2019 MENS FIXTURES

BUCKS CUP

8th May 2019 - 6pm - Waddesdon - Lost 63-53 (13-1)

Following the win against Waddesdon in the 2 Fours at the weekend we went in to tonight’s game confident that we could build on that success however unfortunately it was not to be our night. Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell & Andy Watkins had a tough night at home against a very strong team and despite winning 9 ends each they never managed to pick up more than a single shot from any of them and lost 16-9 on their rink. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Roger Crick struggled throughout their game and were never able to get in front although they too won 9 ends each and going in to the last end they were 4 down but holding 5 shots with just 2 woods to come and unfortunately we were only able to pick up 2 shots, losing 14-12. In the away games Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Paul Rogers got off to a great start going 6-0 up after 3 ends and they remained in the lead until they dropped 8 shots in 2 ends and went in to the last end 16-16 and unfortunately dropped a shot on the last to lose 17-16. Our only point of the game came from Sid Brotherston, Rob Stanbury & Mark Newman who played out a tight game throughout and were 6-6 after 10 ends and then dropped 9 shots over the next 4 ends however they then picked up 10 shots themselves from the next 3 ends, only to drop a shot on the last end to finish 16-16.

15th May 2019 - 6pm - Hazells v Cheddington – Won 12 – 2 (95-55)

Following our defeat last week to Waddesdon it was important to bounce back tonight and ensure we got back to winning ways against Cheddington. Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick won 8 of the first 9 ends to take a 17-2 lead and although they dropped 2 4’s later in the game they managed to earn a 27-12 win. Daniel Watkins, Eddie Chanell & Andy Watkins got off to a disappointing start dropping a 5 on the first end followed by another 3 shots on the next 2 ends, We then picked up 14 shots from the next 4 ends to take the lead however we then dropped 13 shots over the next 6 ends and despite getting back to 21-18 down we lost 24-20. At home Ron Stanbury, Keith Harper & Mark Newman’s game was level at 5-5 after 5 ends however we won the next 5 ends to go 15-5 ahead and from there the win was never in doubt as we went on to win 22-12. On the other rink Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Paul Rogers also had a comfortable win, losing just 5 ends during their 26-6 win

Wednesday 29th May –  Hazells v Wendover – Bucks Cup – Won 12 – 2 (75-65)

This evening we picked up another valuable win at bottom of the table Wendover, although unfortunately we did lose on 1 rink. At Wendover Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Paul Rogers started slowly and were 11-4 down after 9 ends however we then picked up 12 shots from the next 4 ends to take the lead and held on for a 17-15 win. Also playing away were Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Mark Newman who picked up a 5 on the first end however by the 9th end they were 11-9 down. We then picked up 7 shots from the next 2 ends to regain the lead and this time we didn’t let it go, winning 20-18. At home Daniel Watkins, Ashley Dean & Andy Watkins had a comfortable win, having picked up a 6 on the 2nd end, they continued to dominate the game and won 26-10. In the final game Pete Coyne, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick started well however they then dropped 9 shots in 2 ends and from there were always trying to play catch up and ended up losing 22-12

Wednesday 5th June –  Hazells v Long Crendon – Bucks Cup – Won 12 – 2 (65 – 61)

This evening we were looking to replicate our win on Monday against Long Crendon knowing that a win would keep us on track to qualify for the quarter final of the Bucks Cup. Ian Ramsay, David Logan & Paul Rogers were away tonight and got off to a bad start going 13 – 0 down after 6 ends and although they were able to win 4 of the next 5 ends the luck still didn’t go their way and they ended up losing 27 – 5. On the other rink away Pete Coyne, Ashley Dean & Roger Crick were involved in a close game and they were losing 6-4 after 8 ends however we then won 8 of the last 10 ends to win 18-10. At home Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins were 8-2 down after 4 ends however they then picked up a 5 to get back in to the game and from there they pushed on to win 25-12. Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Mark Newman were also behind after 5 ends however they then picked up 14 shots from the next 6 ends to go 15-4 ahead. They then lost the next 6 ends and the match was looking close overall however we managed to pick up 2 on the last end to win 17-12.

Wednesday 12th June –  Hazells v Aylesbury Town – Bucks Cup – Won 14 – 0 (97 – 54)

This evening we went in to our last group match knowing that we just needed to win on 1 rink to guarantee runners up spot and a place in the quarter finals. For the 2 teams playing at home they started off the game hoping that the away team were doing the business as Ian, Eddie & Paul were 8-0 down after 3 ends and Pete, David & Roger were 12 – 4 down after 7 ends. However both teams managed to get back in to the game with some high scores, with Paul’s triple picking up a 7 to take a lead that they then kept hold of as they went on to win 26-12, winning the last 7 ends. Roger’s triple only won 3 of the first 11 ends, however they managed to pick up 13 shots in the process and despite then dropping a 5 they won 5 of the last 7 ends and ended up winning 26-20. At Aylesbury Town Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Mark Newman got off to a great start going 11-2 ahead after 5 ends and from there they only lost 6 ends in the game and ended up winning 26-8, which included picking up 6 shots on the 9th end. Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins picked up a 7 on the 2nd end in their game however they only managed to win 3 of the first 11 ends but the 7 meant that at this stage they were only 12-9 down and they finished the stronger, winning 6 of the last 7 ends to win 19-14 and secure maximum points in the last of the group games.

