the 1st 4 ends, although by the 7th end the scores were level at 7-7. They then only dropped 4 more shots in the match and went on to win 17-11. Ashley Dean, Ian Ramsay & Mark Newman had the toughest evening, picking up just 1 shot in the first 8 ends and conceding 17. Knowing that although their own game was going to be difficult to turn around they knew that overall score was important with 5 points at stake and they kept battling away and ended up losing 29-10 however with the scores from the other rinks putting Hazells 27 shots ahead this 19 shot loss meant we still held on for the overall win and 8 league points. We now move on to Cheddington away on Friday 21st May in match 2 where we need to build on this result win with another good win.

Friday 21st May 2021 – Hazells v Cheddington – Away – Won 151 – 49 (10-0)

Following the win against Aylesbury Town in the Mid Bucks League we went to Cheddington knowing that we needed another win in order to maintain the defence of our title. Having only achieved a draw with them in this competition when we last played them 2 years ago we certainly put Wednesday Bucks Cup disappointment behind us with a maximum points win. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Tony Osborone started well in their game but then dropped a 5 on the 5th end to go 7-5 down however they immediately got 3 of those back the next end and then on the 10th end they picked up a 7 and went on to win 32-14. Matthew Crick, Ashely Dean & Mark Newman played out a closer game and at the half way stage they were level at 9-9 however they then picked up 10 shots from the next 6 ends and went on to win 18-12. Steve Goodchild, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers took control of their game from the start and they only lost 3 ends throughout the match, winning 30-6. George Murdoch, Josh Henly & Steve McNeill found themselves 10-4 down after 10 ends however they then picked up 3 3’s to go 13-10 ahead followed by 8 shots from the last 3 ends to win 21-13. Daniel Watkins, Roger Crick & Andy Watkins couldn’t have asked for a better start picking up 17 shots from the 1st 3 ends and they didn’t lose an end until the 13th end, by which time they were already 42-0 ahead and they went on to win 50-4

7th June 2021 - 6pm - Long Crendon - Home - Won - 106 - 64 (8-2)

This evening we were back in Mid Bucks League action at home to Long Crendon and following our previous 2 wins were looking to continue our winning run. Daniel Watkins, Tony Osborne & Roger Crick controlled their game from the start going 13-2 ahead after 8 ends and they only lost 5 ends during the game which they won 23-7. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers picked up a 5 on the 3rd end to take a 6-1 lead but unfortunately it went downhill from there, winning just 4 more ends and losing 16-11. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins dropped a 3 on the first end but soon got in front after picking up a 6 on the 5th end and from there they controlled the game well and went on to win 34-11. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman looked to be in control of their game when they were 10-3 ahead after 7 ends and by the 13th end they were still 7 shots ahead, 15–8 however they then lost the last 5 ends and ended up losing the game 18-15. Tony Brindley, Ashley Dean & Keith Harper lost the first 3 ends however they then started to get in to the game and by the 7th end were 8-5 ahead. They then picked up 12 shots from the next 5 ends and went on to win 23-12. This result meant a 3rd win and 8 league points and a confidence boost before Wednesdays Bucks Cup game against the same opposition.

23rd July 2021 – 6pm - Princes Risborough – Away - Won - 105 - 61 (8-2)

This evening we got back to Mid Bucks League action, after a few weeks break and this saw us gain another win, however we lost 2 of the rinks by a single shot. Tony Brindley, Keith Harper & Roger Crick played out a close game and just about managed to get the win, 16-14. Matthew Crick, Josh Henly & Andy Watkins had a much easier game and they were 13-0 ahead after just 5 ends and they only lost 5 ends during their 31-6 win. Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers also got off to a great start going 12-0 up after 6 ends and they too only lost 5 ends during the game which they won 28-9. Ashley Dean, Pete Coyne & Mark Newman looked in control of their game, leading 16-10 with 3 ends to go however they dropped 7 shots over those ends to lose 17-16. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Tony Osborne were playing catch up for most of their game although with 2 ends to go they were 14-12 ahead however they dropped 1 on the 17th end and a 2 on the last end to lose 15-14.

