Top Club - Cheddington v Hazells - Sunday 3rd June 2018 10am

This morning the men started this season’s Top Club campaign at Cheddington in confident mood following our recent Bucks Cup & Mid Bucks League wins. Keith Harper took responsibility for the Two Wood and found himself up against Pete Rowling, previous County Two Wood champion. This was a close game throughout however Pete’s experience just saw him over the line to give Cheddington the 1st point. Andy Watkins played Steve Molnar in the singles and Steve got off to a flying start for Cheddington however Andy put in a great fightback, coming from 16-5 down to take a 19-18 lead. With Andy holding shot wood and both players having 1 bowl left it was looking good for Andy however Steve pulled off a great shot to trail the jack and go from 1 down to holding 3 and Andy was unable to cut down the shots with his last wood, losing 21-19. In the pairs Daniel Watkins & Mark Newman played Tony Duke & Tony Currant and it was the home side that again took the early lead going 11-3 ahead however we then fought back well to get the scores level at 11-11 only to drop 9 shots over the next 3 ends giving them an uphill battle to get back in to the match in the remaining ends. They eventually lost 25-16 to give Cheddington the 3 points they need to qualify for the next round. On a positive note Matthew Crick, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick won their triples 22-13 and Andrew MacKenzie, Pete Coyne, Paul Rogers & George Murdoch had a comfortable win in the Fours, however we can now just concentrate on supporting the ladies in their Top Club 2nd round match which will also be played at Cheddington.

Two Fours

Hazells A v Wendover - Sunday 20th May 2018 10am - Lost 38 - 29

This morning our 2nd Two Fours team were in action looking for a better result than our other team who went out to Waddesdon a couple of weeks ago. We hosted Wendover and Matthew Crick, Alan King, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick played out a close game to start before Wendover took a 16-8 lead after 16 ends however we won the last 5 ends to win 18-16 on our rink. In the other game Ian Ramsay, David Logan, Andy Watkins and Mark Newman went behind early on in their game and were never able to get back in to the game losing 22 – 11.

Hazells B v Waddesdon - Thursday 10th May 6pm - Lost 39-37

The first of our National Mens Two Fours teams was in action tonight against Waddesdon and this was to be another close game throughout. Andrew MacKenzie, Eddie Chanell, Paul Rogers & Brian Abigail started well however fell behind and lost on their rink. On the other rink Daniel Watkins, Rob Stanbury, Pete Coyne & George Murdoch led their game and were 7 shots ahead with 2 ends to play however lost the last 2 ends and despite winning on their rink we lost the overall game by a couple of shots.

Bucks Cup

Quarter Final - Hazells v Bletchley Town - 15th July 2018 10am - Away - Lost 80-56

This morning we played a very strong Bletchley Town team in this years quarter final, knowing that we would have to draw on the experience of the Gerrards Cross match at the same stage last year. Unfortunately Andrew MacKenzie, Eddie Chanell & Brian Abigail were in for a very difficult morning as Bletchley built a quick early lead. We never really got in to the game on this rink. Keith Harper, Mark Newman & George Murdoch started well in their game however the hosts then got in to the game and started picking up the vital shots to take a lead that they couldn’t recover from. Matthew Crick, Rob Stanbury & Paul Rogers got off to a great start in their match by picking up a 5 on the first end and they soon got to 9-0 ahead and managed to hold on to their lead throughout the game, winning 18-13. Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick played out a close game in which they took an early lead before dropping 2 3’s to go 7-5 down. They then picked up a 5 and a couple of 1’s to go 12-7 ahead before they then dropped 9 shots in 3 ends to go 16-12 behind. Determined to at least get 2 wins each they fought back well and were a shot ahead going in to the last end which they managed to win to earn a 20-18 win. Despite the disappointment of the result some pride should be taken in reaching the quarter finals again this year.

Hazells v Waddesdon - Wednesday 9th May 2018 6pm - Lost 67 - 55 (2 points)

This evening we started our Bucks Cup campaign off against Waddesdon. Andrew MacKenzie, Keith Harper & Brian Abigail were 6 shots down after the 1st 3 ends and by the 11th end they were 9-6 behind however they fought back well and went on to win 6 of the last 7 ends to win 17-11. The other game at home saw Ian Ramsay, Gerry Moores & George Murdoch win just 7 ends during their 16-9 defeat. Playing at Waddesdon Alan King, Eddie Chanell & Paul Rogers narrowly lost 12-11 whilst Rob Stanbury, Pete Coyne & Mark Newman lost 28-18. The final result saw us pick up just 2 points.