Sunday 14th July 2019 – Hazells v Marlow – Bucks Cup Quarter Final – Away – Lost 66 - 63

Going in to this game we were confident of getting a good result based on our previous visit to Marlow in the Top Club and our recent form. Keith Harper, David Logan & Mark Newman played out a close game, although they led the game from early in the game and they held on to win 15-11. Rob Stanbur, Ashley Dean & Roger Crick picked up 9 shots from 5 ends early in the game to take a11-3 lead after 8 ends however the hosts then started to get back in to the game and we went in to the last end leading by 1 shot and thankfully picked up a further shot to win 15-13. Ian Ramsay, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers dropped a 4 on the 1st end and from there they struggled to keep in the game against a tough opposition and they only managed to win 7 ends, losing 20-10. Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill & Andy Watkins got off to a bad start dropping a 6 o the first end however 3 ends later they were 8-6 ahead. The game continued to see the lead swap around throughout however we managed to hold on for a 23-22 win. So despite winning on 3 of the 4 rinks we narrowly lost out on a semi final place by just 3 shots.

MID BUCKS LEAGUE

13th May 2019 - 6pm - Aylesbury Town - Home - Won - 9 - 1 (97 - 71)

This evening we started our Mid Bucks League campaign with a home tie agains Aylesbury Town. Josh Henley, Steve McNeill & Roger Crick had a tough evening, only winning 4 of the 1st 15 ends although they were holding 5 on 2 ends only for the opposition skip to pick up the shot with each of his last woods on those ends. We managed to make the score more respectable by picking up 8 shots over the last 3 ends although they lost 18-16. Gerry Moores, Eddie Chanell & Paul Rogers picked up a 5 on the first end and from there they controlled the game, winning 20-10. Denzil Ashcroft, Keith Harper & Mark Newman raced to a 13-3 lead and although the visitors started to fightback we held on for a 16-14 win. Rob Stanbury, Pete Coyne & Andy Watkins dropped a 3on the first end however by the 6th end they were 10-5 ahead and they then won 4 ends in a row, picking up 10 shots in the process and finished winning 21-17. Ian Ramsay, Ashley Dean & George Murdoch completed the win courtesy of their comfortable 24-12 win.

22nd May 2019 - 6pm - Hazells v Cheddington – Lost 5 ½ to 4 ½ (Score level at 83 -83)

Following Sunday’s disappointment at Cheddington in the Top Club we were looking to bounce back at home to Cheddington in the Mid Bucks League however this was to be another disappointing evening as we drew the game but only won 2 of the 5 rinks and so lost on points. Ashley Dean, Pete Coyne & Steve McNeill got off to a slow start going 7-2 down after 5 ends however they then picked up 11 shots from the next 4 ends and despite losing the next 5 ends they managed to hold on for a 19-16 win. Josh Henley, Keith Harper & Andy Watkins had a similarly slow start and despite dropping a 5 on the 4th end they picked up a 5 themselves the next end and then went on to win 23-17. Rob Stanbury, Eddie Chanell & George Murdoch started well in their game however they dropped a 5 on the 16th end and lost 18-14. Sid Brotherston, Ian Ramsay & David Logan had a tough evening and were behind throughout the game and lost 15-11. Gerry Moores, Denzil Ashcroft & Paul Rogers struggled in their game however they picked up a 6 on the 10th end to take a 9-8 lead and by the 17th end we were 16-14 ahead however we then dropped a 3 to lose on the rink and just earn a draw in the match.

3rd June 2019 - 6pm - Long Crendon - Away - Won 85 - 84 (7½ - 2½)

This evening we travelled to Long Crendon for the 1st of 2 games in 3 days and we were looking to bounce back from the disappointing loss to Cheddington in our previous MBL game. We arrived at the green to be met with black tyre marks all over the green and this was to be a sign of the evening ahead. Having had fertilizer put down on the green that day it hadn’t been watered in and meant that the bowls became very sticky and uncomfortable. Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Mark Newman got off to a great start and were 13-6 ahead when they dropped a 5 to bring the scores closer than the game would have suggested. From here it was a close game and ended up 16-16. Daniel Watkins, Pete Coyne & Roger Crick found the conditions tricky in the early stages of their game and soon found themselves 17-4 down however as soon as they managed to get control of the mat they then started to get back in to the game and won 6 of the last 7 ends to narrowly lose 18-15. Finding the conditions equally as tough were Rob Stanbury, Josh Henly & Andy Watkins who dropped 5 shots in the first 2 ends, followed by 2 5’s half way through the game and so they then had to start playing damage limitation and they too finished the game stronger winning 6 of the last 8 ends, although they lost 25-13. So with just ½ a point from the 1st 3 games it was important for the other 2 matches to win well and Alan King, Keith Harper & David Logan got off to a flying start going 19-2 ahead after 9 ends and they went on to win 22-13, meaning that Gerry Moores, Steve McNeill & paul Rogers would need to win by 7 to get the overall win.  They started well picking up a 3 on the 1st end and although they lost the next 4 ends they only dropped a single shot on each end and then picked up 9 shots themselves from the next 4 ends. They went in to the last end 8 shots ahead, knowing that 2nd wood would be enough to cling on for the win and that is how it turned out as they won 19-12. A hard fought win to give some confidence before Wednesday’s Bucks Cup against Long Crendon.