27th July 2021 – 6pm - Waddesdon – Away - Won 96 - 70 (8-2)

This evenings game away to Waddesdon was a must win game if we were to have a chance of retaining the title and having let the knockout cup slip away earlier in the season we turned up determined to get a good result. George Murdoch, Keith Harper & Roger Crick played out a tight game over the first 9 ends and were 6-4 ahead and having got to 10-5 up they then dropped a 5. With the game starting to turn they managed to pick up a 4 & 3 from the next 2 ends to get back in a comfortable lead and they went on to win 19-11. Teresa Newman, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers struggled to come to terms with their rink, winning just 1 of the first 10 ends however they then started to find their line, winning 6 of the remaining ends but losing 22-15. Tony Brindley, Daniel Watkins & Mark Newman got off to a great start and were 11-3 ahead after 8 ends however they then lost control of the game and went into the last end level on 16-16 and dropped a single shot to lose 17-16. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Tony Osborne were 9-0 ahead after 4 ends and they never let their opponents get into the game as they went on to win 21-8. Ian Ramsay, Josh Henly & Andy Watkins played some great bowls in their game, picking up 15 shots from 6 ends and from there it was just a case of managing the game, which they did very well, winning 25-12 and giving us the 8-2 win. Tonight’s result means that we go in to next weeks game at home to Aston Clinton knowing that a good win should be enough to retain the trophy

5th  August 2021 - 6pm - Aston Clinton - Home - Won 115 - 41 (10-0)

We went into this evenings final game in the Mid Bucks League tonight full of confidence following last weeks convincing win against Waddesdon and knowing that maximum points would be enough to secure the defence of our league title, despite Waddesdon having games in hand.  Unfortunately for Aston Clinton 1 of their players didn’t turn up for the game and as per the league rules that meant that we were awarded the point and 10 shots from that rink. Matthew Crick, Eddie Chanell & Tony Osborne got off to a good start, going 8-2 ahead however they then dropped a 5 but they then got back in control of the game again and went on to win 44 – 10. Ashley Dean, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers had a closer game in the early stages however they too then got hold of the game and went on to win 24-8. Tony Brindley, Daniel Watkins & Mark Newman also picked up a value point courtesy of their 19-10 win. George Murdoch, Keith Harper & Roger Crick had a much closer game and they went in to the last end level at 13-13. Holding shot with the wood sitting on the jack they just needed to try and protect the head and with Aston Clinton having last wood they needed to move the jack however with both hands blocked out they took out their own closest wood and we picked up a 5 to win 18-13. Congratulations to the team for picking up the maximum points need to retain the league title.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Top Club

Round 1 - Hazells  v Amersham B - Home - Walk Over

Round 2 - Hazells v Gerrards Cross - Away - Lost 5- 0

Having got through to the 3rd round of this years Top Club we were always going to have a tough first game and a trip to Gerrards Cross couldn’t have been much tougher. Matthew Crick played Tom McGuiness in the 2 wood and he struggled to keep up with Tom and lost 18-5. In the singles Daniel Watkins played John McGuiness and he too found this tough going but battled hard and probably deserved a closer scoreline than the 21-8 result he finished up with. Roger Crick & Mark Newman won the first 2 ends in the pairs against Michael Gomme & Andy Briden however they then dropped 5 shots from the next 2 ends and never managed to get on level terms and ended up losing 19-10. The triples, with Ian Ramsay, Andy Watkins & Tony Osborne had the closest game as they were still level at 8-8 after 11 ends however they then went 15-9 down after 15 ends and with 3 points already lost decided to shake hands on the match. Josh Henly, Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers got off to the worst possible start dropping a 7 on the 2nd end and against a team of Gerrards Cross quality this was always going to be difficult to come back from. Having said that they did win 7 of the further 11 ends played and ended up losing 13-8.

2 FOURS

Round 1 - Hazells  v Amersham A - Home - Sunday 6th June  - Won 28 - 19

This morning we played our 1st round match at home to Amersham and Daniel Watkins, Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins took control of their game early on and were 10-3 ahead after 9 ends and by the time they reached the 15th and final end they had won 17-8. Matthew Crick, George Murdoch, Keith Harper & Roger Crick played out a much tougher game and after 6 ends were 8-2 down. Having seen how the other rink were doing we then picked up 5 shots from the next 3 ends to close the gap and when we picked up a 3 on the 14th end to level the score at 11-11 we didn’t need to complete the game as were already 9 ahead from the result on the other rink. We will now face Waddesdon in the next round.

Round 2 - Hazells v Waddesdon - Home - Saturday 19th June - Lost 34 - 16

Following our win against Amersham Town in the last round of the 2 fours we were then drawn against Waddesdon in the next round. This was going to be a tough game against a strong Waddesdon side. Roger Crick, George Murdoch, Keith Harper & Paul Rogers dropped a 3 on the first end and this seemed to give an early indication that we would have to work hard to get anything out of the game. Despite picking up a 3 on the 10th end this was the only time we picked up more than a single shot and we ended up losing 16-8. Daniel Watkins, Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins were 3-3 after 5 ends however the visitors then started to find their line & weight and they picked up 11 shots from the next 5 ends, without reply and we lost 18-8.