Hazells v Princes Risborough - Wednesday 16th May 2018 6pm - Won 78 - 57 (12 points)

This evening we looked to bounce back from the dissappointment of last weeks defeat to Waddesdon and Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers didn;t get off to the best of starts, dropping a 6 on the first end and by the 6th end they were 11-5 down. However from there they then won the next 10 ends on the way to a 28-13 win.  Rob Stanbury, Eddie Chanell & Steve McNeill were involved in a close game however dropping a 4 on 2 ends left them playing catch up and despite some great bowls they lost 17-11. At Princes Risborough Andrew MacKenzie, Keith Harper & Brian Abigail were looking to continue where they left off last week when they were the only winning rink. Although the scores were level at 5-5 we then took control of the game and went in to the last end 20-10 ahead however we then dropped a 7 to make the score closer than it should have been. In the final game Ian Ramsay, Mark Newman & George Murdoch came from behind to win their game 19-10, giving us the overall win and gets our Buck Cup campaign underway.

Hazells v Wendover - Wednesday 23rd May 2018 6pm - Won 82 - 62 (12 points)

Following last week’s win against Princes Risborough we were looking to continue that winning run against Wendover tonight. With a very similar team to the previous week Andrew MacKenzie, Keith Harper & Brian Abigail kept up their 100% record this season with a 19-13 win. Ian Ramsay, Mark Newman & George Murdoch had a convincing 28-15 win to secure all the points from the home games. Away from home the points were shared with Rob Stanbury, Andy Watkins & Paul Rogers earning a 16-11 win however Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick slipped to a 23-19 defeat. With 3 winning rinks and overall score this was another valuable 12 points. We now have a week off Bucks Cup matches with Long Crendon next to play in 2 weeks time.

Hazells v Long Crendon - Wednesday 6th June 2018 6pm - Won 68 - 45 (12 pts)

Following our Mid Bucks League win last week against Long Crendon last week we went in to this “Must Win” Bucks Cup match confident that we could get the points that should put our qualification for the knockout stages in our own hands. In the home games Andrew, Keith & Brian were still proud holders of a 100% record in Bucks Cup & Mid Bucks League games and they got off to a great start winning the 1st 5 ends on their way to another comfortable win, 20-6. Pete, Steve & Roger also got off to a great start and managed to go 1 end more before conceding a shot taking a 12-0 lead after 6 ends. This game never looked in doubt and we only lost 4 ends in a 27-10 win to secure both the home games. Rob, Andy & Paul were involved in a close game at Long Crendon and managed to edge it 12-9. In the final game Ian, Mark & George lost 20-9 however we still managed to pick up 12 of the 14 points available. Next week we play Aylesbury Town in the last of the group games.

Hazells v Aylesbury Town - Wednesday 13th June 2018 6pm - Lost 80 - 59 (2 pts)

We went in to tonight’s match 6 points ahead of Wendover, who were playing Waddesdon, knowing that a win would guarantee 2nd place and a place in the quarter finals. With their 100% record still intact Andrew, Keith & Brian went in to their last game looking to continue their impressive run of form and they started their game well going 7-1 ahead after 4 ends and they were still ahead after 9 ends however they then lost the next 7 ends, dropping 18 shots in the process and they finished up losing 26-10. Pete, Steve & Roger controlled their game throughout, only losing 5 ends on their way to a 25-8 win. Rob, David & Paul struggled throughout their game, winning just 4 ends in a 24-7 defeat. Ian, Mark & George picked up a 6 early in their game to take and hold the lead for most of their game however disappointing finish saw them drop 11 shots in the last 4 ends to lose 22-17. This defeat meant that we were relying on Waddesdon to beat Wendover and thankfully news soon came through that Waddesdon had won 12-2, ensuring our qualification for the quarter finals where we will be playing away to Stony Stratford or Bletchley Town.

Mid Bucks League

Aylesbury Town v Hazells - Monday 14th May 2018 6pm - Won 95 - 68 (8 points)