14th June 2019 - 6pm - Aston Clinton - Away - Won 123 - 45 (10-0)

Thankfully the rain has finally stopped, at least for now, and we were back in action in the Mid Bucks League. We arrived at Aston Clinton with concern over the condition of the green following the rain and although it was heavy going everyone adapted well and we managed to get maximum points to maintain in the running for the league this year. Tony Brindley, Denzil Ashcroft & Roger Crick only lost 3 of the 1st 13 ends and were 21-3 ahead before losing the last 5 ends to finish 21-8 winners. Josh Henly, Eddie Chanell & David Logan also got off to a great start and were 15-3 ahead after 10 ends and they continued to dominate the game, winning 20-9. Performance & result of the season so far came from Gerry Moores, Ashley Dean & Mark Newman who came off the green, after a fantastic performance, disappointed to have dropped 7 shots in their game despite picking up 42 shots themselves. They scored almost as many shots as the entire Aston Clinton team over the 5 rinks !!!. Matthew Crick, Pete Coyne & Steve McNeill kept the game tight to start with and were just 7-5 ahead after 9 ends however having seen the scores on the other rinks stepped up a gear and went on to win 21-9. Rob Stanbury, Ian Ramsay & Paul Rogers were actually 6-3 behind after 7 ends however they then were getting used to the conditions and when they picked up a 6 to go in the lead they never looked back and won 19-12

Friday 19th July 2019 – Hazells v Princes Risborough – Mid Bucks League – Home – Won 10 – 0 (116 – 55)

This evening we were back in MBL action, after a break for the EBA competitions. Princes Risborough were the visitors this evening and despite some rain earlier in the day the green bowled well and our team took advantage. Daniel Watkins, Steve McNeill and Roger Crick went 14-0 ahead after just 4 ends and despite dropping a 3 on the next end they then restricted their opponents to winning just 6 more ends, with a single shot on each, going on to win 29-9. Gerry Moores, Pete Coyne & Paul Rogers got off to a bad start losing the 1st 5 ends however they then lost just 4 more ends in the game and went on to win 18-10. Andrew MacKenzie, Rob Stanbury & Mark Newman were involved in a close match until they picked up a 6 on the 9th end to go 11-6 ahead and from there they went on to win 22-11. Alan King, Ian Ramsay & Andy Watkins were 10-1 ahead after 6 ends and they restricted their opponents to just 6 ends in the game and went on to win 25-10. Tony Brindley, Josh Henly & David Logan completed the full house with another comfortable win, 22-15, to give us a very welcome 10 points win.

Tuesday 23rd July 2019 – Hazells v Waddesdon – Mid Bucks League – Won 9 – 1 (101 – 78)

Following our win on Friday against Princes Risborough we went in to tonight’s game against Waddesdon knowing that an 8-2 win would be enough to secure our 1st MBL win. However in recent season’s this has always been the game to finish our hopes of league success however considering the season we are currently enjoying there was a positive feeling around the team before this game. Daniel Watkins, Pete Coyne & Roger Crick went 5-0 ahead after 3 ends however they only won 1 of the next 7 ends and were then 7-7 down. This gave them just the push they needed and they went on to win 7 of the last 8 ends to win 17-10. Josh Henly, Steve McNeill & Paul Rogers got off to a great start and they picked up a 6 on the 7th end to go 12 – 2 ahead. 2 ends later they picked up another 5 and were 19-4 ahead before they dropped a 5 to give the visitors a glimmer of light that they could get something out of the game. This game went right down to the wire as we dropped 12 shots over the last 5 ends and just about held on for a 22-21 win. Despite dropping 1 shot on the 1st end Ian Ramsay, Eddie Chanell & Ashley Dean then picked up 13 shots themselves over the next 6 ends and despite dropping a 5 and a 4 before the end of the game we held on for a 22-14 win. Sid Brotherston, David Logan & Mark Newman dropped 4 shots from the 1st 2 ends however they won the next 4 to go 8-4 ahead. We then struggled to keep in the game and went on to lose 24-15. Despite dropping a 3 on the last end Rob Stanbury, Keith Harper & Andy Watkins only lost 6 other ends, all of which were single shots. Having picked up 8 shots from the first 3 end this was always going to be a game that called for great game management and keeping an eye on the overall score. They managed to control the game with some fantastic bowls and won 25-9. So this results gave us the 9-1 win to guarantee the league title belonged to us, even though all the other teams still have games to play. A great team result that we will fully celebrate later in the season.