This evening we opened our Mid Bucks League campaign with a victory over local rivals Aylesbury Town. Although the result could have been better had it not been for 2 of our rinks dropping 2 shots on the last end. Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick were involved in a close game although were never able to get more than a shot ahead and they were 15-14 up with 2 ends to go and then dropped a 1 & 2 to lose 17-15. Andrew MacKenzie, Keith Harper & Mark Newman dropped 5 shots in the first 2 ends however they then picked up 5 shots the next end and from there they went on to win 12 ends on their way to a 25-13 win, playing some excellent bowls in the process. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & George Murdoch also lost the first couple of ends however they then started to get in to the game and by the 13th end had managed to take the lead, which they then didn’t give up, winning 18-12. Denzil Ashcroft, Rob Stanbury & Paul Rogers were 8-7 down after 7 ends however they then got back in to the game, drawing on Paul & Denzil’s experience on the green to turn the tables and go 14-9 ahead after 14 ends. Unfortunately the home side then when the last 4 ends to win 15-14. Gerry Moores, David Logan & Brian Abigail found themselves 7-4 behind after 9 ends however hey then picked up 10 shots over the next 3 ends and despite dropping a 3 the next end they went on to win 23-11

Hazells v Long Crendon - Wednesday 30th May 2018 6pm - Won 85 - 78 (9 points)

Following our win in the first game we welcomed Long Crendon this evening in the knowledge that our recent poor record against Crendon needed to be put to one side if we were to keep up with Waddesdon who have also won their first 2 games in the competition. With Long Crendon short of available men they put in 3 of their ladies to ensure the match could be fulfilled. Andrew MacKenzie, Keith Harper & Brian Abigail went in to this game on the back of a 100% record in this and the Bucks Cup. Despite going 5 – 2 down after 5 ends they then got in to the game and went ahead 3 ends later and held on for a 16-14 win. Rob Stanbury, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers were involved in a close game and they went in to the last end 14-14 however we managed to get the important shot to take a 15-14 win. Daniel Watkins, Ashley Dean & Mark Newman started slowly however we then picked up 10 shots in 4 ends to take the lead and from there they went on to win 20-11.  Ian Ramsay, Sid Brotherston & Andy Watkins had a tough evening and couldn’t come to terms with the heavier green and were our only losing rink, going down 23-13. On the final rink Gerry Moores, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick picked up 5 shots in the 1st 2 ends and by the 7th end they were 15-3 ahead and despite a late comeback we held on for a 21-16 win.

Cheddington v Hazells - Friday 6th July 2018 6pm - Won 107 - 64 (9 points)

Having won our 1st 2 games in this seasons MBL we were looking to consolidate our position in the league and set up a possible title decider at Waddesdon at the end of the season. Rob Stanbury, David Logan & Andy Watkins got us off to a great start with a 21-14 win. Daniel Watkins, Ashley Dean & Mark Newman had a tougher night of it winning just 5 ends during their 26-10 defeat. Gerry Moores, Keith Harper & Eddie Chanell lost just 5 ends during their 30-8 win. Ian Ramsay, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers also managed to earn a comfortable 17-9 win. In the final match Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick picked up 2 shots on each of the 1st 4 ends and despite dropping a couple of shots they continued to control the game and went on to win 29-7.

Hazells v Aston Clinton - Monday 16th July 2018 6pm - Won 101 - 73 (10 pts)

Following the mixed emotions of the previous days Bucks Cup exit we were back in Mid Bucks League action this evening at home to Aston Clinton. We started slowly on all rinks this evening and after 7 ends we were wondering what was happening as we were losing on all rinks and were 23 shots down. However this seemed to be the wake up call we needed and Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick then picked up 9 shots over the next 4 ends to go 15-8 ahead and from there they went on to win 26-10. Sid Brotherston, Pete Coyne & David Logan came from 10-3 down to level at 10-10 and then by the 15th end it was 16-16 and we went in to the last end 18-17 down however we were able to pick up the 2 shots to win the game 19-18. Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Mark Newman came back from 7-2 down to win 14-12. Ian Ramsay, Matthew Crick & Paul Rogers dropped 11 shots in the 1st 4 ends however they then picked up a 4 and slowly started to reduce the deficit and by the 15th end we were just 17-15 down. We then picked up 10 shots in the last 3 ends to win 25-17. Andrew MacKenzie, Denzil Ashcroft & Eddie Chanell were involved in a close game throughout and with 2 ends to go we were 14-12 ahead however we then dropped a 4 and were looking to be our only losing rink however we picked up a 3 to snatch the win and a full house with a 17-16 win.  With 4 wins from 4 we now move on to Princes Risborough on Friday 20th July before a last game away at Waddesdon on the 27th

Princes Risborough v Hazells - Friday 20th July 2018 6pm - Won 94-57 (9pts)

This evening we went to Princes Risborough for the penultimate game in this seasons competition and with 4 wins under our belt we were looking to extend that run and give ourselves a chance at winning the league. Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick were slow to get started and they soon found themselves 7-1 behind however they then picked up 5 shots from the next 2 ends. It took them until the 13th end to take the lead and once they had got in front they managed to stay there, winning 17-13. Ian Ramsay, Matthew Crick & Paul Rogers got off to a great start going 15-1 ahead after 7 ends. They only lost 6 ends in their game and earnt a great 23-7 win, which would take the pressure of the other rinks who were facing closer games.  Rob Stanbury, Ashley Dean & Mark Newman were involved in a close game for the first half however they then started to find their line and went from 6-5 ahead to win 17-10. Sid Brotherston, Pete Coyne & David Logan started well and were 9-4 up after 7 ends however their hosts then found their way and won the next 5 ends to take an 11-9 lead however we then won the last 7 ends to win 23-11.  Andrew MacKenzie, Denzil Ashcroft & Eddie Chanell played out a close match which saw the lead swap hands on several occasions and despite being 14-12 ahead with 3 ends left to play they unfortunately lost 16-14.

Waddesdon v Hazells - Friday 27th July 2018 6pm - Lost 83 - 66 (1 1/2 pts)

This evening we went in to our last MBL game of the season on the back of 5 straight wins knowing that a 6th win would guarantee us the title. Waddesdon had only played 3 games before tonight and they had also won all 3 so it was important to get as many points as possible tonight. Unfortunately despite keeping the game close in the early stages Waddesdon started to control the game and we only managed to win on 1 rink through Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper and Mark Newman, 19-13. Daniel Watkins, Denzil Ashcroft & Eddie Chanell managed to earn a 14-14 draw in their game however the other 3 rinks all lost meaning that we lost 8½  to 1½. We are now reliant on Waddesdon dropping points against either Aston Clinton or Long Crendon if we are to win the league this season.

Mid Bucks Knockout Cup

1st Round - Hazells v Aston Clinton - Given Walkover

2nd Round - Princes Risborough v Hazells - 31st July 2018 - Won 3-1

Following our bye through to round 2 of this years competition we travelled to Princes Risborough looking to get our defence of the title off to a good start. Alan King resumed his role in the singles event and he had to play Ray Rouse. After a close start to the game Alan went on to win 7 ends in a row to take a 13-2 lead and despite then dropping 6 shots over the next 3 ends he went on to win our 1st point with a 21-11 win. In the Pairs Daniel Watkins & Roger Crick got off to a great start winning the 1st 8 ends to take a 14 – 0 lead. We continued to control this game and despite dropping a 5 we only lost 5 ends in the match, winning 25-11. Pete Coyne, Ashley Dean, Paul Rogers & George Murdoch also took control of their game early on, going 10 - 4 ahead after 8 ends. Despite dropping the occasional shot they went on to get our 3 win and the game 20-13. The Triples of Matthew Crick, Andy Watkins & Mark Newman saw our boys come back from 14-3 down to get the final end with the scores level at 19-19. With just 1 wood to come and holding the shot that would give us the 4 wins Dennis Robertson managed to find a gap in the head to take out our shot wood, meaning that we would have to settle for the 3-1 win. More importantly though this has meant a place in the semi-final which will give us a home draw against either Stony Stratford or Chesham.

3rd Round - Hazells V Stony Stratford - 9th September 2018 - Lost 2-2

This mornings semi final at home to Stony Stratford was going to be a tough match as the extension of the play by date for Stony had allowed them to put out a full strength side, including several Middleton Cup players. In the singles Alan King put up a great fight however he finished on the wrong side of the 21-14 scoreline. In the pairs Daniel Watkins & Roger Crick were playing Paul Clark & Paul Levitt and we took the early lead, going 9-4 ahead after 10 ends however by the 15th end we were just 1 shot ahead, 11-10. With the singles defeat we knew that we needed to get a point on the board and managed to pick up 8 shots from 4 of the remaining 6 ends and we went on to win 19-12 to bring the match score back to 1-1 and the shots score was also level. Pete Coyne, Ashley Dean, Paul Rogers & George Murdoch had a tough game and by the 13th end they were 15-8 down however they then managed to get back in to the game and were just 1 shot behind when they dropped a 5 & 3 over the next 2 ends, leaving them needing 9 shots from the last 3 ends to get the 2nd point on the board. Unfortunately the game finished in a 25-15 defeat for Hazells. With the Four’s defeat meaning that the triples needed to win by more than 10 shots if we were to progress to the final once again this year. Matthew Crick, Andy Watkins & Mark Newman put up a great fight and despite winning the game they were unable to win by the required margin as they only won by 5 shots meaning despite a 2-2 scoreline we lost on shots and so went our grip on the trophy we won last year.
